After Tiger flushed his Cameron off the green today, he was running a little hot. It's appropriate to be polite and respectful at any golf tournament...especially the Masters. But why do people clap for bogeys or doubles? These guys are professionals, and Eldrick was steamin'.

Hey 962b maybe its because the people watching the tourney would be all out to make bogey or double on that hole. Ha ha.

Agreed. Why applaud when somebody plays poorly? I wish golf wasn't so polite, we should be able to BOO for bad shots and poor results. That would make for better entertainment. :D

hhahaha
they only applaud when the players made a "bogey save"....or "double bogey save"...ususally some good shots that they must have made to put them into that position and avoid doubles or triples+
lol...what i find funny is that some of the wave at the fans or tip their hat as a sign of thank you after they get a bogie.....or..a bogie save..lol

For the same reason after you play lets say softball......you may have won 10-1 but yet when you go shake the other team hands, you will say "good game" even though you demolished them 10-1. :D

I hear ya, but along with the good sportsmanship and everything I think the crowd should be allowed to express their feelings since they are paying customers. I don't mean to heckle and be rude, but just to show some displeasure with bad shots. It would get the player all reved up and see who can handle the crowds better.

When Fred Funk shot 82 today, he still shook the hand of his playing partner. Clapping when a guy taps in a six incher for double, in your baseball analogy, is like clapping when Billy Buckner let that infamous dribbler get through his legs to lose the World Series. You'd be the guy clapping because "at least he tried to stop the ball...". When Funk tapped in for 82 today, he didn't concern himself with the galleries politeness, believe me. He was steamin'.

Don't remind me of when Billy Buckner blew it for the Sox. That was awful.

"Three cheers for (fill in name of vanquished foes). Hip-hip-Hooray! Hip-hip-Hooray! Hip-hip-Hooray!"

I played in an OGA tournament a few weeks and was paired with a real beaut. He hit some decent shots and I would say 'nice shot'. After a couple of these, he turns on me and says "that wasn't a good shot, I'll tell you when I hit a good shot!!"
Man, some people. So then I didn't say one word to him..... but do you know how hard it is to play a round with someone and not say anything?!?

It's a polite game. No reason other than that.

Holy Smokes! What a jerk. and don't give me this "ooh, he's being intense", "he's in da zone" talk ... no excuse for being a jerk ... unless you were being sarcastic and saying 'nice shot' after he slice one OB into the adjacent cornfield.:)
