Anyone know if there is a range at Granite Ridge. If not, is there one close by?

There is no driving range at Granite Ridge, but there is one just around the corner near the intersection of highway 25 and Campbellville Road. You'll have to drive right by it to get to the course. I usually grab a small bucket for $6 before my 6 hour round at Granite Ridge.

Please tell me you are exagerating. I have dinner plans in Markham and a 6 hour round would definately make me late. Is it a very slow course? Is 5 hours realistic for 4 decent players on a Saturday??

I wish you luck. The speed at which your group is playing won't have any relevance to the amount of time it takes to complete your round. I have golfed there twice on weekends this year and at least half a dozen last year and I have experienced many a 5 hr+ round.

Here's my most recent example. This past saturday I had a 2:16 tee time. When we checked in we were warned that the course was "a little busy". Got to the tee box on the Cobalt course to find three groups waiting to tee off ahead of us. We finally teed off at about 2:45. Once we got out there we had to wait about 5 minutes for every shot. When we got to the next tee box, the group ahead of us was waiting for the group on the fairway, who were waiting for the group on the green. This went on all day. The back 9 opened up a little bit, but we did end catching up to and waiting for the group ahead of us on the green on the 18th hole. We completed our round at 8:50.

I heard that they had a tournament on the Ruby course that got cancelled, yet for some reason half of the field showed up anyway and they were accommodated... Though I don't have any evidence, I have a suspicion that they sold the tee times for both courses and in order to accommodate the tournament, they bounced everyone onto the Cobalt course. Again, I don't have any proof of this, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is what happened. This whole experience has soured me on this course... I used to enjoy it and thought it was great value - $40 for a weekend round in the GTA is hard to find nowadays.

Oh, also prepare to be hit by stray golf balls... I don't think I've ever heard the word "FORE" yelled so many times in my life!

Marshall who must have driven past us a dozen times, never said a word to us...

My experience today was very similar to the one you described. I got there 30 min before teeoff and was told that there would be a 15 minute delay at the clubhouse. When I arrived at the first tee, there were 4 groups waiting and was told that there was a tournament and an additional (min) 1 hour wait before we could tee off. A guy in the group ahead of us got into it with a Marshall and then a heated argument ensued. It was a disaster to say the least. One of the guys in our group went back into the clubhouse to complain and to GR managment's credit, they got us on the backside of the Cobalt (we were booked for the Ruby course) with only a 10 min wait. The first nine was great as we played it in 2:20 min. The 2nd nine was a complete disaster as there was always 2 groups waiting at each tee which caused us to play the back nine in over 3 hours!!! Not to mention, I have never played a course with so many people who do not know how to yell "Fore". We were almost hit on 4 - 5 occasions. Based on my experience today, this has got to be one of the worse run courses in the GTA.

while you're waiting on the tee, all you wish you could do is play that pristine course next door which doesn't seem that busy. That course is Greystone...

Odd - I have played there twice this year, after hearing it recommended as good value, and both rounds were quick and very nice. Played Ruby in just under 3.5 hours on a Wednesday morning, and Cobalt in under 4 hours on Monday of the following week. And yes, I walk.

Maybe golfing on weekends isn't a viable strategy there, but during the week my experiences were great!
