No offence to the idea of the poll :), but we all know it's going to be pretty much split down the middle in terms of who's going to win.

Equally, both sides have strong players that bring depth in one form or another, but what it's all going to boil down to at the end of the day is who's on and who's off their game(s).

But I vote for Team East! :D

I would have to agree that in match play, anything can......and will happen. Hell, I dont know alot of people here at all.....good event to change that for sure!

All in all, its going to be a great day, hopefully with some great golf.

Oh......do I need to tell you who I voted for?!:p

So are we going standard 2-man best ball format or what? I was a late addition and really don't want to search through a zillion pages to find out. :help:

Format
We'll play 2 v 2 in each foursome. There are 5 points up for grabs in each match. If anybody watched the Tavistock cup (Isleworth vs some other posh Florida gate community), you'll understand. Here's how the points are broken down.

Better Ball - Player W1/Player W2 vs Player E1/PlayerE2
Singles - Player W1 vs Player E1
Singles - Player W1 vs Player E2
Singles - Player W2 vs Player E1
Singles - Player W2 vs Player E2

In total, if we have 16 players participating, there will be 20 points up for grabs. or if we have 10 players participating for each side, then 25 pointes.

This is not actual match play then?

Basically, play and score well. Then hope your score beats the other 2 opponents' scores.

In Match Play, you can concede holes/putts. Big blowup holes are forgotten quickly as you're playing for a score but for each hole instead.

I've heard racmbs mention "match play" several times. The above format doesn't seem to be match play to me....unless we're playing several rounds (which I know we're not).

Ahhh, but it is Match Play.....you are playing a Team match play......and TWO individual Match Plays.....all at the same time! Hilarious huh?:p

Pretty much.....play your game and let everything look after itself.

I see now... sounds cool to me!

Sooo it looks like each person is individually responsible for 2 points of the match... plus the team best ball point.

So on each hole, I have to beat both Scotty and Swainner AND we have to beat them combined?

Thats if you win all five points accumulated......all you have to do is win more holes than Racmbs.....and Swaain.....and that goes for you partner too.....and you got yourself 5 golden points.

Piece of cake man...its in the bag!!:D

Not combined. The partner best ball thing is, take the lowest score of you and your partner and use that against the best score of your opposing team, for that hole.

Sounds like we still need some clarification.
Here is the tavistock cup format - not that I like it any better, but it sounds different than what we've got going: And for the record - I think the pairs match should be best combined score wins the hole..

• What playing format does the Tavistock Cup use? | back to top (http://www.tavistockcup.com/tournament_faq.html#top)
Round 1
Round 1 will be a Fourball Medal Matchplay. Within the fourball, the two-person team with the lowest 18-hole better-ball total will win the match. Each win is worth 2 points, a tie is worth 1 point and a loss is worth 0 points. In total there will be 10 points available for Round 1.
Round 2
Round 2 will be a Fourball Singles Medal Matchplay. Each player in the group plays an 18-hole strokeplay singles match against each of the opposing players; therefore, each player plays two singles matches. A win is worth 1 point, a tie is worth 1/2 point, and a loss is worth 0 points. In total there will be 20 points for Round 2.
As a result it will take 15 1/2 points to win the Tavistock Cup and be crowned World Golf & Country Club Champion.

My understanding of this is

E1 shoots 7 on the hole while E2 shoots a 3. East would count 3 as the score on that hole for the 18 holes (not 10 as your "combined" implies).

 We'll just have to see about that.

*edit: and sorry guys, using the word "combined" wasn't a good idea, I know what a best ball match is all about. ;)

Sorry but I'm still confused:confused:  . If it's medal match play do we have a 1up 2up... scenario within the match, or do we just take the lowest score as our team score for each hole.

The winner of the match being the team with the lowest total after 18 holes.

Thanks to all the organizers of this event, its going to be a blast !!

I was hoping for the same as you but it seems that's not the case. You cannot do the 1up 2up thing when you are playing 2 different opponents at the same time. It looks like it's simply based on your score after the 18 holes.

I can't wait though, first competitive golf outside of my regular money games with friends.

Actually..........it IS a 1-up, 2-up scenary WITHIN the matches.

W1 vs E1........after 4 holes W1 is 2 up
W1 vs E2........after 4 holes E2 is 2 up

if the match ended right here.....W1 would win one point because he beat E1, AND E2 would win one point because he beat W1.

So, to clarify......there are a total of 5 matches going on WITHIN ONE GROUP.

Better Ball - Player W1/Player W2 vs Player E1/PlayerE2
Singles - Player W1 vs Player E1
Singles - Player W1 vs Player E2
Singles - Player W2 vs Player E1
Singles - Player W2 vs Player E2

Guttersnipe.........we have both medal match play within the group AND the lowest score per team per hole.

IE:

First hole is a Par 4

W1 scores 4
W2 scores 3
E1 scores 4
E2 scores 5

For this hole, TEAM WEST is 1-up because they take a 3 for the lowest score from the team

W1 is all square with E1

W1 is 1-up on E2

W2 is 1-up on E1

W2 is 1-up on E2

I hope this explains things a bit better and doesnt confuse the issue.
