I am in dire need of help! I just returned from my round at Ussher's Creek. Shot an 88 but it seems as though every one of my iron shots were hooked. If only my iron shots were on, i could have done so much better:rolleyes: . My drivers were going straight, my wedge shorts were straight. What the hell is wrong with me? Am i trying to turn my wrist too much? :help: :help: :help:

It could be in your setup. Do you have the exact same grips on your irons as you do on the driver? If they are different, you could be gripping the club differently. If not, take a look at just how "strong" your grip is on the irons. It could also be tension on the irons and not on the driver/wedges.

Setup and address the ball. Look down at your left hand (assuming you're right handed). How many knuckles do you see?
Grip is a very good starting point if everything is going left.

...my wedge shorts were straight.
Even straight, that sounds painful. ;)
And furthermore ... three people comment on the grip but not one of you tells me which grip produces the lefts.

Ya, you got to hate it when your wedge shorts are straight. LOL
Too strong a grip (for a right hander, more knuckles of the left hand and more fingers of the right hand is visible at address) usually leads to your shots going left. The strong grip generally leads to a shut clubface at the top of the swing and at impact.
Other thing that can possibly cause left shots could be having too closed shoulders at address causing you to swing too much from the inside or a combination of things. Is it a straight left or a draw/hook ball flight?
If it's THAT bad of a ballflight, I think you need to see or find an instructor.

I would say your grip is a bit too strong. In your setup, rotate your left hand until you can only see 2 knuckles.
Also, check your grips. If your driver grip is different to the irons, that will also affect how you grip them. All of your grips should be exactly the same size, so you don't have to make adjustments everytime you change clubs.

and if that all doesnt work, I would have your clubs checked for lie angle, too upright can cause you to pull or hook the ball too.

without seeing your swing or your grip - i would think the shafts are too weak or the clubs have too much offset - try a set of irons with a stiffer shaft that should help, on a side note i played s300's for years and drew / hooked the ball everytime, i switched to px 6.0 2 years ago and now basically hit it straight everytime unless i put a really bad swing on it

I had the same problem on my first round this season - great witrh the driver and wedges but most iron shots going well left. The problem was that I was going over the top. If your swing was in balance and the ball was going straight left (i.e. not hooking), then try keeping your right shoulder back at the start of the downswing. It worked for me - no shots blocked left during my next round - instead I started shanking my wedge shots!

Have you ever had your lie angles checked?

When I was hitting left, one of the things my instructor worked on was my hand position at setup but also at the impact area. If your hands are finishing a little high, that can close the face.
The other thing is I find when I am hitting left, is I check if I am still swinging inside out and if am I striking the club on the inside of the ball.
I'm not an expert, just some of the things I have worked on with my instructor.

Lol never seen a scratch golfer who didn't know what a strong grip was ;)
I have a pretty strong grip, in the attempts to put the club more in my fingers, and I often have the same problem with the hooks. It is usually just because my hips aren't clearing and opening up through impact as quick as they should, or as quick as I'm used to.
Slow hips, or hips parallel with shoulders, is a remnant of my old swing in which I would have to slow down my hips otherwise Id hit slices. But now that I have better tempo, posture, backswing, and swing in general, I maintain good impact position with fast hips (and thus more power). So once my hips slow down, because I'm tired or thinking about something else, I will pull my shots, mainly with irons.

Justinn, I also can put a hook or power draw on occassion. I find that for me it happens when I get ahead of the ball, meaning my weight transfer begins too soon. You might want to try and keep your left leg stable during takeaway, make sure you're not moving back too far.
A great drill that works for me is to take my 8 iron, narrow my stance so my feet are only 8 inches apart, then take the club to my waist, swing down onto the ball and follow through to my waist. This drill helps my balance and ball striking. I use it for my last 15-25 shots every day, hope it helps. :)

Your right elbow could be too far from your body when you take the club back. I find a flying elbow can produce some nasty pull-hooks:rofl::rofl::rofl: by experiance of coarse.

The Hook Doctor is in da house!!
Everything that's been mentioned in this thread thus far could be the cause of your hooks.
One thing that I didn't see mentioned that I've been working on this year (and it's working) is to make sure the top of your left wrist is flat when at the top of your backswing. I used to have it cupped which would cause the clubface to close excessively.
