View Full Version : Weir Unlikely To Play In The President's Club

Captain Gary Player addressed this topic in last weekend's press conference with Jack Nicklaus. Player acknowledged that Weir would be a logical sentimental pick because the event is in Canada this year. That said, Player clearly stated his Captain's picks will be made from those who give him the best chance of winning against the USA.
Ergo, Mikey better get some game before September.

I said this before but I feel if you have Weir on the team (playing good or not) it will help the international team. The crowd would be behind the team more. If you don't have Weir you will lose Canadians to the US team.

He needs to earn his way on, he needs to play more and better to accomplish that.

IMHO Mike Weir has been a very mediocre golfer who gets way too much press here just because he is Canadian. I don't think he is even the best golfer with Canadian citizenship anymore...

I would agree with that.

Weir who? He is likely going to miss cut again this week.

You can't hardly justify Mike on his recent work, but who else have we got?
Ames is in and justifiably so, and I think Player would be a fool not to include at least two Canadians. If I were a betting man I'd say Player will pick Mike, based on intangibles if nothing else. I know I would.
You never know; Mike might step up to the plate under those circumstances.

I think it would nice to see Mike out there either way, although I'd prefer if he earned his way on with some better play.
Who knows though? Maybe playing on that kind of stage would give him the jolt he needs to get his game back.

If there were not so many int'l players who are better, I would agree. Unless he rises like the fabled Phoenix, Weir is a dead man for this year.

Yes, Player did say no go for Weir based on sentiment alone. He also said that he believes Weir is swinging better of late and that there was a long way to go until the matches. He also stated that if any International player won a major, they would automatically be on the team. Hope Mike likes Oakmont!!
Player says he looks at the numbers almost daily and has a close eye on what Weir and Ames are doing.
Otherwise is was a pretty boring day on Monday at Royal Montreal. Too much rain kept Nicklaus and Player off the course. They were supposed to do a course tour and give their insight on the changes done by Rees Jones.
Lunch was good though...and the course was still dry enough to play for me!

I watched some of yesterdays round and after leaving an eagle putt some 8' short and then missing the birdie putt, Mike was so frustrated, the camera just caught him throwing his putter. The flatstick is letting him down but he's not hitting it tight to the pin to give him better chances of going low. Well lets see if his new instructor works out in the end. It did take Tiger a while to get used to his new swing after joining up with Haney.

Can you blame Player for not picking him? I wouldn't unless he can win a tournament between now and then I would say there is no chance of him playing in MTL.

Wie, uhmmm, sorry, Weir made the cut this week at Memphis.
Hope he plays well to move up the leaderboard and earn some points.
Oh, BTW, Wie also made (barely) the cut at LPGA.

How do you figure Ames is in? He is currently 15th in the points standings for the International Team. That is not in, that is outside looking in.
Here is the current list for the International Team (http://www.thegolfchannel.com/core.aspx?page=13201&select=34)
Both Ames and Weir have dropped in the points standings over the past week or so. Ames went from 13th to 15th and Mike went from 17th to 18th. Not a good way to impress Gary Player.

How do you figure Ames is in?
That is based entirely on the assumption that Player has to pick at least one Canadian, which of course he doesn't.

In the last few days, I saw an ad for P-Cup in the Star featuring the picture of Weir among others international stars.
I wonder if that has any significant meaning. :confused:
On another note, Weir played a prominent role in lobbying to have P-Cup to be held in Canada, I do think he deserves serious consideration by Gary Player.

Given that Player appointed two, relatively unknown at the time, South Africans when the event was held there he will be under enormous pressure to add Weir and in turn Ames to the team.

Weir simply doesn't deserve to be on the team.

While in some ways I agree with you that does not mean that I wont be disappointed if he is not. It will be a much more exciting tournament for Canadians if Weir and Ames are on the team. Let's hope they play themselves on the team in the next 6 weeks.

Agreed. personally, i would rather see Ames play just because. too bad Ames didn't have Weir's mental toughness or atleast the mental toughness he had whne he was overachieving. Ames would be tough to beat with that close to perfect swing of his.

Avid...fully agree with you...if he's not playing well, he doesn't deserve to be there.

I would agree with the opinions being posted. Weir not being there will not dappen the fans enthusiasm. I would also agree that Weir is an average at best player on the PGA tour. His run when he won the Masters was him playing over his head. He came crashing down when losing to VIjay that year at the Canadian Open and has been playing his "regular" game since.
He still may win again on the PGA tour, but let's not fool ourselves that he is what he is.

Mike Beam or Rich Weir ? Is there any difference ?

Give the guy a break.Weir has won more PGA events than 8 of the 12US members and more than 9 of the Int. members.He has a great record considering he's mediocre at best.Woosnam picked Monty and Westwood and they fell out of rankings and victories and look what happened.The best golfers don't always win team events since the US has the 1,2,3 players in the world and the US will always be a ME only team.:shhh:

Yep, a lot of PGA Tour wins, three Pres Cup appearances....
And I actually think Beam is a good player.

There used to be a big differnece but not as much currently.

It seems that if Mike Weir doesn't make every put he looks at, he ain't going to finish well in a tournament let alone win. Maybe it is fair to compare Weirs win at the Masters to Leonards win at the Open. They both made a lot of long putts. Of course players need to make alot of putts to win any tournament but say a guy like Kenny Perry can putt like crap and still make a cut and finish top 20 or better.

i think at this point i would be shocked to not have Weir on the team and even Ames as well. I know Weir is 18th in rankings, Ames is 15th, but look at the players ahead of them.
Badds has 2 wins;
Appleby has 8;
Allenby has 4;
Sterne has 0;
Pampling has 2;
Green has 0.
Weir has 7 wins including a major and Ames has 2 wins including a Players. I know these guys above are all good players and deserve a look as well, but the event is held in Canada, and that does hold some weight. Let's just hope that one of them makes it on merit, and the other gets a pick.

If Appelby didn't have that melt down a few weeks ago it would have been a no brainer. If Mikey has a good British and Canadian Open maybe he can "earn" his way on the team. Going with the home town favourite usually results in either a brilliant choice or a brutal choice, as the player either steps it up, or falls flat on his face. It will be interesting to see the final line up though.

This is Player's latest comment on Weir playing in the President's Cup. Sounds to me like Player is beginning to concede the fact that he has to select him.
“There’s nobody I want to see on that team more than Mike and I think his game is coming around,” Player said. “I thought he played very well (two weeks ago in Washington) and I was glad to see him get that round back to par yesterday. I really think he’s going to make it.”
Also note that Weir shot the lowest round at today's Open at -3. Let's hope that his new swing efforts are starting to pay off.

Weir just has to work on keeping it together for 4 rounds. Don't get me wrong, I'm not critcizing because I'm one of the biggest Weir supporters out there. His Sunday rounds have been less than steller for awhile so it will be a great stride for him if he keeps up the great play this weekend!
