With the start of the golf season fast approaching, I thought we'd start a poll on who's joining any of the golf Tours out there and which one.
I'll be playing in The Golftown Tour once again in 2007 - B Flight.
Oops, forgot to put a slot for - "Undecided" and I can't edit the poll.

Being a first year player I wouldn't mind getting in to a tour. But I don't want to get in over my head, so would the best one be the Mulligan tour?

I believe The Mulligan tour lumps all players together (varying handicaps), meaning the group you play in could have much more experienced players. It still is a competition, albeit, a friendly one and so most players are trying their best. Everyone is also counting a legitimate score i.e. taking into account penalty strokes, drops, etc.. - The Mulligan Tour, doesn't mean you can get or buy "mulligans"..heheh...
The most important thing is that you feel comfortable playing/competing. I personally would recommend against joining a tour for a beginner unless you have a decent handicap (less than 20). But the truth is, you can join anyone you want. It is your money, afterall. :)

I can't quite score that low yet. My scores range from about 98 to 105. So maybe I'll put some hard work in this year as well I'm putting alot in to lessons this year, and I'll be ready for the following season.

i played Great Lakes last year, but there were to many screw ups so I have decided to try Duffers Dream this year. Similar courses for less money on Duffers. Playing compeitive golf is a grind but it is fun to put yourself in that situation. When you play well it's a huge adrenelaine rush, and when you play bad it goes the other way. I met a lot of nice people last year on Great Lakes but like I said there were to many administration screw ups last year, so I thought I'd try a new tour and compare.

I played in the mulligan tour and there were people shooting in the 100s all the time. They give you a handicap (not sure the calculation) and your score is based on that. The mulligan tour is probably the best place to start and then move up to one of the other tours once you improve.
The Mulligan tour is competitive but more on the fun side. I liked it because it exposed me to organized golf without a lot of pressure.

I dunno if the CJGA is considered a tour..but i'm planning to play a few events for the first time since I feel it's time to see how my game is under a little bit of competitive pressure

What did you think of the Golftown Tour. I was thinking about joining it this year but it seems kinda pricy $$$. I was on the Great Lakes Tour last year as well but I really don't know if I will join again this season.

CJGA.
The courses are great and the prices are at best, fair.
Its more of a thinkg to do with your friends, and if you are good enough, you can win some quality prizes. Last year, my best prize was a vokey spin mill.

Google "duffers dream" and it should come up. It would be close for you in terms of driving as most courses are in west GTA to Hamilton area. Let me know if you have any problems.

Tried that but I only came across the 2006 tour information. Have you signed up already for this, I guess it would be good to know a few people out there.

Hi Felsteinb,
Before the start of the 2006 season, I compared a few of the amateur tours out there. The Golftown Tour, in my opinion, had a better schedule of courses and after a lengthy conversation with one of the owners about how they run it, etc.. I decided to sign up.
Pricey...well there's no kidding about that for golf in general. Last year I spent the most ever on golf (tournament fees, mileage, greenfees, balls, etc) but it was still alot less then I would've spent being a member at a decent course. I admit, I was hesitant at first to sign up because of the registration fee and the tournament fee's ...if for example you compare what it would cost you to play in all the events on the tour compared to how much you could golf on your own spending the same amount, and your goal is to play as many rounds of golf as possible, then forget any of the tours and just play on your own/with friends. This was my dilema at first but then I considered the reasons why I would be willing to pay a premium above a regular green fee.
I basically considered the extra's I was getting - opportunity to win prizes (both whether I play well or not), the competitive aspect (competing against others of similar level), access to private clubs (play courses I wouldn't otherwise be able to experience), and lastly the list of great sponsors that add value and recognition to the Golftown Tour.
It was a great golfing experience in 2006 and the tour was very well run which is why I've signed up again. Once again, they have a great 14 event schedule lined up with some of the same courses as last year and 7 new ones, including more private clubs. Taylormade also signed up as a sponsor this year and is even providing product!!!
In the end its up to you to determine whats important to you and what its worth but if you have any other questions...go ahead shoot :) ...PS if anyone out there is signing up, do so before Feb. 1st 2007 to save some cash!

The rates are going to be the same as last year an they should have a full field this year (100 golfers). If you need more info you can contact Devon at duffersdream@mountaincable.net

When you say you could win prizes if you play well or not what does that mean. What are they things you would win prizes for not playing great? Also what types of prizes are there at the events?

What I meant by that is players who play in the events are entered into a draw for sponsor product. So it doesnt matter if someone comes in last, they are still entered in the draw. They do the draws right after the event is finished so some people hang around and chit chat with the other players. If the person that wins the draw had to leave after they finished their round and aren't around, they get an email letting them know they've won and make arrangements to pick up their prize.
Last year they did a draw for Ecco golf shoes (retail $250) at every event. I won the draw for the Ecco golf shoes at one of the events! :) You get to chose which ones you want from a catalog, fax in your order...and poooofff 3 days later they arive on your doorstep! For the "Majors and the Tour Championship" (2 events during the season and the final event), they also did a draw for golf trips to Ixtapa, Mexico - All inclusive packages each worth $2,595! I'm not sure if they'll have the trips again this year.
So far what I know is that they once again have the draws for Ecco golf shoes at each event. They are also doing draws for Taylormade equipment (1 driver, 1 wedge, and 1 putter) at each event. Last year the trips they gave away was an awesome surprise! I hope they can do that again.
P.S. They also award prizes for longest drive and closest to the pin (last year I believe it was Second Skin Hollas apparrel - really nice quality and functional) - I wish I had won one of these :( . In every event you could also choose to be in the skins or not - these where also paid at the conclusion of the event and fyi this was always calculated in front of you - using a large scoreboard so that everyone could see each of their scores along with all their competitors.
For more details on the prizing for those that place in the top 3 in each division/flight...check out this link:

Hope this helps...it'll be great to have other TGN'ers out there.

Felsteinb, thats great!
But hey I'm not really trying to convince people .... heck that just means I now have more competition, if not in my flight then for the draws! :p
All I can say is I had a great experience, and thought I'd share it with TGN. I've learned alot from this site myself so I'm trying to give back with my 2 cents worth :)
P.S. don't forget the registration fee goes up on Thurs. Feb 1, 2007 from $125 to $175.

Hey TGN, I've been golfing for just over a year and a half now, and was considering competing in a tour. I fluctuate around a 10-15 handicap and can hit a long ball. I work weekends as of right now. Which tour would be best suited to try out? Any suggestions would be appreciated,

Welcome to TGN, Albatross!...10 - 15 eh, pretty good for only a year and a half. There's a few to consider - Duffers Dream Tour, Great Lakes Tour, The Mulligan Tour and the Golftown Tour. Don't sign up for the golf town tour, this will just mean more competion for me :p  ....there's also a recent thread on trying to compare them, click below:

Thought of playing tours, but dont want to be tied down to playing a certain course at a certain date.
Would rather be able to arrange a game anytime, with some good players and play matchplay......for beers of course.

Hello everyone. Just signed up and saw this querry about golf tours.
I have played on the Mulligan tour for a few years now and it is a great way to meet new friends and play some golf. The handicaps are based on scores from your last 5 events so they can fluctuate throughout the year. Don't try to sandbagg as you will get caught and asked to leave the tour. I don't know anyone yet who has tried because the golfers on tour are pretty honest and are there to make friends and have fun.
The Great Lakes tour is more for the advanced player. If you really enjoy the competeive aspect, this is a good tour to join.
Never played the Golf Town tour as it is during the week. I have met the tour organizer through a previous tour and he seems to have a good grip on how to run a golf tour. I have friends that have played and they highly recommend it.
The Duffers Dream I don't know much about. From last years site it looks interesting and I will check them out this weekend at the Hamilton show.
With these and probably a few others out there, for me the main theme is to get out and play. Casual or competitive, it does not matter just as long as you enjoy the game and all that you want to get out of it.
Thanks for listening (reading).
Fore!!!!! Well in my case it's more like Five!!!!!:)

I joined the Golf town tour. The cost to join was reduced by the cost of my Golftown Club membership so It only cost me $46.00 to join. Not bad considering early registration is $125.00 by Feb 1 and 175 now.
