Man, you bring back some memories! 4 years ago I wish I had my camera. I had blasted a drive through a dogleg into the trees. I found the ball in the rotted-out hollow of a tree stump. The ball was about 4 inches below the level of the stump. My buddy asked if I was going to take an unplayable. Duh!

Easy shot. Use driver and hit down and ricochet the ball off the flat of the trunk. Ball will have top spin and run.

I do not jest. I say "easy shot" only because it makes it easier for me to commit on crazy shots. I'll hit 5 wood off a club sandwich from the patio if presented the opportunity. I once tried to hit a right handed 9 iron, lefthanded, turned upside down, to a ball half submerged in a stoney creek. The result? I didn't get nearly as wet as I thought i would. Gotta think positive.

This was from a tee shot at Rocky Crest earlier this year. A scooping 4 iron got me out but not very far.

I'd suggest a smaller tee next time though - carrying that around has got to be tough on the back :D

Related rules question:

I was in a fairway pot bunker the other day. Instead of taking a nice wedge and blasting out to safety sideways, I tried to pick it clean with a 5-iron and go towards the green. "THUD!!" I heard it, but I didn't see it. I half-expected to hear another thump somewhere behind me but nothing happened.

After a brief inspection I saw that the ball had wedged itself underneath the sod on lip of the bunker. It was a very soggy day, and a newer course, so I guess the sod had not completely settled into the ground. The ball was 2-3 inches into the wall of the bunker. Am I entitled to relief in this situation? If so, is it a drop back into the bunker?

You are entitled relief .... unplayable at the cost of one stoke

Hi Vokey Design

My goal was to 'break 80' and I needed a bogey on 18 to secure a '79'. Bad tee shots on both 9 and 18 but not nervous at all. Found ball beside a tree sitting on top of a tree root protruding from the ground. I didn't add up my score but I knew it was special for me, and fb then said Dad you better get this one out to the fairway and play for a bogey and your 70. I nearly chipped it past the fairway into the other rough. Then I hit a 9 iron a nearly perfect '10' to the front fringe with the pin in the front. 2 putted for my '79'.

That day the bad lie off the wood worked out just fine.

I hear ya bro', started with a ball literally beside a fence on #1 at Glenway last year, ended up with a double-bogey, went on to shoot a 75, my best round ever!! That's GOLF! :)
