A couple of notes about the Globe. In todays Report on Business magazine (comes with todays paper) Lorne Rubenstein details the clubmaking skills of Katsuhiro Miura of Japan who has a pretty impressive resume. Anyone see that?

Also I just got through the Globe's first ranking of Canada's best public and resort courses in Canada. An interesting read.
Some notes:
-Jasper Park Lodge (Thompson) is #1
- Bigwin is #2.
-Rocky Crest #5
-Taboo #6
- Wildfire is #8.
-Eagles Nest #14
- Copper creek #15
- Osprey Valley Hoot is #16
-Timber Ridge #33
This sharply diverges from the annual Score list. They are different in that Score includes Private clubs, but even amoung the public it is very different.
Let the debates begin!

Planning a trip to BIGWIN asap before they close it up and the public can't get on anymore. Hoping to get there the second weekend in May.
I was assistant @ Deerhurst back when they opened and loved it. A friend of mine played all the Muskoka tracks and he said BIGWIN was the best and Deerhurst was probably the worst of the bunch. His opinion mind you but he is a 3 handicap.

What I don't understand is, why isn't St. George's in Etobicoke on the list? That course was rated by Golf Magazine as one of the Top 100 in the world! I've never played there before because it is a private course. Has anyone here been on it? I mean Top 100 in the world is quite amazing! (i think it was like 96 or something though) and it doesn't make the Top 10 Ontario lists? Something's not right!

The Globe is public tracks, so no St. Georges because it's private.

IMHO Bigwinn is a nice resort course. The service has gone downhill since it opened, and this ranking is not going to help. I will not be going back after my last trip, and the member who booked me in even feels awful about the direction the club has taken since it opened. #2, Not in my books.

Thanks Mike but I think in this case I've got to make my own assessment. Service isn't a priority of mine at an away golf course. I'm not there for a lesson, I won't store my clubs there so I certainly don't expect anyone to clean them. I much prefer to walk over riding and I'm sure they don't have caddies so I'm not sure if anything the staff does will affect me.... until we eat between 18's.
I plan to play 36 in one day when I get there. I've never been to a course that will charge more than cart fees for a second 18 and I hope these rich @#$%&'s follow that fine tradition. :D

GRT Just be prepared for the following. My assesment of Bigwin was not from one trip but 3. So I have given it a fair shot, and money.

Don't eat there unless you really want too. Burgers and Sandwichs are $10, $5 of that is just for the privelage of eating on the island. The best way to play Bigwin is to walk it for sure. I have walked it twice and it was great. The course is very nice. You will have to try VERY hard to miss any fairways, they are huge. I think vistors green fees are around $170 tax in unless you go with a member, who has to be playing with you. I would be happy to give you my hole by hole insight if you want it, send me an email.

Grass Roots,
A couple of notes. As for it going private, I doubt that will happen this year or next. The memberships are not selling as quickly as they hoped.
As for playing 36, that is usually not a problem. The first couple of years it was open they charged us only $15.00 for the replay. We usually played Mondays.
I did not play last year but my buddies went and they charged them $45.00 for the replay. You may want to call ahead and ask about the policy.
As for service, in all my visits we have been treated really well.
My only tip, play from the tips on 6 and 18 for sure.
Enjoy
