View Full Version : Michelle Wie - STOP the 'torture' Omega European Masters
TourIQ
Nov 1, 2006, 12:10 AM
The Executive Director of the European Tour has contacted the brass at the Omega European Masters and told them not to extend a sponsors exemption to Michelle any time soon. The course is too long and demands too much of a short game which Michelle does not have. Apparently he said to stop the 'torture' ... it can't be good for the girl. [this from Golf Central tonight]
All I can say is 'ABOUT TIME'. Finally an Executive with a set of Nads. Now if Michelle wants to Monday Quality then by all means she earned the spot.
Also 'Montgomerie takes on Wie in Japan' per http://edition.cnn.com/2006/SPORT/golf/10/31/monty.casio/
How does she get such good pairings?

hmm.. are they really concerned about Michelle? Is he trying to prevent a "wasted spot"? Are the sponsors going to agree given how much more coverage there will be because of Michelle?
I'd love to see michelle play perseonally, regardless of whether she might make the cut or not :P
BTW, do you guys know any way to watch golf tournaments/highlights WITHOUT a tv...? Maybe a site that streams them or bittorrent downloads and such?

From a golf stand point, it is the right decision and right thing to do - A lot of golf purists will applaud that as a gutsy move to protect the integrity of the game.
On the other hand, from a business stand point, Omega pays Wie millions in sponsorship money. She is featured prominently in their advertising campaigns. Additionally, Omega pays millions to sponsor the tournament. And now they are being told how to conduct their business.
I imagine by going public with the letter, the Tour Exec. Director is putting the ownership on Omega squarely - Now it is damn if they do, damn if they don't.
I can not imagine the brass at the Omega HQ across Lake Geneva would be happy, and it wouldn't surprise me if they decided against sponsoring the event when the current contract runs out.

Omega also has deals with male golfers, namely Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia - I doubt they would pull out sponsorship due to Wie not being able to play.

As was stated in previous threads when the "pro" Michelle people were arguing with "anti" Michelle people, eventually the hype and interest would die down as MW continued to prove she was not capable of playing against men. Now that scenario is starting to come true. MW's freak show is now completing it's run!!

Actually HN, while we were referred to as "anti" Michelle, I would like to state again that we are not against Michelle. We simply feel that she is not ready to play at the PGA level and risks her career by following her current path.

I was one of the "anti" group and I don't like calling it "anti" because I too am not against MW as a player, although I do think she is to young and should finish high school and so does the LPGA since they restricted her tournaments, I am against her getting the free rides on the mens events due to her marketing hype. Now that pretty much everyone has come to the conclusion she cannot compete in these events, her interest is drying up along with her free ride invites.
Go ahead and play against the girls, but until you are #1 in the world leave the men alone.

If you are not with me you are against me is a commie phrase. Just because many of us did not want to see MW play those tournaments does not mean we hate her or are against her. She is a descent player, perhaps she will one day be great (personally I doubt she will be more then mediocre at best), but as of right now she definitely does not belong on PGA Tour. Simply put she doesn't have the game for it, and she has proven it time and time again...

Grobar, a man of true wisdom. I'm not anti-MW but I think it is a circus show and I've been saying that for about 2 years now. I think Bj and her inner circle like Leadbetter are exploiting the girl and she is falling flat on her a**. It sure can't be in the best interest to put the money first, which her father Bj has guided her to do. Parents responsibility is NOT to exploit their kids!
They are ruining the girl by putting her in situations that drains her confidence and fun for the game. It can't be fun to finish an event in tears. Then all the nonsense of playing at Agusta, the Ryder Cup, top 20 at the Sony, not to mention the 300 yard drives, etc., all to extend the marketing $'s and hype with no wins as a professional.
If she doesn't learn how to win in the next couple of years against the LPGA stars then yes it just might be mediocre, considering many were quick to compare Michelle to Tiger just 2 years ago.
If they don't soon get her on the right track with a win, then her stardom to greatness will not see the light of day. Personally from my vantage point as an armchair quarterback, I do not think the girl has the mental fitness to dominate any tour. Her team looks closely at blaming those around her rather than the person swinging the club. If I was Bj the first thing I would do is get a new inner circle to guide the girl, and that includes dumping Leadbetter for good! If I was Michelle I would dump Bj as quarterback. I would love to see Michelle win an event. I cheer for most underdogs, but less for those with $20 million in the bank.

And another very well written point.
Yet, there will still be a bunch of peeps lined up calling us "anti-MW". Golf is not just about swinging the club. There is a major "head" portion that needs to be developed, no one is immune to that. Even Tiger learned his craft before jumping in full time.

Thanks leftintherough. Michelle definitely had her set backs this year.
She doesn't know how to win, how most professionals on tour are gauged.
I think she has been misguided on 'what to say' on camera to keep the marketing [circus] frenzy going. Other young ladies have more 'fire in the eyes' to dig deep and get the job done. Her 'head' will dictate her status in golf history. Not looking real strong as of late.

You can start a thread to rant about Brett Quigley for making over 2.6M this
year and career earning of over 7M without ever winning since turning pro in 1991.
Wie's career is now backed into a corner...She can play on the LPGA, but her endorsers pays her millions expecting her playing in men's tour events...If she focus on the LPGA and wins, people would be like 'of course, she is supposed to win anyway', and there will be pressure for her to try men's events again. And we know she will get beat up in men's events. If she does not win on the LPGA, people would be like 'Omigod, she is too young, she needs to learn to win or go to school or get out of golf'.
