Today we, unfortunately had to have my dog Comet put to sleep!!:( He was adopted about 7.5 years ago from Mississauga Animal Control, he was approx. 4 years old at that time.
He was a large dog and was having major difficulties over the past few months with his hind quarters. He was unable to climb any stairs and spent most of his time in the basement with my girlfriends' Mom. It was sad to see and hear him crying because he wanted to be upstairs with us, we could not carry him each time he wanted to up here. The vet said that the problems were neurological in nature and there was nothing good that could be done for him. He spent very little time standing over the past while and right now I am missing him very much. Here is a pic of Comet taken a few years back when his quality of life was much better.
RIP Comet (5/23/07)

Ian,
It is terrible when we have to let someone go that we love so much. I have had to do it twice in the last 10 years. It broke my heart both times. Remember that you gave Comet the best there was for 7 plus years and he gave it back to you. No regrets from either side. It doesn't get much better than that.

Putting man's best friend to rest is just as hard as humans.
Our dog had to be put down (cancer that spread) and i cried for days.He wasn't just a dog to us - he was a member of the family just like anyone else.
He loved the lake (Muskoka) and would ride the jet ski's with us - the bow of the boat and even sit on the ski doo and ride the trails in winter. He was loved by everyone on the lake (he would swim to other docks to play with the kids - he loved kids!) and all the neighbours at the lake still talk about him and him antics - he is still missed very much & it's been 4 years.
My condolences to your family RIP Comet!:)

Hang in there, greywolf. :(
Even though it may not feel like it, you did the right thing for comet-- no animal should suffer, they don't deserve it. Losing a pet sure is like losing a family member, for obvious reasons. Please accept my condolances.

A beautiful dog indeed. I detect some border collie in that face I think. We had our dog "Niki" put down after 16 years of unconditional love. She was a great dog and I was the one who had to take her to the vet when she just could not walk anymore. I stayed in the room while he put her down and sat with her for a few minutes after all was said and done. I drove back to the office sobbing continually and it lasted for a few days. I would just start crying for no reason. Heck I never cried like that in 20 years!!! I feel your pain and the memories of a dog last forever. It took me 3 weeks and then I couldn't take it any longer and went to the animal control and found "TOBY" a german shepard border collie mix. This dog knew nothing from crapping in the house or chasing a ball. She has adapted well and we have had her now for 7 years. We still have Niki's ashes saved with an album of pics next to it on the mantle of the fireplace.

If someone hasn't had a dog then it can be really difficult for them to understand just how hard this time is. We adopted a GSD from a rescue centre back home in England and she was with us for 5 years before she got cancer at the end of last year. She was pts on December 1st and it was just devastating for all of us even though it was the right decision for her. She couldn't go for walks anymore, she was losing control of her bladder and she was in pain. We just had to make the decision for her, and not for us.
Sandy used to sleep on a sofa in the living room - just after she went I came downstairs one morning and found my daughter sleeping there, she missed the dog so much. We've since adopted 2 beautiful GSD/Lab crosses and they're fabulous dogs, but, without being overly sentimental, we'll not forget Sandy.

Thanks everyone for your comments, Comet was a super dog and I will miss him for a long time. He did live a good life with us and the last 7.5 years were a lot of fun seeing him each day. The house seems pretty empty without him and like the vet said " a house is just a place to stay dry when there is no animal at home".
caddishack, he had a lot of bordie collie in him but Comet was much larger than a normal border collie. Love the pic of your dog, very nice!!!!
Thanks again to everyone!!!

I am very sorry for your loss. I had to do the same thing 2 years back with my 15 year old golden lab SAMANTHA. She was the best, could not go anywhere without her at my feet. You had to watch if you turned around cause she was right there. Unfortunatly I had some help, this made my made for a long long time. SAM was laying in the front flower bed where she loved to be. Down the road a couple of german shepards broke through a screen door came down and attacked SAM. We did everthing to help but after it was all done she was a mess they broke her back and she could not walk. I carried her into the living room and called Peter the vet and a friend. there was nothing he could do for her but stop the bleeding. So we made her comfortable and both my kids who saw everthing and my wife slept on the living floor with SAM as a family noing this was her last night with us. Peter came back in the morning and put her to sleep, she is still her cause I barried her and then made her own flower bed where she loved to be. This was very hard to write with tears and anger. I still miss her but now we have a Simolian pure black and huge and yes his name is COMET.

It's a very sad day losing a family member. I've had to watch 2 family pets deteriorate like that. One was my German Shepherd that I raised from a puppy and trained. He was 8 when he was put to sleep from bone cancer. The other was a rescued Golden Retriever who made it to 13 before her organs just started to shut down. Both were very difficult to deal with, but I don't think I could have done it if I wasn't there when they went. I feel for you and your family Greywolf. RIP Comet.
