I found this at home when I got back from work. I was wonderin' if any of you in RichmondHill/Markham got this dropped off at your home and could tell me what is involved.
How do they 'rectify' the problem?
I just have basic cable TV from Rogers.
-No High-Speed.
-No Digital.
what's up?
"Dear Customer:
During a routine patrol of your neighbourhood, we detected signal leakage originating from your residence.
Industry Canada requires that Rogers continually monitor and correct any signal leakage originating from our cable system. Signal leakage can interfere with aircraft navigational equipment, your current Rogers' service as well as you (sp!) neighbour's services. In addition, severage leakage may impact the proper functioning of wireless devices within your home.
Please contact the offices of Intek Communications (approved contractor for Rogers Cable Inc.) toll free at 1-877-822-2232 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, to schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience in order for us to correct this problem at no cost to you.
During the appointment a Rogers certified technician will rectify all potential leakage points in your home, answer any of your questions you may have and confirm that all your Rogers products and services are working to your satisfaction.
Sincerely,
Team Manager, Technical Operations, York"

I've never heard of this sort of problem, and it sounds weird to me. Particularly weird is that they want you to call an independent third party contractor. I'd call Rogers to verify that this is legit before doing anything.

I suspect they are looking for illegal hookups (which also includes having more than 1 tv connected).
Interestingly enough I had a visit from Rogers (Intek) yesterday. I noticed the truck and the guy in the area while home at lunch. When I got home from work my cable wasn't working. I called rogers and they sent out a tech (Intek) this morning. (I was given 2 days discount for this month because of the outage though I had to ask for it)
The guy comes and in a few minutes I have signal again. when I asked he told me that someone had disconnected me. I think we all know who the "someone" was but my question is why?
A further note is that if the cable in your area was buried years ago it could be defective now. If you only have analog signal then you probably aren't too affected by it. But if you upgraded to digital then you may find that you can't get a clean enough signal. (this is what happened to me) so they have to bury a new cable.
If your cable signal is fine in your house (ie you can see it and your happy with it) then you don't have to let them in. They can test the outside cable from outside your house.

I've read about other stories just like this.. it's actually legit, but they do a good job making it sound shady, unfortunately.
Sometimes they just replace your main cable splitter with a newer model (1 GHz), and/or they'll put signal terminators on any open connections to prevent "leakage".

I had this happen a while ago also. It is legit.
But it sounds awful shady.

Spoke with my neighbour at lunch and he was talking with the Intek guy yesterday. They are going around looking for "leaks" and apparently the guy shut off my cable because he thought it was a "leak". He was going to shutoff my neighbour but since they shared a mutual love of dirt bikes the guy left the "leak" alone.

Use a pair of needle nose pliers to open the box. Plug it back in. It's happened to me half a dozen time over the last couple of years.

I didn't know you could do that. I called Rogers and they came out this morning at 7:30 and hooked it back up.

This is my industry so i can give you the real deal here.
This is 100% legit. First off, there is nothing to be worried about. the leaking signal is not harmful - it is the RF signal leaking into the air. Under CRTC regulations, Rogers can only have a certain amount of signal leaking from their system. This leaking signal can interfere with air traffic, police/fire radio, etc. Once they do period checks in neighbourhoods to find signal leakage inside homes. How is leakage caused? It can be due to cable outlets not being terminated, bad/old corroded lines or connectors, crappy jumper cables from your VCR to you tv, etc. It is very simple to get fixed and it is also important. They will be in and out in no time at all. It will not cost you a dime and they are not looking for illegal hook ups.

I'm sure all those things are just as you say they are Flaghunter....but I think they are also looking for illegal hookups.
One is a requirement by the CRTC to stop leakage, the other is a desire by the bean counters to stop leakage:)
