I usually go to courses around the intersection of Hwy 7 and Lakeridge Rd. If I sneak out of work early, I can be at 401 & Port Union at 5 pm. I have tried to follow 401 out to Salem, but it is slow on the 401 and slow to get off. I don't use the most expensive toll road in North America. Any suggestions on how to get to golf from east TO?

I'd suggest either getting off the 401 at Brock Rd in Pickering, go north to Kingston Rd, east to Lakeridge then north.....or exit at Brock Rd in Pickering and go north all the way to Hwy 7, then east to Lakeridge Rd. Both about the same distance, just depends on the traffic at the time.

At 5pm it's bound to be messy no matter how you do it. From Port Union, you could try going east on KR/Hwy2, north on Altona, east on Taunton. You may know that Taunton is an extension of Steeles; anyway, it'll take you all the way to Lakeridge ... at what speed I don't know, but almost anything beats KR or 401.
Whites Rd goes up to Taunton also. I don't know how finished it is once you get north of KR.

I live in Pickering and agree there is no perfect option at that hour. The 401 sucks as soon as you pass Whites Road and Kingston is no picnic either.
The key to getting off at Whites is to stay in the fast land as long as possible - everyone moves in into the right lanes and things get all backed up - you're sitting there picking your nose in the right lane whilst people are bombing by you in the left. Stay in the left, and move over at the last second.
Best I can suggest is get off at Whites Road, and go straight up Whites to Taunton. Whites will be very slow as you get off the 401 but as soon as you pass KR, it will open up.
Taunton moves well, watch for radar - especially on the 2 lane sections as people tend to fly up there...easy pickin's for a below quota cop.
