Wow, I've golfed for almost 30 yrs and I can honestly say I had never experienced a "flyer" before.

You hear this term all the time on PGA tour telecasts but never had I blew one way over the green outta the rough. In fact normally, the rough grabs the club and the ball goes no where.

This year, the 3 times I've had the pleasure of playing :( .... I've experienced a vast number of flyers that just don't quit.

Now I'm not sure if it's the swing changes I'm working towards or WTF is going on but I was just wondering anyone else, or what percentage of guys have experienced flyers.

I don't feel like I get a lot of flyers but did get one on Monday.

Burlington G&C has really had their rough deep this year, most of the time is just hack it out....I was trying to hack out a low running 5 iron figuring on a 100 yard shot....ball came out like it had jets, went about 200 yards on the fly right into a pond.

Only once in a while, usually the rough cuts down my distance so I can live with a little extra once in a while.:)

this has happened to me when in rough grass approxamatly 3to 4 inches deep but not often.do you guys think it is the stroke or the depth of grass that makes it a flyer?or just great contact on the ball?

I have had this happen to me on occasion, but it's pretty rare.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but flyers come about because of a lack of spin playing out of the rough.

First time,a 5wood flew 210yds onto the green while they were putting.Got me all the proverbial gestures and WTF's! I'd intended to hack out for a close chip ,but it came out like a rocket. I never use more than an open six iron from any rough now.

Flyers happen when there is not alotof spin on a ball. alot of time out of the rough. High swing speeds can cause flyers that are more noticeable.

Even a slightly tiny bit fat iron from a shaggy fairway will produce flyers.

The new max COR drivers also can produce flyers. Vijay Singh has talked alot about this. He tees it up really high and tries to hit just above the sweet spot wiht the new drivers. Ball can go 20 yards farther depending on how far you hitit in the firast place and actually bore through the wind. This is according to Vijay and other pros. I experince my fair share of flyers.

more likely when it's not as HUMID, as the grass isn't as 'sticky'
...I've had a few myself 'early' this season...throws-off your club selection, and what YOU think is YOUR club for THAT yardage! :(
