The newer 2 ball improved upon the previous generation by having two-toned shading on the top, so that it has parallel lines that frame the 2-ball configuration.
However, the new 2 ball with this improved alignment only seems to come with the white steel insert in the face.
This is what I bought a few months ago, and my preliminary sense from my indoor rug putting is that it lacks the softness and feel that I prefer.
In fact, I just noticed that Golf Digest's pick for their Hot List is the 2-ball with the softer insert...but it doesn't have the alignment guides that I like.
So why can't they just make one with the two-toned alignment shading---as well as a central line down the middle of the two-ball, which I have seen on a couple of U.S. retailers' websites----with the softer insert?
Grrrr.

You can get a White Hot XG 2 Ball putter... nice soft feel and the two tone lines you're speaking of. As for a line down the middle for even more aid in alignment, any pro shop will put one on for you (a sharpie will work just as well if you want to take it to your club).

I don't believe the new XG 2-ball has a 2 tone gray on the top.

Take a peek... the 2-ball XG appears to be one solid shade of gray across the top.

The White Hot XG 2-Ball SRT is two tone... are we looking at the same putter?

Can someone clafify this for me regarding Odyssey putters:
Didn't they put the steel insert in because tour players were complaining the plastic or the all white face did not give them feedback on their putts? I went from the steel to the white hot.
Why does Harrington and Furyk both use the white face without the steel insert?

I believe Furyk uses the White Hot... Mickelson uses the White Hot XG. No steel insert for either. As far as I know, its just what they like.

On closer inspection, seems that the SRT now has the two-toned shading while the 2-ball doesn't.
Maybe a ploy to tilt people in favour of the more expensive model?
(I will still like to have a centre line thru the 2 balls themselves)

Are you saying get the pro shop to put a line down the middle of the 2 balls to help with alignment?

Yeah... one of my buddies bought his from a pro shop down here and he asked them to draw a single black line down the middle to help with alignment... they did it without even flinching... apparently they've done quite a few. Is that too much to ask up there or just unheard of?

The concept of an assistant pro (at best) in the back with a ruler and a Sharpie is kind of frightening to me.
Even if the line is drawn perfectly (not 1 degree to the right or 1/2 degree to the left), I would always be wondering if the alignment is correct.

What greens are best for the metal insert vs using the white hot? do the differents types suit different speeds of greens>?

If you're paranoid with someone drawing lines on our putter with a Sharpie you should bend your putter to Pelz.

Or just switch to a Scotty Cameron :p

I'm with you 3whack!! I have the 2 ball with the steel insert and, after testing out the XG at GT, I was hooked on getting an XG. However, I just couldn't find one with the two tone striping and just decided to hold on to my current 2 ball.

As long as the ball goes in the hole, I don't care what it looks like!

I was looking for a centre shafted SRT like my Odyssey two ball and I could not find one. I then tried the Rife two bar with adjustable weights and I really liked it. I actually find the two bars a better visual alignment aid and the two bar has a little more weight behind it so it promotes a smoother swing and follow through and I find it better on the longer putts.

Me too, the feel is just unbelievable. The new insert is a great improvement over the White Steel. Got mine off Ebay for $50 less than GT + tax. Now just waiting for the UPS man to arrive!

is the XG just a softer feel?
I tried it out compared the white steel an actually liked it. But the guy at GT said pros dont like it as much as the white steel as it gives me audible feedback.

I know that it is hard to imagine someone at GT not knowing what they are talking about:D , but the situation is exactly the opposite.
The very reason that Odyssey is now offering (starting in February) a softer insert in those models that were only available with the White Steel is that the pros didn't like it...White Steel is ok when playing on slow greens, but not when you need feel and touch on fast greens.
While Scottie C's have a hard face (which obviously works extremely well on their putters), this experiment, in my view, has been a complete failure for Odyssey (ie. Callaway/Hogan/Spalding), the company that revolutionized putters 15 yrs ago with the soft insert.
Take a look on the PGA, LPGA and Sr Tours---you will rarely see a shiny (ie White Steel) face on their Odyssey putters.
Or, take a look at Golf Digest's lists of what various tournament winners have used over the last year. While I didn't see one winner who used the White Steel, the following used White Hot putters:
* Furyk
* Sorenstam
* Ochoa
* Immelman
* Cristie Kerr
* Tom Kite
* Dean Wilson
* Eduardo Romero
* David Edwards
* Bobby Wadkins

If it's a sofet feel you're after the XG line is the one you're looking for, if you can past the fact it doesn't have the 2 tone colour.

$185 cdn... shipping and taxes included.
That's almost a $50 savings compared to GT + tax.
And I just love the poker chip ball marker!

Question?
From watching the golf at the Riviera today I noticed players using "white hot" putters. Furyk, Harrington. Mickelson has an XG. Beem I think had a white steel.
Do they still make white hot putters? I have only seen XG and and white steel at GT? are the white hot older models?

Furyk looked like he was using some sort of an Odyssey prototype putter. Kinda like a cross between a 2-ball and a Scotty Cameron Detour. He has always used the 2-ball, so not sure, but it looked like something different on Sunday.
