I know this must be a common problem because I hear it all the time, but I still can't change it in my game. I've been playing for about a year, this year have only gone to a handful of courses, haven't been to the range yet.

My first time asking for golf tips on a forum, not sure if it'll help but thought I'd give it a try.

Hey Ems, I'm a beginner golfer myself so I'm in no position to give you instruction. But in all the golf books and instruction guides I've come across, it says a slice is caused by an open clubface at impact. They say you must change the clubface angle in order to change the direction of your hit. The key is to find out where the clubface is opening, in the backswing or the forward swing. The next time you're playing, just have a more experienced golfer check out your swing. Also, have him/her check your grip. A weak grip is when the hands are turned counterclockwise or too much to the left (for a right handed golfer). I'm not sure how much this will help but I am sure going to try it out.

hi ems...i just wanted to add a little bit to what QOTB said.

first off, i think lessons from a professional are very important. you can read and be told a lot of conflicting things but a good instructor will be able to see the most offensive flaws causing the slice.

slices are produced by an open face at contact as QOTB said. but the swing path is another factor that leads to a slice. you have to figure out which of the following is causing YOUR slice. i am assuming your are a rightie; if not just reverse the directions.

      1) OUTSIDE-IN swing path
-leads to the ball starting out left and then slicing to the right

      2) STRAIGHT swing path
-leads to the ball starting out straight and slicing to the right

      3) INSIDE-OUT swing path
-leads to the ball starting out right and slicing even more to the right

it's not really a cure but maybe someone can help you once you discover the underlying cause.

for playing purposes as well, if you don't have time to find an instructor but just want to play, your driver and woods create more sidespin off the ball than your irons...so if you're confident with the distance from your irons, you can use them off the tee and you will slice the ball less.....
