I'm moving from Burlington to Toronto and I'm looking for a good moving company that also can provide a short-term storage option (1-2 months).
Moving a not very full 4 bedroom house to give an idea of the size of the move.
Anyone have any experience or suggestions for a good company to use?
I know I can call random companies from the Yellow Pages, but I figured I would check to see if anyone had any good experiences with a particular company.
Thanks for your help!

I've done two local moves with Two Small Men with Big Hearts Moving Company without issue
but moving is all "hit and miss" at times

My neighbor/friend used PODS after sourcing out other storage places. He said they are by far the cheapest. Plus they are a golf sponsor:D

Thanks for the suggestions.
PODS looks amazing! It might be perfect for our needs. I can't believe I've never heard of it before. Thanks BH!

Oh yeah, I remember thinking what the heck is PODS?? Then moved on... I guess I should have paid more attention!
I priced out a move, and it looks like it will cost around $375 not including any muscle to help move the large pieces of furniture.
The last time I moved, I did it myself (with the help of friends) with a U-Haul. That was from a small apartment to our house, so it was pretty easy and cheap. I have no idea how much professional moving should cost.
So does anyone know the cost of a typical local move?

I moved from a 900 sqft apartment to a 1400 sqft house inside the city 3 years ago and it cost me $1200 plus tip. I used tippit richardson. The team I had was fast and efficient (about 7.5 hours).

I've used and recommended Francis Movers a few times all with great results (albeit a motley looking crew). I think they are out of Scarborough, but they did just move a friend of mine from Burlington to Toronto recently - so I do know they travel.

I can't remember the name off the top of my head, but avoid a company located around Jane/Finch (found out this was their location later). I can search through a phone book and verify it 100% should you require it.
Basically, they showed up late, the owner called my girlfriend every name in the book over the phone, I called the owner every name in the book, yada yada, the police got involved and he got charged & convicted of uttering death threats and sexual assault. :help:
I later learned he had stolen all of this moving equipment from another company and allegedly had former connections with a Russian crime outfit.
I don't suspect I need to reiterate this, but don't deal with them :p
Ultimately we went with 'Two Small Men with Big Hearts Moving Company' who were fairly scary looking guys (especially after the ordeal we had previously) but were amazing, super fast, respectful of our things, and had a great sense of humour. I'd have no problems recommending them.

Recently moved to Stoufville from Markham and used Greg and Sons - great guys, flat rate of $1400 for 1800 sq foot house with 5 appliances. Very fast, couteous and no damage to any goods or the house. Highly recommended!!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Now at least I know approximately how much professional movers are going to charge. And which ones to avoid!
So it seems like I have a few choices if we don't go the PODS route.
Thanks!

Don't recall entirely - I moved a 3 bedroom house (altough I did get rid of a lot of furniture for $500 or $600 - but I do stress that I did get rid of a lot of stuff prior (and was only moving 10 minutes away).
My friend who moved from Burlington to Toronto I think paid around $400 for a 1 bedroom apartment / condo.
The owner (Francis) - actually came to my house and gave me a firm quote in advance - with you being in Burlington, he may not do that, but I'm sure would give you a ballpark....

Wow, the quotes sound expensive. My move - granted a 1 bedroom, but fully furnished and within the city - cost me $250. Joe the Mover. He's been used by many of my friends, and is excellent.

Bringing back an old thread, but I just wanted to thank everyone for their great suggestions for moving companies.
After calling all of the ones suggested, as well as a few more, we decided to use KMS. Their rates were better than most of the other companies I called offering similar services, plus they seem to be pretty reliable. Their warehouse location in Mississauga and the inclusion of 30 days of storage in the price were also a plus for us.
I considered using a pod, but I discovered that positioning the pod on the driveway of our new house would have been a significant challenge/impossible. And with the parking restrictions on our street, leaving the pod on the street would have been difficult/illegal.
Hopefully all goes well with the move and I won't have to do it again for a while!
