Here's a picture of a fairway at Augusta. The entire course is like this. Unbelieveable. My carpet at home isn't this perfect.

I've seen other personal pictures of Augusta National, it's unbelievable how green the course is and perfect it is!

I took the picture from a link at Bombsquadgolf.com. There are a ton of pics there. A member went to the practice round yesterday.

Augusta is mad crazy about keeping their course in top shape all year long. They have heaters underneath their greens with state of the art drainage and sprinkler system. They also have huge spotlights on some greens where its shaded so that it gets its dose of light. Crazy to read some of the maintanance that goes into Augusta.

I don't think he played there...went to watch? Correct me if I'm wrong but he would need some major major hookups to be able to play a practice round at the Masters.

He went to watch, although I do know someone who's played the course a couple of times and he's not exactly a celebrity or has major hookups. Right place, right time.

Every green at Augusta has heat and air conditioning plus fans for air flow and drainage. They test the water that comes through the greens from underneith so they know what fertilizers and pesticides are working and if trace amounts are still abundant after traveling through several feet of soil. I imagine several tunnels under each green like a subway system connected to each other.
Can any of you imagine how much setting this up cost the members? These guys make the rich look like they're on welfare.
They even close the course when we have winter even though its plenty warm enough to play. I think they use this time to make changes to the course for the next years Masters and to continue installing underground stuff.
Many people have pulled up to the gate offering insane amounts of money to play and been turned away every time.
That place is tighter than the US boarder. They know who you are before you get to the gate, having run your license plate.
If you're a member there you are among the elite of old time money. I don't think new money gets in.... ever.

There was an article in Golf Digest (with pics) awhile back that explained what happens to the greens when the course is closed. From what I remember, every green is ripped out and the drainage system is inspected, upgraded or outright replaced. I'll see if I can find the article. The amount of pipes under the greens was ridiculous. It looked like a city sewage system. As for the members paying for course maintenance, I might be wrong but I seriously doubt they do. There have been rumours that there is an annual fee to be a member at Augusta, but it's right in line with what we'd pay to be a member at Glen Abbey or any upscale golf club. Expensive, but not ridiculous. Augusta National does not need membership money to stay in business. They have an invite only tournament every year in the spring that takes care of their finances. I've heard first hand from someone who's played the course and spent a little time in the clubhouse that members still have to pay for all their food and drinks. One thing I found funny was this, apparently there's a rather large and impressively stocked humidor in the clubhouse and all cigars are $1. The beauty is that it's run on an honour system. You pick out a cigar and leave a dollar in a basket next to the humidor. I can see all these old rich guys sorting through their hundred dollar bills to try and find a single for their cigars. I'd love to read a tell-all story about what goes on at Augusta National when the Masters isn't being played.

It's actually closed from May to Oct each year, saves summer wear and tear
