What do you guys think about hybrid clubs? What are the benefits and do pros use them too?

personally i heard a lot of good things about hybrid clubs...if you are unable to hit those long irons, these clubs may be the thing for you. you get the distance of the long irons with the swing of a fairway wood... actually we had a short discussion about these clubs earlier HERE (http://www.torontogolfnuts.com/showthread.php?t=40&highlight=hybrid)

I realize this is a super old thread, but hey, the topic isn't that old!
I like to refer to hybrid clubs as "the magic club". While playing I love to mock Peter Kessler and his "Perfect Club" series and commercials.
"This is a job for the magic club!".
I inititally started with the Taylor Made Mid-3 at 19 degrees loft. After using it for a while I stopped using/carrying my 5-wood, as the hybrid was so easy to hit, and so easy to get decent if not great ball flight. Later last season I also added the Hogan 4h club to my bag, which is a 24 degre loft hybrid. I use it instead of a 4 iron (I keep the 3 iron in the bag for knock down punch shots). I call the TaylorMade one the "magic club" and the Hogan "mini-magic".
A few times last year I played a few rounds of "1 Club Challenge". Basically playing 18 holes with only one club, the magic club (hybrid)! It was totally fun. You can chip, putt, and do all sorts of wicked things with a hybrid... Just ask Todd Hamilton... ;)

I have a Hogan 3h and love it. It's much easier to hit compared to the 3-iron, and I like how you can use it in both the rough and the fairway.

SW20,
How do find the distance of the hybrid compared to the iron? I'm thinking of getting a 3H to replace my 3 iron, but I don't want something that ends up being 20 yards longer. On solid strikes is there a noticable difference?

My game was horrible at the end of last season when I got the club, so I can't really comment. The ball flight is definitely higher than the iron, and the club is much more forgiving than the iron.

Hey AF, great read, thanks! I also noticed that Cobra has also launched their new brand of Hybrids...just saw them at Golf Town yesterday!

I picked up a 19* last year and love it. I am thinking of getting a 23* to add to the bag this season.

If I get a new club in my bad this year, it might be a Hybrid club. I keep reading about how they're so easy to hit. Though I am comfortable with my 3 iron, I would like to see how much better a hybrid can help my game. I read the TaylorMade Rescue is the best out there. Surprisingly the Nike CPR is up there. I never had real confidence in Nike golf clubs. The Cobra Baffler is highly rated too.

What do you guys think about hybrid clubs? What are the benefits and do pros use them too? I am normally very skeptical about anything new, believing that the marketers just want to separate me from my hard earned dollars for a club that is worthless. Seeing and trying the "Perfect Club" was a good example of marketing hype of, IMO,a very poorly performing club.
Having said that, I bought and assembled a Wishon 321LI hybrid 1 iron, and was astounded at the perfrormance of this club compared to my 3 iron. The ball went farther for sure, significantly higher, but most importantly, a lot straighter. It is still in my bag.
One advantage that the Wishon has over other hybrids is that it is assembled with a .335 wood shaft versus what many hybrids use, a .370 iron shaft. This allows for more flex at the bottom and helps get the ball in the air. So if anyone is looking into buying a hybrid, ask if the shaft is .335 or .370, and go with the .335 if you can. You will not be disappointed. Or, get the .370 and have it reshafted with a .335 wood shaft. Clubmakers can get little adapters that will allow a .335 shaft to be installed in a .370 hosel.
