I have a golf mad son who is looking for part-time summer work in a golf related business. Very bright, mature kid. Looks older than his age if that's worth anything.

He's doing the rounds at all the local clubs but it appears most of the jobs are filled. If anyone hears of anything, let me know with a pm or email.

We are in the Etobicoke area but he'd be willing to consider anything west of Yonge St. and within Peel region.

Thanks.

Being 14 years old, he's going to have a tough time finding a job in the retail sector, especially seeing as to how competitive the market is these days and how knowledgeable staff are becoming. Not saying your son isn't techie enough, but you know how it is these days...the younger they are, the farther away most customers keep. I remember what it was like when I worked retail at 17 and was quite knowledgeable, people just didn't seem to trust me as much as the older staff. What I did find rewarding though, was working at a golf course part-time on the grounds, which eventually led to me working in the pro-shop and learing even more than I would have in a retail store, as I was allowed to be more independant.

My nephew who is 14 just got a full time (part-time) summer job at the Toronto Ladies on Yonge Street just North of Center in Richmond Hill. The hours for him when school's done is 6:30am to 2pm, 4 days a week and they are paying him pretty decent cash. Plus he gets to play golf for free there anytime after 2pm and can also use the driving range for practice.

Has your son looked into either applying with Clublink to see what they have available, or at a local public/private course in your area? I think by starting at this level, it will give your son a good taste of both sides of the industry and will really help him in the long run, if he chooses to pursue a career in this field.

Wish your son good luck though! :)

Here's the problem with Clublink - they have this policy where they will not hire a relative of a member (to work at that member's home course). The only nearby CL course is BoT where I am a member so he can't work there. We're going to make the rounds at the private courses in the area.

You're right about retail. I can't imagine a 14-year-old will have much credibility although he knows more about golf equipment than most 40 year olds. So we are focusing on backshop or grounds work. Something backbreaking so he can learn the value of hard work!

Hi, I just saw an ad in my local paper- the Villager. Markland golf club is hiring all positions. Since I live in the west end, I assume the course must be as well. I've never heard of it. I'm sure you could google it. Or drive into the Bloor west village area and grap a Villager and check out the classified ads. Hope this helps.

I looked into Clublink for my 14 year old and the problem was that he had to be 16 to drive the golf carts.

Markland Woods is a private club on Bloor Street West in Etobicoke. Beautifully kept.

I'm going to call Markland Woods tomorrow.

Too bad there are no caddy jobs to speak of anymore. That's what I did at that age and it was a great way to earn some extra cash and spend time on the course.

I have been working at scarlett woods golf course since grade 9. I am now 16 and this will be my third year working there.

I started working as a cart cleaner, and then a starter/marshall, and now I work in the junior golf camp.

This year I may be working in the shop as well as still teaching junior golf camp.

Being in etobicoke, I am sure if you called Humber Valley, you could get something there. I also know that many private clubs in the area give out jobs to juniors that have some golf privledges as well.

There are many people working this year at scarlett woods so I would aviod that but call Humber valley and some of the private clubs in the area and you could definitely get something.

Good Luck

Hello there Ontario. For your sons age, he might be better off starting as a caddy for a private club. If he doesn't feel like doing that, check out Toronto Golf Club (Lakeshore and Dixie). I worked there for about 4 years in the backshop. It's a great place to work for a young guy. When I worked there they provided food, as well as great golf perks.

Tell him to go around to the courses again after the end of AUgust. In many cases jobs open because univerisity kids leave and they need someone until the end of the year!!

IMO...a golf course is the absolute best job for a student. You are outside in a beautiful setting. I worked in back shops and loved it. You work outside and are right beside the 1st tee when your shift is over! Good luck!

Call Don Valley and ask for Scott Myles, he is the head pro there. DO it quick before the course is sold and/or developed!!

I remember caddying as a kid and all the abuse the young kids endured from the older caddies. I'm not just talking about verbal abuse either. I doubt it's that bad now but still I'm not taking chances with my 14 year old. It's probably a back shop or range job for him. He's a big strong kid who can drive a tractor (worked on his uncle's farm) so those sort of jobs would probably suit him.

He's making the rounds now to the clubs in the area. Thanks for the suggestions.

Is he still looking? I know we will be looking, for caddies come the sping. You can message me about it and I can give more details.

Thanks but that's at the other end of the city. He needs to start looking soon, I suspect. When do the clubs start hiring for next season?

My sons both worked at Scarboro in the summer and they applied at this time of year so the early bird gets the worm.

What's the minimum age at Scarboro?

I'm pretty sure it was 15, but I'm not 100%. As you pointed out earlier it's way too far to commute from your neck of the woods.

Thanks. Just asking because I'm pretty sure that would be consistent with other private clubs in GTA.

I used to work at Angus Glen and they usually hold their job fairs in February. I think most golf courses do as well. Give them a call and find out. They`re a great organization with great managers. Be prepared to work hard and with odd hours but its worth the perks.

I think with private clubs, they usually prefer referrals more than hiring from outside. Not sure if this is true or not.
