Don't laugh....but I played Tam on Sunday and it was awesome!! The greens were perfect in their consistency although slow. THe course is nice and green, and the practice green kicks the crap out of the small disease infected green at DV. Best of all......$47 for a weekend prime time green fee. Compared to $60 for DV, I'll be playing my city golf at the Tam this year. I'll go to DV during the week if I get a chance, but $60 for DV is simply not worth it.

At least last year when you put your name on the waiting list for DV you could at least putt until they called you. Now you can't even do that. Very disapointed at what has happened at Don Valley this year.:hush:

Why can't you go putt anymore while waiting?

THe practice green beside Yonge St started getting all patchy last year. Scott Myles (DV head pro) told me there was a disease in the root system and it was killing the green. They did not address it at the end of the season last year, and therefore there are areas on the green now that are essentially unusable.

Tam's putting green is perfect....although it is slow. I know Tam is not a top facility but for the value compared to DV it is a better deal, at least until DV addresses those issues.

I have not played DV yet this year, will probably play during the week in the 3rd week of June when I'm on holidays so I can get the weekday rate.

I'll spend $47 instead of $60 to play a course less challenging but in better condition.

I get everywhere by transit, so DV is still far better for me ... the extra 12 dollars to save an hour of travel is well worth it. But I do hope to spend some time at Tam O' Shanter.

I almost moved into one of the big condo towers by Tam last year ... but it's not a nice area and we decided to stay in the Y&E area.

As for the practice greens ... they're not great, but I've found them useable this year. I use the one closest to the clubhouse, because the one by Yonge Street tends to be crowded ... so I guess some people are using it!

The most problematic thing with DV for me is that if I want to book in advance ... even for a single ... I HAVE to book at least four days in advance in order to get a spot at a decent time. Tam O'Shanter isn't usually as much of a problem.

By the way, DV's greens are finally looking like greens again. (They were awful for most of May.)

How is Tam O'Shanter overall, this year? (Aside from the greens.) I know last year there were one or two fairways that were a little chewed up by tractor marks.

The fairways were good too.....that's what I was saying.....it's like a REAL golf course.

I absolutely LOVE Tam o'shanter. Their practice area is top notch, the course is in decent shape and it's a great place to play a walk-on round. I feel really comfortable when I tee it up at tam for some reason and I usually play my best there too.

My GPS receiver gets a stronger signal in that area anyway, so I'm eager to play Tam sometime soon. It's really not an area I want to be walking around after a twilight round with expensive golf clubs, but during the day it's relatively harmless. Of course, my mother-in-law lives in the area, so perhaps I'll want to lay low, anyway.

Good to hear the course is in good shape again. It's a course that doesn't get a lot of attention, but anytime you talk to someone who's played there, they say positive things.

Tamo is solid for a city course and great price$$$$... good variety of holes.. only one knock.. the par5's are crapola but i aint complaining

Jun 6, 2007, 12:11 PM
what did they do to them?

In a nutshell they joined the water from the 11th par 3 with the water from the 13th par 5. They built a rockbed that runs right through the middle of the 15 fairway (at around the 260-290 mark) and continues over to the 17th hole. However, on the 17th, the water is tunelled under the fairyway so the rockbed is only a factor if you miss the fairway. It's around 200 yards out on the 17th hole.
Hope that made sense.

I haven't played Tam in over 2years and about a year for DV. Might have to give Tam a go again for old time's sake.

TGN TAM OUTTING?

Peut-etre. After this week I've had I'm dying to relax next week/weekend. I might be playing deerhurst next weekend but I'd consider heading out to Tam if others were for certain.

10 is a good par 5....but the only 5 par I would consider good. The drive is tough....risk and reward with the trees on the left side. Hey it's a great chance for an EAGLE.

Tam is a budget/value city course catering to casual golfers. With all the low-handicap elitist golfers from here start starting to show interest, you are squeezing out the casual golfers . Before long, everyone will be complaining about the pace of play, conditioning, slow green speed, no GPS, second-grade food, and the clubhouse.:D

"Twilight round" at TamO. Forget about it, you will never get it in. First the pace is so slow. Second, they kick you off early...I meant very early before dark. I started my round there this past Wednesday around 3:30 pm and just made it.

That was a 5 1/2 hrs round...you think it is normal?

Golden Bear
Jun 8, 2007, 11:25 AM
Yikes, 5 1/2 ... that's not just slow, that's Don Valley slow. (And in fact, the longest DV round I played this year was faster than that. Okay, only about 15 minutes faster, but I move quickly.)

I haven't played Tam enough to know what their rounds normally are ... but 5 1/2 hours seems unusual.

Ya the only time you can really fit an after work round there is during the weekday at the end of june early july when the sun sets at like 930 or so.

k sweet, yah i'll u guys how long my round takes :)

bob_33
Jun 9, 2007, 10:36 PM
lol, it took me 5 hours, wat was odd was our group didn't really have to wait on any groups until after nine when the foursome in front of us left, then we were playing behind a twosome that were really slow, REALLY REALLY SLOW, yah so it took 5 hours to play, but wat was funny was if u have been there, u know the 18th tee, that is like right beside liek the 11th tee i belive, lol i was teeing up at the 11th if that is the 11th, and there was a group that just teed off the 18 and were like 5 steps away from the 18th tee,and their is a 4some behind them, a onesome walks behind the 4some, then as we finsih teeing off at the 11th, another 4some comes, and just when we are in the middle of fairway, we see anotehr group walk onto the 18th tee, in total there were like 4 groups clumped together:) lol

I played this track today, after not playing it for the last three years. I couldn't remember why I didn't play it more often until I was a few holes in. A bunch of the sand traps are weed infested, dirt filled, with gravel sprinked on them. All the traps were not raked and in not the greatest condition. Grass was too long and not well kept among other grounds issues. I cant believe they dont have a simple warm up area where you hit into a net like Scarlett Woods has as well. Of course it played slow as well and I got hit really hard with a stray ball which really sucked for the remaining holes. I'll never go back, even if it was free.:hush:

What I couldn't believe was how far off the yardages were off the tee. The first par 3 claimed to be 188 from the blues, but measured from the rear of the furthest tee box it's ~170. One of the early par 5s was about 40 yards shorter than claimed and led to a 150 yard second shot and an ugly birdie after missing the eagle. I was measuring everything with my new PinSeeker 1500 as I was waiting for every single shot anyway. The sprinkler head yardage is fairly accurate but I was almost shocked at how far off the posted yardages were. Definitely a tolerant course towards bad ettiquete and slow play too.
