Hi,

thanks in advance for your answers/feedback. I've been an on & off golfer for the last 10 years and I think the only reason why I wouldn't score a game above 130 (which I have) on a regular basis is because I'm reasonably athletic. Having said that, I probably hit the range 3 - 4 times tops in a year. As for an actual course? Probably 2 - 3 times in a year, if I'm lucky. Last year (on my birthday) as an example, was the first time in about 2 years that I went golfing and I finally learned an important rule...just have fun. And that's exactly what I did, and managed to shoot a score of 100.

Now that you know my golfing abilities, here's the point of my story. I'm looking to buy a pair of golf shoes and I'm bidding on eBay for them. The pair of shoe's are called "Oakley Overdrives" which is apparently a laceless shoe. I have no idea if this is worth the buy.

My other inquiry was with regards to a driver. I've never owned one but have been using my Callaway Big Bertha War Bird 4+ with reasonable success for awhile. I was recommended to perhaps check into buying a Callaway R7.

Any feedback for a pair of shoes and driver for someone who doesn't golf that often? Thanks.

The R7 is a Taylor made. Callaway or taylormade are both good choices. Try before you buy. I tried the laceless shoes from Dryjoy and didn't like them. I would think its a personal preference.

Welcome to the site!!

In terms of the shoe, I have never tried this pair. However, in my opinion, I would never purchase a shoe without trying it out first. Moreover, if you have an issue with the shoe, where do you go for warranty? A perfect example is in this thread:

http://www.torontogolfnuts.com/showthread.php?t=17406

If he had purchased this online, he may have been SOL.

In terms of the driver, Taylormade makes the R7 and Callaway makes the Big Bertha, FT-5 and -i. I would suggest you go to Golftown and test every driver you might be interested in. Then, you may want to consider used versus new, checking the BST on this Board and potentially pick up a used one for a fraction of the cost new.

Dohboy/Guitarman: wow, thanks for the quick reply. Sorry about the error regarding the club (R7), like I said I'm a newbie! Anyhow, both replies were extremely helpful. Bottom line is that I should do my research before regretting it. I actually given a 'second chance offer' on ebay for the pair of shoes that I was bidding on, and it came out to be $40 CDN ($30 to ship) and the guy had a 100% rating and states that the Oakley shoes were 100% authentic. I'll do the research and try some items out before I actually buy them.

Ebay is the best way to go if you do your research ahead of time. I always make a trip out to Golftown, try out the drivers, try on some shoes, etc... decide on the ones I want and then hit it up on Ebay. Beware the shipping/duties/GST/customs fees though if they are coming from the States... too many people don't consider this and then end up paying more then the GT price...

Also, don't forget that there are LOTS of replica/fake clubs on ebay so buyer beware!

Dohboy's post was bang on. Don't ever buy shoes unless you have at least tried them on somewhere. If you want to get em on ebay once you know that's the pair you want fine. But also(and I can't believe I am the one saying this) if the local retailer you went to go check out the shoes has them for a slightly higher price then buy them there. It's awful nice to have a golf store around to go see and try items. If you don't support them then they may not be there next year.

That being said there's a point at which I will buy locally. I'm not gonna pay twice the ebay rate for an item just to support the local guy but if an item is maybe 10% more from the local guy then I'd probably buy it there.

As for a driver. TEST TEST TEST. It shouldn't be your most important club but I think it's fair to say that for most people it becomes their most important club because they overuse it. So make sure it works for you and make sure you are happy with it. Don't want to be eyeing a new driver next year cuz you skimped this year. That gets expensive.

The R7 is often posted on the TGN Buy/Sell/Trade area of the forum. So keep your eyes open.

I don't mean any disrespect, but why would you consider buying shoes from ebay???? THIS DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. would you buy a shirt or pants from ebay. How do you know if it'll fit or be comfortable?
