In another thread thare have been a number of comments about VJ Singh and how consistently well he is playing. One of the aspects of his swing that very admirable is the distinct pause he has at the top of his backswing, and yet he can still generate enough power to launch the ball 300 yards plus.

In watching golfers over the years I have observed that many golfers have better swings than their results show, because of being so anxious to get back to the ball which results in over the top swings and sometimes a loosening of the grip at the top changing the position of the club face.

If we just tried to complete the backswing with a feeling of pausing, even for just a fraction of a second, I would bet that most of us would improve our ball striking.

thx for the info. it was one of the things I realized during the middle of last season that my take away was much to quick and i have slowed it down...still can't do the pause thing yet, cuz it causes me to think too much during that minute split second it's hanging there :D , but i'm working on smoothing out the tempo of my swing...

This is something that is good for a double-plane swinger (Vijay, David Toms), but a single plane swinger (Adam Scott, new Tiger) doesn't require the pause, as a DP swinger needs time for the hands to "fall" into position before the rotation. Jim Hardy explained some of this in a recent golf mag, though I prefer Hank Haney's thoughts on the subject.
