...is going poorly? Do you pick up and leave because your worried that you will ingrain something bad, do you try and figure it out and continue hitting balls to test your theories, something else?
I'm curious because I had a fantastic range session last week. Excellent distance and control on every iron shot (I was shocked to be honest). However, this morning I couldn't hit an iron if my life depended on it. I did stick it out though, going through all the basics, trying to figure out what was going wrong. By the last 10 balls in my 100 ball bucket, I was striking the ball better, but nothing like last week.

When im sucking i usually take a break and hit the putting green and work on my short game for a bit. Afterwards i return to the range and starting hitting balls away.

I get out my wedges and practice short chips or hit a few short irons.

If my irons/woods are poor, I'll work on pitching and chipping.

Seems to be the consensus here. I take a break, practice putting and chipping and then come back to irons or woods. I've found that I usually suck when I get a bit tight and am forcing the shot. Loosening up a bit works a bit so some stretches etc may be in order.

I have specific drill to use when this happens. THe long and short of the drill is it sets you back up in the correct position. LIR will know the drill as I "stole" it from an old Ken Venturi video. It is a drill you use with only your 5 iron and it sets you back up in the correct address position.
If that drill fails me I pack it in for the day, and try to forget about it. Usually the next practice session I'll start off with some nice smooth 100 yard wedge shots and take it from there. If the wedges are working then I'll move on to other clubs, if not I go back to my "setup" drill.

Not exactly what the pros would do, but I go grab a beer and relax on the patio for 20 minutes or so and then return a little looser and more relaxed. Happened this past saturday. My irons have been absolutely solid lately but suddenly at the range like an outbreak of Ebola I got hit with the shanks....
took time to relax have a drink etc. came back and was good to go...
Nothing scarier then getting the shanks.... makes me lose sleep for the next week....
