I've been looking for a phone with a decent quality calender/organizer for a long time. I don't need to send email, not looking for a camera or ipod, and don't need something the size of a matchbox. Does anyone know of a phone that syncs to google calender or a similar app?

A Palm syncs to the palm desktop application. I have a simple palm (non-phone) and I love the calendar program both in my phone and for my desktop. I would suspect since I am on a mac that the application is quite outdated compared to the MS version, so thats its only gotten better.
I don't have any experience with any other phones/pdas unfortunately.

this is overkill, but my blackberry 8700 has the google gmail client, google local maps and google talk currently and a new google calender app coming soon hopefully. Currently i use google calender via my google mobile homepage, but yes, an integrated calender would rule.

why not use the calendar that comes with the BB?
I think a Palm Treo might work fine for the OP. I don't know that it would sync with google calendar, but you could do as Simar and connect via google mobile homepage.

I'll put in my vote for the Symbian OS and Nokia's E62.....slick, easy to use/navigate through and they have FINALLY integrated BB connect on this unit so data can now be shared through BIS. Full QWERTY keyboard and you can hack it to sync with a Mac. :D You can also view edit text documents like PDF, excel, Word, Powerpoint....it's a nice unit, just a bit bigger footprint than the 8700r.
The beauty of the E62 also...data compression like the BB units.....Palms do not offer this and that is why many coroporate/enterprise user stay away from the Treo.
If you are looking at getting a unit that would be used for combined voice and data, then I'd point you towards the BB as well....I'm just a big BB fan based on it's design......that and the Apps you can use with them.
OR
You can wait until April....RIM will be launching the 8800 on the Rogers network. ;)

Bought my wife a Palm Treo 650 for Xmas. She is only using it for the phone, the organizer/calendar, and contacts, which will link up with her computer at work.
Also has camera, video camera, MP3 capabilty, etc. which I/She really doesn't care about.
Also has ability for internet and emails, but I am cheap and did not purchase a data package to allow for this. If she wants this for work, she can get them to pay for the data package.
So far she is quite happy with it. But in general I think you lose something when you combine everything. The phone and its functionality is not as good as her previous phone. The calendar links up with Outlook, but the functionality is somewhat limited compared to my IPAQ. The link up process with her computer is very simple, as I think most are.
Nice in that it has multiple input capabilties, being the keyboard or the stylus.
Before I purchased this, I inquired with a couple of others who use it and they are very happy with it. They say it is easier to use than a Blackberry. I cannot comment as I have not used a Blackberry.
Hope this helps!

The blackberry excels at email and the original poster didn't seem to care about that. The BB's web browser sucks.
The Treo (Palm OS version) has a decent calendar/contact package in Palm Desktop, for those that just need something simple. It works well as an organizer and is still a decent phone. I've got a user here that could not get adjusted to a blackberry and we threw a Palm Treo at him and he loves it. He also doesn't care about email, just the calendaring/phone functionality.
I've found traditional phones (non-pda type) to be quite poor for calendaring, usable but just not having a full keyboard makes them annoying to work on. Throw in small screens and it just complicates the matter.
As for data compression, it doesn't sound as though the OP is intending to do much downloading, so I doubt that's a problem.
