View Full Version : TGN golfing buddies + competition

As this site matures, it's pretty easy to see a pattern where you have a core group of regulars who visit and post often. There is a constant influx of new members and of course the quiet "lurkers". One thing about this site is that it's hard to remain anonymous for long as golf is social and it's hard NOT to want to play a round with someone you've chatted for a while here.
One thing I've noticed over the past 18 months being a regular poster and active in arranging games is that a lot of golf "buddies" have developed and with that comes a little friendly competition.
how regular do you get together with a person you met on TGN? do you play a competitive game? if so what is it (match or stroke)? how close were your abilities? What are the results? Did the handicapping keep the game close? We're not talking about gambling for real $...mostly pride and a drink at worse.
Before TGN did you have a regular game? are you finding that you play more and more with TGN folk than with your "regulars"? Hence becoming your NEW regulars?
and lastly...wasn't the first meeting with someone you met on TGN like a "blind date"?

this is a fact finding thread as we need some feedback for a grand little plan I have for 2007 ;)

I've actually stopped playing with my usual foursome from years past. two of them got married this summer and their wives won't let them out of the house anymore. ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST!
I actually remember my first post on this forum selling my old ERC Fusion 3 wood, and ROCKIN RONNY contacting me about picking it up for his buddy!
I ended up meeting Rac, Nobdyhere, GRT, Flakes and a few others that day and it all went DOWNHILL pretty quickly. HAHAHA
A couple thousand dollars, basically a brand new set of clubs later, I've definitly met some great people on this forum.
As for games, goign into the Ryder event, I started playing a bunch of match play games with a bunch of people off the site to get into a frame of mind of 'match play' whether single or team. Sadly I got myself waaaaaay in over my head trying to compete with a certain Guelphian. BUt its always been fun, and I've learned a lot about my game through it.
Looking forward to whats left of this year, and getting ready for next season and your idea for 2007 ;)

I personally came on TGN to find people to play with in the area. I just moved back from London and I dont know many golfers here. Its been great meeting new people and getting to play once in a while. Sometimes I still go out to the course as a single.
I havent really had a regular game with anyone because most people live in the GTA so weekends are usually the best bet to get a game in.

I do have a regular foursome that I golf with a couple times a month. A couple of them are good golfers but are not as enthusiastic as I am so I end up dragging their butts all over the GTA to go golfing. I make all the tee times and force people to show up even if the weather if iffy, if I'm not there they often end up hitting the casino instead
I do find that meeting others on this board has drawn me more into the community here, and that I am starting to golf with TGNers more. I sometimes pop out to a course as a single, but finding people on the boards here is just as easy, and usually less of a crapshoot. I don't think I would dump my regular group as they are my good friends, but it is nice to find people who like to play more than once every couple weeks.

I'm more of a luker then a post ho, but I do post the occasional one here and there. I actually found this site by accident through Redflag. I used to have a regular 4some that I played with, but with their busy schedule I hardly play with them any more. I did found a new 4some through the people I played poker over the winter and have been golfing with them quite a bit this year.
I played a few rounds with fellow TGN since I joined and hoping to play more with you guys in the future.

The guys that I started golfing with go out for a game far and few between. I'm a certified golf nut so this board allows me to converse and play with a group of other golf nuts.
I've met some really great people off this board and I'm glad I joined up. Now if only they hadn't turned me into a bit of a club whore....

I have played a fair bit with leftintherough. We have also taken our kids out together as well. I did have regulars I used to play with but they joined a club and I didn't want to tie myself down to one particular club, so I have kind of lost touch with them. I play in amatuer events in GAO and Great Lakes events as well. Other than that I'll shoot over to Don Valley or Westview as a single.

I play with a regular 3-some but have played more with TGN members this year (and probably played more CL than public).
I don't play any competition games - usually when money is involved my game goes down the tubes. Plus playing from different tee boxes makes it difficult.
Blind date??...LOL:rofl: I guess in a way it started as a "Blind date" but seeing as I play with guys who are married (and I myself am not...) I don't know if I would call it a blind date. lol.....
But I am very thankful for my TGN golfing buddies because I have played numerous courses that I would not otherwise have had the chance to play and have made some great friends....maybe one day I will have game enough to take their money! lol Just kidding.

Dub,
I hope your not referring to me about the club hoe comment. I joined a while back just as a club hoe and looking to share my knowledge of golf and equipment.
I have made some extremly good friends on here and only play pretty much with guys form the site now. I have my pretty steady group of RACMBS, and Nobdyhere jopined by others such as Tehflakes and Fresh. I have been involved in the planning of groups, as well as participating in many others as well. I try not to have matches as I I have learned in the past, taking someones money is a great and easy way to make enemies.
Looking forward to meeting many many more members.

I've met a lot of people here on TGN over the last yr or so and have been golfing a lot with a handful of them for last couple of months. I haven't really start a competition for like drinks till recently because the lack of confidence in my game to compete with others. Nothing boosts your confidence other than the first win after loosing all the time.
I love match play because you’re never out till it’s over. For example my partner and I were down 2 with 3 to go and won 2 out of the 3 to tie. The feeling of the comeback was amazing and just drives me to play in the next one.
So Dixon where are the tee times for Sunday? A little East side revenge I believe is in order. *cough cough*;);)

how regular do you get together with a person you met on TGN?
Maybe twice a month throughout the summer. I've played more rounds with Fresh outside of Mrs Westbeach.
do you play a competitive game?
Definitely do. Most of the games I've played with TGN guys are competitive in one way or another. You of all people should know. :)
if so what is it (match or stroke)?
Exclusively match play.
how close were your abilities?
Its usually pretty close when we're all playing good. Of course, when one person plays bad, then it's a different story. Regardless of ability, I've ALWAYS had fun playing with other TGN members.
What are the results? Did the handicapping keep the game close?
The results are mixed. Handicapping definitely closes the gap between two players but at the end of the day, the person who played better always wins. ;)
Before TGN did you have a regular game?
Sure did. I still do actually. It's a matter of balance.
are you finding that you play more and more with TGN folk than with your "regulars"? Hence becoming your NEW regulars?
Yes, and some guys are becoming one of our "regulars".
and lastly...wasn't the first meeting with someone you met on TGN like a "blind date"?
The first time I met somebody from TGN was through a sale. This first time I golfed with a TGN member, I think it was Fresh. I had helped him with a Scotty Cameron purchase and we had a round set up at Lowville. Didn't really know what to expect but it was all good. I lost the match that day only b/c I gave him a shot a hole on the back 9. LOL.
All in all, my experiences with TGN members have been very good from selling one of my many excess clubs or on the golf course. I'm very lucky to have met a lot of good people to play golf with and even luckier to have met a few guys where we can talk about our life, career, etc.

Since joining, I've been to one TGN outing and have played with several as a single. I haven't gotten into the "competition" part of the forum yet. With my schedule with students, I don't get to play as often as I'd like, and most of the time it's a spur of the moment thing. I've enjoyed posting the tips and the feedback I've received from that.

I've been to 3 TGN events and can't get enough and have been fortunate that I haven't played with any TGNer that I didn't get along with. Pretty good group of folks here that just love the game. Now if we'd wear "Hello my name is..." stickers, I could figure out who's who! :D

I pretty much found the site after looking for a local forum with guys talking about equipment...found that in spades here!:D
Some days I turn into a post-a-holic on here and I enjoy reading the frequent posters here as well.
I dont think you could say I had a reg foursome...more of a couple guys at work and one of their buddies would go out every few weeks and hack it up. I havent had a regular playing partner since I moved here. I have only golfed with a couple TGNers here for the exception of the Ryder Cup last weekend. The guys I met are all a pretty friendly bunch, but nothing has sparked a reg foursome here or playing partner either. Travels hinder this alot. Therefore I have played as a single almost all summer.
I have been to two TGN outings.....the first one this year at Copetown.....and the Ryder Cup.
I did play competative matchs, and sometimes still like to take a couple bucks off the guys if possible.
Since being on here I have bought more equipment than the last 19 years combined!!! Way to go...your nothing but a bad influence!
Great Site.

My first outing was the Ryder Cup event. What a great way to meet many of the peeps on this forum.
Could not have asked for a better 4 some. Jeff, Scott, and Nathan were very friendly and made me feel welcomed from the get go.
Can't wait to get out with a few more members in the future.
It's nice to see that this group is not a "clique"
To anyone contemplating joining a memeber for a round or an event, just do it. You won't regret it. Lots of laughs and some good times will be had.
Now, wheres that picture of DanL and his "shocker" in front of team east

I also had a great time Marc......you sure as hell kept it close on Sunday man, if it wasn't for those few holes where you kinda lost some momentum, you were always down the pipe and are a fantastic putter!
If you would have beaten me though, that would have been the end of our friendship and I would never have spoken to you again. :p
Anytime you want to get out for 18 Marc, you know where to find me! :)

Have played some rounds with individual tgners...nothing too competitive..as you never know how the other guy will take to being beat:rolleyes:
Overall this is the site that I most frequently spend time on.....including ebay:hush:

Andrew,
Look into a membership at Elmira next year. I was surprised at how many members and regulars we have from the Guelph/Fergus area. Apparently the drive isn't bad because of the country roads that are always flowing well without any traffic to speak of. The extremely reasonable membership rates don't hurt either. ;)
Condiitions are always great, and we have a really tight membership here. If you like to eat out, the chef here is great and we're really spoiled by having him. 99% of the entrees are less than 10 bucks, and are restaurant quality meals. No overcooked hot dogs here!
As both of my regular group members are moving away, i'm actively recruiting and would love to have a TGNer out at the course.

This site is great at work when things are slow. I heard about this site through my neighbour who is a friend of Mok. Most people I've met through here have been from B/S/T, but have found everyone to be very friendly.
Haven't had the opportunity to golf with any TGN'ers, but always willing to meet other golf nuts. My usual playing partner and I go out every Wednesday, so if any of you who are lucky enough to have hump day off send me a PM.
