He was not able to qualify. Should the officials at the Masters give him a special exemption?
I heard Shingo Katayama was given one of the special exemptions.

Based on his Ryder Cup performance alone, I think he should be given an exemption.

Why did Shingo get an exemption? As much as I like Monty and I do feel bad that he's not playing in the Masters and that he gets such a bad rap from Americans, I don't think he should be exempted. He didn't make the top 50 despite playing some really good golf lately to try to make it. Augusta has its rules and should stand by it. We can't feel sorry for someone and let them play! Sorry Monty, would have loved to see you win a Masters.

I don't think someone should be given special exemptions because of their Ryder Cup performance. The Ryder Cup is a tournament on its own and yes, features the best players in the world but you can't use his record in team format play to say whether or not he should play in the Masters.

What criteria should be used then? Head to head Monty absolutely dominated some of the best talent in the world and is still a world class player. The Ryder Cup is an event on par with the Majors in terms of playing field. It just has a different format. I think all Ryder Cuppers should receive an automatic invite to all majors.

I think he should get an exemption...that's what exemptions are for!

Monty should be given an invitation. Despite the fact he can be a miserable SOB, he's won the Order of Merit seven times, and his Ryder Cup record is outstanding. The poor guy went to China and the Desert for cryin' out loud just to try and qualify. He's good for golf, and good for the Masters. I believe that Hootie will extend an invite. Monty can easily top-ten that course.
'Course Tiger's gonna win, so the result is a given anyway...

I totally agree that Monty has tried hard to earn his spot by playing all over the place every weekend to get into that top 50. I also do not take away any of his previous awards or his record at the Ryder Cup. Like I said in my first post, I like Monty and would love to see him at the Masters but the question of whether or not he should be exempt, I would say NO cause where do you stop from giving exemptions out? Why not exempt others who deserve to be there too based on past performances?

I see your point, but because it is the unique situation that is the Masters, Augusta National can give out invitations to whoever they see fit. Monty has earned this in the sense that Martin Scorcese deserves an Oscar, but may only win one in the "Lifetime Achievement" category. A player's lifetime record should be included because that's how Bob Jones saw his tournament...as a reward.

I personally don't care so why not? haha Will leaving him out hurt the Masters competition? Will letting him play in the Masters make other players jealous? How do players qualify for an exemption anyhow?

If they're going to give anymore special invitations/exemptions Monty definitely deserves one even thought he's not officially in the top 50 I feel he's still a top 50 caliber player.

I'd give the exemption to Monty over any of the women/girls they've given them to in the past. At least Monty has put his time in and derserves it.:D
chiantibro ..................... 'Course Tiger's gonna win, so the result is a given anyway  Gee some people will never get it.:nono: Tiger WILL NOT win the Masters. There, now that it's on cyber-paper, you can take that to the bank.:D

I think he should get an exemption. He has been playing as often as possible to move up in the World golf rankings. He is also playing well, his 60 in the final round last week was very sweet.

Thanks Mok. So Joe Ogilvie and Tom Lehman would not have qualified if they didn't place well at the TPC last week right? :)

Do I have to say it again?
WHATEVER !!!! :nono: Niether Davis or Tiger are playing well right now but at least in Davis' case its a pinched nerve in his neck preventing him from playing his best and not his ego keeping him from calling Butch. :hush: Did I say that out loud?

welllllll....looks like Monty's out...unfortunate for him but I think it was the right thing to do...can't just let people get exemptions for "feel good" stories.
