I do not want to do another bash Kaneff golf thread... but I just wanted to share my Fathers Day experience..

Tee Off time 7:15 We arrive at about 10 to seven, put on the golf shoes check the bag.. Ok go into the proshop to pay and then may be a couple minutes on the putting green and couple more to loosen up. 7:00 we pay and the Proshop associate (No Thanks have a great round or ejoy your day) in a more "ive got more important things to do" voice tells us that we were on deck.. I check my watch itis just a couple minutes past seven I tell him that I thought we were at 7:15 ? he just tells me that we gotta keep things moving !!

Starter's Box The starter reminds us how busy they are today so he asks us to make sure we keep up a quick pace of play "or his boss is going to be upset" He then shows me the starting sheet "Holy Cr@p" I say there are enough groups to fill TWO days of rounds!!!I tell him they would not have this problem if they did not over book the course so badly!! He mentions that the Fairway bunkers ahead are 315-325 yards ahead and when the group ahead passes the bunkers it is time for us to tee off (I am already getting stressed out!!) Both my brother in law and I tee off.. both of us hit it 40+ yards past the bunkers NO WAY the bunkers are 315-325 yards away.. at most our drives were 290-300 yards.. If my dad did not tee off first we would have drove right into if not over the group ahead...

Second Tee.. We are already waiting (not long though) and the Marshall drives up and tells us that it is going to be a busy day and to keep up the pace... sheeesh!!! it is the second hole we have already been told how busy it is 3 times!! and to keep up the pace.. And we are a fast ready golf group.

Fourth Hole Marshall drives by again.. doesn't say anything but looking around I can see 2-3 golf carts with no bags mulling around the front nine!!

Fifth Hole A very loud machine fires up !! I recognize the sound.. my shoulders slump.. The aerater !!! They decide on Father's day, when the have over booked the course more than I have ever seen before in my life !! to aerate the fringe on the greens WTF???

Ninth hole As we make the turn we notice a crowd mulling around the practice green and the starters box.. They are now behind by over 40 minutes !!! there were alot of sour people!! We notice some people just get back into their cars and leave ... nice for Father's day!!

Heading to the tenth tee we notice that it is backed up by 3-4 groups??? (I think they started sending people off the back tees as well) So we roll by the halfway house to grab a snack.. while there we notice that people are also leaving there because they only have one poor girl working for both the clubhouse and the halfway house ( I cannot believe they are so short staffed I felt sooo sorry for the server.. she deserved better) So we grabbed a couple of gatorades at $3.50 a pop  and waited for the back nine.

The rest of the round was uneventful except the marshalls buzzing around like wasps and the aerater mulching up the fringes..

I thought the course it self was in pretty decent shape.. fairways were lush and the greens were very nice as well !!

I did expect that Father's day would be busy... but come on!!!! you cannot force that many people on one day I bet more people left never to return than people who enjoyed themselves that day .. We were lucky that we were there relatively early !!

Aerate the greens on a slow day not on one of the busiest days of the year!!!

Do not leave ONE poor server to deal with the halfway house and the club house... that is just mean!!!

I think I know WHERE the Marshall should have been!! ;)

p.s., you should send your comments to Kaneff Golf, I know there are a few TGN members who WORK for the company that monitor these things! ;)

Okay we know people love to bash Kaneff.... I'm off to Royal Ontario today and will report back. However anyone else play Sunday (anywhere) with similar or different results.

At least the course was good.

BTW, how long did the whole round take?

Played Bondhead on Sunday. The cost was $125 plus tax. It includes a Buffet Lunch (valued @$35.00 if you go for buffet only). The service was great as usual. Even though we were a threesome, never had to wait on any tee and never held up any group. The whole course (we played the south) never seem overly busy with groups waiting around on tee boxes. Had the use of the locker room for shower etc. The Buffet lunch was also good - either chicken or steak with a good selection of salads etc and desserts. Overall a very good day. Wondering what it cost at Century Pines. Just to emphasis how great the service was, when we booked, we did not know about the special. We got a call the next day to tell us about the special and also to take our booking for the lunch. They spaced them out 1 hour so that the service do not get overwhelmed. Because we teed off at 7.40am, we had a choice of 12.30pm or 1.30pm. They never rush you at bondhead.

Same stuff at Royal Ontario. I will never go back. It was so over booked we couldn't play the back nine and finish by dark teeing off at 3pm though are time was 2:40 there were delays. This was in late may.

We asked for a rain check and they said no just play the front nine again. I will never go back.

Bondhead does always have amazing service and, from my experiences, great food!

Never gone anywhere that does it up like Bondhead....though I like carrying my own bag from the car but they won't let me.

Century pines has a great deal $45 including cart I think. Problem is that these $50 courses are booked heavily and the $100+ have much less traffic and are weekday corporate courses.

Hmm  Maybe your day wasn't so good:-))) My family was very happy on Father's Day. We had two foursomes for 11:15 and 11:23 at Century Pines with our family. They were only 1 tee time behind as our second group tee off at 11:33 or so. The starter was telling jokes and looked very happy. We also got rushed a bit on the first tee but nothing major. The guys in front of us were playing the black tees...didn't even made the creek there. The starter was joking that half of the people today wanted to play from the tips but should really play the whites. Our first group played the whites and we played the blues but it looked like the white tees were way back than the last time when we played. There were a lot of groups on the tee and were waiting in front of us. But we got on the tee at 11...eager to play:-))) Finished at 4:45. Not too bad....little over 5h. My dad is an e-mail member of kaneff's courses and they offered us a pasta bar after the game. Very nice. There were 3 young guys behind us that were hitting probably good 300yrds. We let them go through because my dad and one of my sisters are slow golfers. One of the marshals thanked us and on the 9th hole we got 8 golf hats from the pro-shop. The guy said thank you for repairing ball marks and fixing divots. We didn't wait too long on for hotdogs and a beer. There were 2 girls. They had 2 pop cart girls as well so that helped. It was very hot. My dad gave up after the 13th and they offered him a complimentary newspaper and bottle of water at the clubhouse. I think he wanted to watch the US Open:-)))
Anyhow...overall we had very good time and the service was great. Don't know if they were overbooked, overcrowded or whatever....we had a great time for the money we paid.....Last year at Crosswinds we paid almost double on the same day and played in 6 and a half hours..
Just another opinion...

I am not sure, but it seems that on this past Sunday in the afternoons, there were a lot of open tee times at quite a few golf courses. Maybe the US Open being telecast have something to do with it. Having joined the ranks of public golf players this year, I find that on the weekends, you should either play early - before 7am if possible, otherwise play after 1pm. At most courses, between 1pm and 3pm (before twilight) you could fire a cannon through the place. I guess teeing off at 11am at Century Pines worked out really good and at 7.15am was right in the middle of prime time and heavily booked. Anyway $45.00 is a good deal and so everyone took advantage of it.

You're absolutely right. When we checked in at the proshop the guys told us that they are solid booked from 6 to 12:30 and then it's dead. We paid a bit more than $45...not sure why but still $10 off their regular price and with nice pasta bar. Wheh we finished the clubhouse was full with people watching Tiger trying to take over:rolleyes: Even solid booked for 6 hours I don't think this is overbooked course. It's one of the courses in GTA that has a good pace for 6600yrds. Maybe the best pace of play from all the Kaneff courses..... (haven't played only the legends at lionhead)

My last round there (shot 76;) ) we were backed up right from the get-go, and this was teeing off at 4:30 Sat. afternoon.
This was my only slow outing there as I try to play weekday twilight when I have found the course to be practically empty and you can easily fit in 18.

I played Osprey Hoot Sunday aft with my dad - No one around us, finished the front nine in an hour and a half. Caught up to a 4some on the back nine that seemed to be taking things a little too serious and didn't look interested in letting us through. Since we were not in a hurry, we just hung back and started playing a couple balls on each hole. The back nine took 2 1/2 hours - so 4 total. Worth the drive to Alton if you ask me.

...it's the ONLY Kaneff course I still like (though I don't dislike Royal Niagara...yet!?) ;)

With these types of posts its always good to get both sides of the story. I contacted Century Pines with that concern and the fact that if this type of thing goes on I may not be inclined to play there. Below is the response I got verbatim.

Hello Mr. Fraser,

I am sorry that you feel that way just by reading the opinion of one customer. Usually I don't comment on threads posted on websites. Nevertheless since you had the time to write to me about the review I'll answer to you personally. I don't know if you want from me the facts of what was going on during Father's Day or you just wrote to me to tell me that you're not playing Century Pines anymore. I'll take the liberty to give you the authentic story of the day. Not that I need to prove anything to you but we strive for excellent service everyday and I want you to come and try the course for yourself. Please don't make decisions based on one customer's opinion.

Let me start by telling you that the review is somewhat exaggerated. We weren't overbooked at all as we had only 200 golfers that day spread out from 6:45am to 5pm. We tee off a foursome every 8 and 7 minutes. Over 11 hours of tee times and 200 people playing the course is anything but overbooked.
There was no single customer leaving the course that morning as it's stated in the review. It is likely that the people which the gentleman saw leaving the parking lot were walk on players who we cannot accommodate. Because we knew it was going to be busy we asked people on the phone when they booked to come early rather than being late. That's why we had a few groups on the tee at all times. We also gave free driving range tokens to more than 80 people as a Father's day gesture. We had complimentary newspapers for our customers as well as complimentary pasta bar for Father's Day. Everyone that had the chance to try it was very happy. It was open from 11am to 7pm. On June 17th we had 2 girls at the halfway house and 2 pop cart girls for the whole day. Again the statement on the website is not true. Maybe one of the girls was re-stocking or doing something else but there was no line up at any time at the half way house.
Another problem for the customer that wrote the review was the aeration of greens. Only 15 yards from the fringe on hole # 5 were aerated that morning due to a spill of some kind of liquid. The damage was done overnight so we had to act quickly before the Sun gets to the grass. No other holes were aerated. I think there is a bit of exaggeration in the statement again.

The next thing in the review is the "3-4 groups backed up on the 10th" ?!? On a day like this it's impossible to start people off the back nine. They wouldn't be able to play the front so the statement itself doesn't deserve a comment. With the first tee time being 6:45am and 2 of the groups being members there is no possible way of people waiting on the 10th. The pace of play for people started at 12pm was 5 hours and 10 min. Decent time considering the amount of people on the course, a lot of senior people brought by their children and grandchildren, and the very hot day.
The complaining customer is saying that groups were backed up but somehow we were only 20 minutes behind at 12:30pm. His statement is only presumable but I have the log- book to prove it. We set the golf course that way to have the par 5's very long. This is because we didn't want people to wait on their second shot. The first hole was set at 280-300yrds to bunker shot. I can't comment on the customer's ability to hit that yardage. A lot of people can do that.
The only thing that I can see happening is the "rush" on the first tee. Our Sunday marshal is a fine 70+ years old man loaded with a lot of jokes. He's very good and we get nothing but good words about him. As it happens very often the golfers on our first tee are waiting too long before they hit. It's a par 5 hole and the distance is deceiving. That's why sometimes our starters are trying to urge people to hit because of the distance. I've never heard of someone being hit as very often the long hitters go on the road, wrong fairway or in the creek.

I don't want to get you bored with "statistics" so all I can say is that day we had nothing but compliments from our patrons. There were 30+ customers staying and watching the US Open and all of them looked very happy and pleased.
I urge you to come and try the course for yourself and please see me afterwards if you have any questions or concerns. I'm usually at the club from early morning to late night.
Thanks again for your letter and have a great week!

I did not have the "statistics" I just overheard someone telling a customer in the proshop that they were running almost 40 minutes behind.. I did not make up this number it is what I overheard (none of my business but I did)
There was only 1 girl working at the Halfway house .. May be another started later.. Like I said we tee'd off early. My disatisfaction was for her not me.. I have worked in the service industry and I know what it is like to be left in the "weeds" Also she apologized to me for taking so long because she was on the only one on. I said not to worry since there was a back up on the tenth tee anyway.
There were 3-4 groups ahead of us on the 10th I only surmised that they let a few people off on the back nine. Only because we were not backlogged that bad before... could have been the 1 poor girl working the halfway house
I witnessed at least 3 greens being aerated.. and I heard the machine beyond those holes. Also I am sure that this decision could have been made before 9-9:30 in the day.. My point to do this during a busy and significant day (father's day) seems ill timed and if it was just one hole like Mr. Krastev states.. why would they not just do that before people started teeing off???
Finally I would agree that the starter is a very likeable fellow but to tell us to tee off when the group ahead just passes the bunkers (at what Mr. Krastev says is 280-300 more realistic than the 315-325) is still a little dangerous.. also sending off groups 300 yards apart is going to jam up a course no matter how fast the golfers play!!!
I will concede That I was still a little raw when I posted this initial review Like I mentioned the course was in great shape I really like what Kaneff has done to Century Pines.. and I will go back on a less busy day to give it a fair shake.. I had nothing but compassion for the Halfway house associate.. she busted her hump and I hope others were as patient as we were.

I would not want other TGN'ers to not try this course because I think it is a pretty decent course for the $$

Also for Mr. Krastev, I would suggest he let the starter (Who I agree has a very affable personality) teach his Pro Shop staff a few jokes;)

After reading both sides, and this follow up, I have a tendency to believe JEBS, especially if you read his rebuttal. He didn't totally trash the course, or ask anyone to avoid the place, felt for the girl at the halfway hut, agreed the starter is a nice old guy, and even admitted to being a little angry when originally posting. Still, his facts remain consistent. Even on one of the busiest holidays, I would consider a 5 hour and 10 min. round too long. THe course staff is not managing the course as well as it should. I have only played one Kaneff course, Royal Niagara, and while the time and pace were no issue, I heard several complaints about the quality of the course, particularly the rough. This was a couple of years ago so I can't comment on how things are there now. Noone in my foursome expressed any desire to return after that day.

I played Centruy Pines on the holiday Monday really early and everyone was pretty courteous. They did charge me to have my son and nephew ride with us (they're 9 years old and we are trying to expose them to this great game) which I thought was a little strange - and I am a member of Kaneff Golf to boot.

Regardless, the pace of play was fine and the greens were in awesome shape.

I can't knock it for a public course and the people that work there are getting their corporate instructions from head office obviously. If you have a complaint, simply write to head office. If you don't give them the feedback, not returning to the course won't help much because there are so many golfers in the GTA and others will simply take your place. Be heard!

ABSOLUTELY... I know for a fact that there people from the Kaneff group that monitor these threads. ;)

Even on one of the busiest holidays, I would consider a 5 hour and 10 min. round too long.

LOL :D Too long?!?! Are you playing at 5:30am in the morning or you play empty courses? :)

We play about 25 to 40 rounds a year....starting normally between 10:30am and 12pm...let me tell you...I don't remember a round less than 4:45min on a busy day...and we play about 20 courses...too bad we're not an early birds I guess.;);) My worst round...Cedar Brae....almost 7h

Fiji -a seven hour round? In seven hours you could have had like seven meals at the keg. You could have flown to the Bahamas and back and back to the Bahamas again. Hey, you could have been halfway to Fiji. Wouldn't that be like watching 3 Blue Jays games in a row? Even Viagra only warns about a six hour erection.

Are you sure Cedar Brae is not a cemetary? Who were you playing behind at Cedar Brae Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder (sorry about the blind joke)?
