View Full Version : Ideas for next years' Ryder Cup

I was thinking it would be fun to have next years' Ryder Cup be a two man scramble match play format.
Basically, both team members hit from the tee, pick the best shot and both hit from there until the ball is holed out. The other team does the same and the one score for each team goes on the card. Low score on each hole wins that hole.
If we took carts for this format everyone should play very quickly. Any handicap differences would have little or no affect. Scoring would be very low, likely under par for every pairing making the scores exciting to watch.
Also, it would be easy to add as many players as wanted to play and still have scoring the event quite simple.
Any thoughts?

I'm not a big fan of scrambles but I understand what you are trying to do. Maybe a pure match play event (unhandicapped) with two groups using the same tee time A1 vs B1 A2 vs B2 . And then a Pro-Am event like you suggest.

I'd rather it be straight up match play, team vs team, but not best ball off the tee. Each player plays his/her own shot and the low score on each hole per team counts.
And I'd also like this match to take place in around June/July so as we MIGHT be able to schedule it on a weekday where all players can use a vacation day to easily get in 36. But also want it to be around that time as the weather is a bit warmer and we can wear shorts. :D

I think it would be alot of fun this way!
Simple, easy, and to the point. It will be much quicker on the course as well thus avoiding any unhappy encounters with Marshals.
Got my vote.
I will also agree to have it earlier in the year.....and on a weekday if possible.
IF we were to do 36 in one day, have one 18 as a scramble match play.....and the other as better ball match play.

I really don't want to see your legs.
I like the idea of setting a weekday date set in Feb for some time in July to give everyone a chance to book off an go for 36. Better rates on couse fees, more time to organize swag...

I once played 18 holes at river road in london with my uncle in 2 hours.
Time is money. Booyeah.
I think we should also make the pairings by handicap. This year was too easy with our sacrificial lambs out there.

Regarding handicaps, I'd like the players to by assigned to different groups based on handicap
e.g.
0-6
7-12
13-17
18+
Captains wouldn't disclose the actual hdcp ranges until everyone submitted their handicaps, to prevent people inflating it to get bumped up to next range.
Then do the captain's picks from within each handicap range.
I'd rather not do a scramble. It's alot faster but we're all experienced golfers and IMO scrambles are more suitable for the company type tourneys where you have a large # of people who have hardly played the game. To speed up play a bit, simply play two matchups within each grouping so you can actually concede a hole and move on.

The only problem with handicaps is most people don't have real handicaps.

We tried as best we could on both sides to pair up individuals based on HDCP's, but I'll admit it was tough. Some matches were a little tough, we know....but in the end even though Team East on paper was outmatched by some 24 strokes, you guys still played very well. :) In the end we lost by 44 shots, but when you factor in the HDCP's vs number of players, that's not a very big margin.
I think it could still work this way next year Wayland, but sometimes you never know just how it's going to turn out as it all depends on what game everyone brings to the table come game time. Team West came to play, that's for sure...I think we all left our games at the Tim Horton's near Jay's house, so next year's strategy is to stay the hell away from that place before we play!

A quick round for me is just over 3hrs. A good round around 3.5-3.75hrs. A decent round is 4-4hrs15min. Longer than that, I'd be in a tourney. :D

Completely agree with you and not b/c I'm on Team West. Team West flat out played better. Just look at the top 5 scores. Only 1 from Team East and that was for 5th spot.
Next year's event will be organized by Team East and a Team East member can basically figure out the format. Match play of any sort is very entertaining to play regardless of it being like this year's format or not.

I run a Ryder Cup event for a group of guys that play with me here on Fridays all summer. We play 36 holes on a Saturday and the format is as follows. We have 24 players and all have matching uniforms ... we've so far we've done jackets, windhsirts and vests, and we always get hats as well, and this year I'm going with golf shirts. It makes it look great out on the course seeing the teams. Last year I had Cory Woron from TSN make a video for me as if he were doing a Sportscentre script talking about inside jokes of the guys playing (he is doing it again this year for me) and I had a Bagpiper start the day off coming out of the fog on the first hole.
Morning Round
Front Nine - 2 man scramble
Back Nine - 2 Man Team 4 Ball (Better Ball - play your own ball and take the best score)
Afternoon Round
Front Nine - Singles Matchplay
Back Nine - Singles Matchplay
We play 2 seperate 9 hole matches in the afternoon, that way if a guy is not playing well on the front nine, the match isn't over by the 12th hole and it makes for more total team points to be had which makes it come down to the wire at the end.
Pretty well nobody has an actual handicap, but we go off of what their average scores are on this course and try to match that up with the pairings. We don't do any strokes, just go straight up.
I have done this now for 3 years, and September 30th will be the 4th year and it has worked perfect every year and been close every year ... 2 of 3 years so far it has come down to the last group coming off 18 in the afternoon round.
