Wow this is a great question Focker. Although I am a BIG Tiger fan. I must say that I think he is stuck in some rut. Maybe it was all the planning for the wedding or maybe it's just his hot Bride. :) We all know how distracting hot babes can be to one's golf game. haha I think Vijay will hold the number one spot for next year.

I'll have to say The Big Easy (Ernie Els)will be #1. His game was there all season long, but came up just short of winning all 4 majors. Nobody has a better swing than him right now and the monkey is off his back since he finally won a tournament last week at the WGC. Then again, VJ plays about 10 tournaments more than anyone else every year so that increases his money earned and chances of winning. It will be a battle between Els and Singh.

I vote for Els. I don't think things will improve for Tiger dramatically in just one year, Singh and Els were pretty close this year and I like change. So Els it is.

His swing is more relaxed (hence the Big Easy!), but I wouldn't exactly call it the best swing out there right now......VJ is sticking shots from his driver right down to his wedges....

No! Tiger will be #1! :D

Just a question...what does Tiger have to do in order to gain the Number 1 spot again? And what do his opponents have to avoid doing so as not to make it easier for him to regain Number 1?

That's easy.....he has to win tournaments! :D Id' say if Tiger can win 2 majors and 3 other tournaments next year, it's pretty much a lock on #1 again.

Yes, winning tournaments is the main thing to do for Tiger but there are so many other factors in the equation. Money earned, top 10 finishes, how the do in the 4 Majors, etc all factor in.
I don't think Tiger will regain #1 if he just wins 2-3 tournaments. He was to win atleast 1 major and have a strong year. Also, if VJ continues winning 5-8 tournaments a year, Tiger will NOT retake #1. Don't forget Els either. He can take over #1 this year too, let alone next.

I think if Vijay can carry the momentum he's had going for the last few months into 2005, he has a good chance he'll pull away enough that with his consistency would be able to maintain the #1 ranking.
I'd like to see Tiger back up, or Els.
I'm not a real big fan of Vijay or Mickelson. Love their golf, but ya know, Phil's not really a guy's guy, and Vijay ... well he's just not lovable.

Ya, it's probably not a fair portrayal of the man. But the story always needs a villain! Sorry, Vij! You fit the bill in that you're always there taking stuff away from the golden boy _______ (insert name here e.g. Phil, Ernie, Tiger)
I followed Vijay and Weirsy for a few holes on the Saturday at the BCO. He actually seemed very very nice.

I think VJ really probably is a nice guy....I've heard of some of the charitable donations that he's done, and most of them have been under the radar implying that he's not really doing them to receive any media attention.....
I do find him a bit boring to watch probably cuz of his demeanor on the course...even tho I hate to admit it, I believe lately Tiger has been pretty rude to fans and the media....I don't blame him with all the scrutiny he's been getting lately, but I don't find that enjoyable to watch either....but I'd still watch Tiger over VJ any day! And I think millions of fans do too!

Because of Tigers previous successes he's always expected to do well. I think the media plays a key role in adding pressure to Tigers game and increasing fans' expectations of Tiger.
In my opinion, it's always a pleasure to see Tiger play, but he has to change his swing to adopt to his changing body; michael jordan did and so has VJ. This I think is a key factor that will improve his game; he seems to be missing many fairways and having to recoup too many times.
Tiger has been doing well the past few years and is always one of the money leaders, but he needs to win some majors.
VJ is currently and deservedly the number one player in the world. He's a very nice guy and would never refuse an autograph, an interview and is a generous tipper.
Bottom line is that everybody would like to see Mr. Woods as the #1 player in the world.

I think you've hit it right on Malarky, Vijay doesn't get the "golden boy" treatment at all. I also, followed VJ at the BCO on the Sunday and he was very receptive to all the fans hollering to him. He would smile back and wave while the others would not (except Weir). He's a great mentor for anyone wanting to learn golf. Just his work ethic is inspiring enough.

Even though I am a Vijay fan, I would also like to see Tiger turn his game around. There's just no competition for VJ anymore!!! haha...all kidding aside, Tiger is the best thing that has happened to golf in the last 7 years. He is always a pleasure to watch (even during his slump this year). He always comes up with the most creative shot making, even when he's in the most impossible situation. Watching him during 2000 and 2001 when he was winning almost every tournament was unbelievable. I wish he would return to form and move back to #2 behind VJ...hehe

Was it you, fs, who told me that golf is a game of recovery?
I think Tiger's letting the scrutiny get to him too much and he's reacted negatively to some comments made by colleagues. Aren't pros always having their game analyzed? I hope he overcomes all the talk and doesn't let it affect his game still. He needs a rest, and hopefully his 3 weeks off on his honeymoon helps.

Yet another tournament win for VJ surpassing the $10 million mark. He also did it in a very impressive fashion shooting a 65 in the final round. He's really making a case for this poll...much to my disappointment

Yes it was me who told you that "golf is a game of recovery". What I meant by that is more specifically related to your specific round. Being able to "recover" after making a bad tee shot, getting out of bunker, making a par save, or a crucial birdie after a bogey is "recoverying".
I guess in a broader sense though, Tiger's got to "recover" from all the critisism that he's received over the past season ranging from his firing of Butch Harmon, his season long slump, his break up with Nordegren, to taking too long of a honey moon and skipping tournaments. I agree that he must "suck it up" and just focus on returning to his once dominant self! There's no "roar" in Tiger anymore...just a little "meow"...haha...YES, EGo, its quite disappointing isn't it??

My point is that both Quotes make Tiger sound like he's master of recovery.

hmm...I think the reason that Tiger gets so much confidence from the fans and pollsters is because he has proven to the golf world before that he can make swing changes and recover. He practically always recovers from bad shots to save par too; we saw too much of that in 2004. Tiger can do amazing things on the golf course and I can't wait for the Mercedes championship.
