I have an 8 year old set of Wilson ProStaff irons with original grips on them. I'm really used to them and planning on using them for one more season before upgrading. I've been reading a lot since I signed up to these forums and it seems like a lot of people change their grips. I'm still learning the technical aspect of equipment but what advantages does switching over to newer grips have? Now since my irons are 8 years old should I just save my money and get new updated irons? Or should I regrip them and use em?

I don't know about anyone else but I found this response a hard read. Sorry, I don't mean to offend if your english is not good.

If you're really comfortable with this set of irons and are perfectly happy with them, there's no real need to change them unless you're wearing down the clubfaces and their grooves. Now since they're a little old, the grips are probably a little slick or worn since rubber tends to deteriorate over time. The advantages of newer grips are:

1. You can get the right size (stock grips may not be the best fit for you)
2. You can get the "feel" you want, and it'll be fresh so traction and tack will be at an optimum.

It's important that you're able to hold the club with a relaxed grip that's free of tension to make a good swing, and good grips that fit will allow you to do that. Check out Pure Golf at the Markham Golf Dome, those guys will take care of you with service second to none!

With your current irons, it is always recommeded to change your grips annually. I would recommend having them changed, and you don't have to break the bank in doing so either. You can get a great set of grips installed for around $40 for your set of irons that will last you through the season and still be there if you decide to keep them for another season or just keep them as a back up once you do upgrade.

Please feel free to check out my grip deals I have going on right now in the affiliates section.

I think before you do anything you should go to golftown and actually hit some new irons to see the differance in todays technologies. Irons have come a long way in 8 years. My buddy has some Wilson staff irons and he's now looking for a new set. They were great sticks he says but its time to move on. Good luck and while you're there you can pound drivers all day long.

Hey no problem. I wasn't trying to be off topic. I am interested in this topic as I am also considering a regrip of my clubs.

Hey I'm a huge spendaholic and love to buy things just to have new. But my X-18s have been working so well for me I'm afraid to change them. I think I will just regrip them.:)

Thanks, that sounds like a great idea but the problem is I have a few more clubs I got to buy before I upgrade my irons. I just bought a set of used PING TiSi Tec 3, 5 and 7 woods to add to my bag which replaced my Wilson 3 and 5 woods. Now, I need a driver as I've been playing a 3 wood off the tee for 5 years now. And I also would like to upgrade my old Spalding putter as I'm not too fond of it. I think my best bet is to regrip my irons and try to get one more season out of them. Who knows there are always great used deals around and sometimes I can be an impulsive buyer but that would come after I get a driver and putter first.

Thanks too all that replied and commented; Much appreciated.
