Thinking of buying around the April timeframe when I move downtown. I know of a place that will give good bulk discounts so seeing who would be interested in upgrading at that time?

If you're interested, please answer the questions you're comfortable in answering:

LCD or Plasma?
Size or estimated range interested?
Budget for everything including cables and speakers?

For me it's
LCD
46" to 52"
Approx $3000 - 5000

I'd be interested in a 42 or 46" LCD. I haven't decided if I want to go high end (ie. Aquos or Bravia) or if I'm just gonna get something cheap for now and wait until the SEDs are out.

SO everyone knows i got word today that ONtario will be introducing a "eco" tax in other words a cash grab when you make a tv purchase. It will be in effect this summer and will range from $20-$50 depending on the size of your television. Alberta has this in place as i just put this information up on the HBC internal sales upsite.

I'm interested in a samsung or sharp. 40inch. However the new products will be launching in march and in the summer.

Count me in for interest, please.

37" or 42" hd LCD, Sharp, Samsung or Sony.

By disposal, do you mean that you get paid for taking the old set to the recycling yard?

So, there will no longer be all the old TV sets allowed to be left at the curb for collection? I could see a lot of illegal dumping coming up, even more than there is now.

I understand that a lot of computer stuff ends up in China and is stripped for recycling value.

Is there not a company in Toronto which takes computer stuff and rehabs them for charity, schools etc?

Hmm, different topic, but important. just did a search and found this for recycling computers and electronics.

If you guys are looking to unload any old TVs to schools, I would be more than willing to help out. I am a teacher and know that several of my colleagues (myself included) would love to have an old TV set in their classrooms (saves us from lugging the small TV out to the portables).

As an FYI, Hitachi and Toshiba are getting out of the plasma business. They'll be strictly LCD for the time being.

If I could afford it I'd go plasma Pioneer Elite series, I already have a nice surround sound system. I could go for a nice 37" - 42" and just watch golf.:D

I recently purchased 37" JVC LCD Flat screen love it, sorry TheBannanaSlice gave the old one to my mom. Sports in HD is UNREAL  you have to understand I went from basic analog cable to digital HD, what a difference, whole new world. Anyways, reasons for my particular purchase:

Size: 37" I have a small living room and couldn't really fit much bigger, taking into consideration of distance I'm sitting from the screen and just plan over taking the room due to size. Mine is on a stand, don't have an open wall to mount.

LCD or Plasma: It's very bright in my living room, I was told LCD better for bright areas and the plasma for basement\theater type rooms. I play a ton of video games, and I've heard plasma has a tendency to burn images in the screen when left on for long periods of times and I was really impressed with the picture quality when the 2 where side by side.

Budget: This is where it gets tricky, and if you tell my wife I'll deny everything, started @ $1700 for the TV, needed a home theater receiver, old one was shot, $199 great deal considering Sony 6.1 Surround sound, then came the power bar, monster cables it really started to add up . I hear you can save some money on cables going the HDMI route, instead of component cables.

But with all the expenses it’s well worth the jump. :D

Can’t wait till the MASTERS in HD

You have no idea how great golf courses look in HD....I'm so happy I bought my new 52" Grand Wega, watching golf in HD is like nothing I've ever experienced.

Not to mention, plenty of other sports and movies look great in HD.

LOL, agreed. I find myself watching Nascar on occasion because they've got one of the best HD broadcasts with great surround sound. You feel like you're actually IN the race. Football in HD is amazing too. Let's not even talk about the Master's coverage. You can actually see the breaks in the green and the elevation changes. Unreal!

monster cables

You can get cables as good or better for 1/5th the cost. Monster cables are pure marketing. Try this, take out your monster component cables and instead use 3 yellow RCA composite connectors (red to red, blue to blue and green to green obviously)... notice any difference? Didn't think so. Cost of connectors... $3 from a dollar store. Of course you are losing the monster's the superior sheilding and insulation (you need this because...?). Of course that solution looks kind of cheap, I use some "sheilded" Philips cables I got for under $20.

As for digital audio connections (optical or coax) and HDMI/DVI - just make sure the cable is long enough and buy the cheapest one you can find. These are DIGITAL cables, either your receiver/tv is getting the signal or it's not, there is ZERO benefit to an expensive brand cable.

:D

Agreed about the cables.
I have bought a few from mycableshop.ca and the prices were great.

It's amazing what some shopping around and haggling will do. I managed to haggle and bargain my way into a Sharp 32" LCD for 800 all in. Last week I bought a Sharp 26" for 850 plus tax which I can take back tomorrow.
The new one just seems so much more monstrous. A 'good' big size for my bedroom and I way more than I thought I would get for my budget. Even came in under budget.

The guy at The Brick even tried to get me to spend $200 on monster cables and $300 on a shite warranty. All about the upsell pressure.

Nice try.

You should check the Digital Home forum (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/index.php) for information on purchasing any type of HDTV set, not to mention audio receivers and speakers, cables, DVD players, HDTV providers, satellite radio, etc. They really know way too much about this stuff.

I recently purchased a 32" LCD panel. The room its in can't support a bigger TV at the moment, but once our basement is finished its hellooooo 46" Sharp Aquos ;)
