View Full Version : Safe to store clubs in trunk?

Just wondering what you guys think of keeping the bag in the the car trunk. I used to lug my bag into my room every day, but I find it more convinient to just clean them in the garage and leave them in the trunk so I can have a game anytime!

I'm just worried that they will get damaged from chatter or just from the weight of the top ones resting on the ones below. I've put a blanket underneath the part where the club faces are but I'm worried about bending too.

So are there any ways to store clubs in the trunk for extended periods of time safely? or should I just not keep them there at all.

Thanks
j

I kept my bag in the trunk last year. Actually I had no choice as I brought them to work where they sat in the trunk all day (Black car) and after work I'd go play a round or go to the range. One night after work I went to the range with a Cobra M speed driver that I had bought a couple of weeks prior. On one hit the head of my club came flying off and flew about 70 yards in to the range. I had to stop everyone from hitting so I could go retrieve it. I went to golf town for them to repair it. The guy said most likely the heat of the trunk in 33* weather melted the glue.
I now have an X460 (bore through shaft) that I don't think would be as vulnerable to the same problem but still I will probably bring my clubs in to the office on those wicked hot days. At home I never leave my clubs anywhere but either my bedroom or my computer room.

I have had an expensive set of clubs jacked from my trunk once before, so no I don't believe it is safe.

I never EVER leave my clubs in there anymore.

ah. My apologies.. I did search for "trunk" but didn't find anything (and still can't). Can someone link me? I'd like the read the thread

@guitarman - thanks for sharing that experience! That was enough for me to take them out immediately. Do you think a thermal bag would keep the heat out? If I really had to keep them there?

@ThirtyOne - what? stolen? someone probably followed you from the course :D or how'd they know they were in there. I know insurance would cover if the whole car was stolen, but I guess not if only the contents...

As long as the clubs were assembled professionly using the proper epoxy, the heat should not bother your clubs. If they do, that is an indication that the club assembly was not done properly or cheap 5-minute epoxy was used.

The contents of your vehicle is usually covered by your home insurance rather than your car insurance.

Thats the way it came from the factory. When golftown repaired it they used 24 hour epoxy. I never had another problem, but I never kept my clubs in the trunk in the heat again. Now that I have a van maybe it will be better.

For the past 6 years I have put my sticks in the car in the spring and rarely do they come out of the trunk until the end of the season. Mind you I have been driving hatchbacks during that time but it still gets warm inside those trunk spaces.
Never have I had a head come off or a grip slip.
As for theft, I do not worry about that. That is why I buy insurance.

Now that I have a van maybe it will be better. The shaft may not have been fully inserted into the head by the factory, or it may have come loose when the epoxy was drying. Or the shaft may have been cracked at the tip. Or the shaft plug may have been knocked out (you would probably hear a head rattle in this case).

There are many reasons why a head will come off a shaft - but of course neither the manufacturer nor their dealers want to admit that most of them involve poor workmanship. So they trot out the "excess heat in the trunk of your car" excuse in order to put the blame on YOU - and then fix the problem for free (I sure hope they didn't make you PAY for this repair).

As I only had the club for a couple of weeks Golftown did fix it for free. I did get the speech that it was the heat of the car though. I always assumed that it was bad for clubs.

There are a couple of guys at my course who leave their clubs in their cars and trucks and nothing has happened yet.

I wish someone would jack my sticks, I want new ones. :D :shhh:

My clubs almost never leave my car, you never know when you'll get an itch and have to go swing it out. I've never had a problem with heads coming loose or a grip slipping on me.

I never had any problems over the years with clubs in the trunk except once I had a pocket in my golf bag melt.

I take alot of care and cleaning of my clubs so I bring them in after every round. I usually like them where I can see them all the time, like in my bedroom.

I clean my clubs aswell after each round, I just don't see why they have to be carried all over the place when the car is good enough. As for having to see them all the time, not sure if I should say you either need another hobby or a woman:eek:

Thats true. I had an expensive digital camera and lenses stolen from my car at work. It had to be put through home insurance.

I also had my clubs stolen and wouldn't recommend anyone to leave them in their car. You don't know how sick to your stomach opening up your trunk and finking $2,500 worth of clubs gone. not to mention a $1,500 stereo

I prefer to bring them into the house, the only time they get to ride in the car is on the way to and from the course or range.

I rarely clean my clubs after a round. Simply because I clean them after every shot. There is no need to clean them at home except once a week when I do the grips.
As for bringing them into the bedroom. Pretty sure my wife would draw the line on that move.

How do you accomplish this? My towel is rarely ever wet enough to give it a good cleaning after each hit.:help:

I have one of those scrub bottles which work quite well... Basically, a scrub brush with a bottle attached to it which you can fill with water. Works like a charm and awesome for on the course cleaning...

I also clean after every shot. I have a bottle with a brush on the end of it that I picked up from GT. I also put a tiny bit of dish soap in it. I scrub my irons after every shot and then wipe with a dry towel. Its great as now I rarely have to wash my towel where as before I cleaned my irons with the bottle brush I had to wash my towel after every round. I also double check my clubs after every round and make sure they sparkle.

My clubs are in the trunk from the first round to the last round of the season and I have never had any problems. The shade of the trunk stays cooler than the inside of the car in direct sunlight. I don't think the temperature gets up too high.
