I haven't played this course in over 20 years when I was a junior. If memory serves it was nicely manicured but had white quartzite bunkers that were like quicksand as soon as you stepped into them (also my only complaint about North Granite Ridge in Muskokas, THE best course for dollar there...)
Anyways I am going up to Southampton in 2 weeks and was wondering if anybody has played the course lately. Was it in good shape? Was it good value (<$60)?
Thanks!

Hi: I've been a member at Saugeen for 10 years now and the course is still very nice but different from 20 years ago. In 1995 they opened another nine that is very different than the original 18. Lots of mounding and water on 6 holes, environmental area(think Guelph Lakes, it was designed by the same guy). The clubhouse and pro shop however will look very familiar as they are still working on the 1960's look in there.
I played all 27 holes last night and the course is in good, not great shape, the bunkers are actually quite poor right now(hard as opposed to fluffy) and some brown spots like most courses, but very playable and http://www.golfsaugeen.com/page/399-20267.htm
that is the green fee schedule.
I would still highly recommend the course as the place to play within 50 miles, although I have not played Cobble Beach yet. Even so the green fees are not even in the same league.

We have a cottage in Southampton and Saugeen is defintely our first choice as well.... we tend to play at the twilight rate and have little to no problem getting done.
The new 9 is excellent - my favourite by far. Can't comment on conditions as we haven't played yet this year - not until first week of July!
A couple people have told me Piper's Glen (in Port Elgin - on the same road as Tim Hortons out past the high school) is getting much better condition-wise... perhaps worth a look as well.

Thanks for the responses.
It's probably too far out of the way but I heard that Owen Sound G&CC is a public course that happens to have been designed by Stanley Thompson...

Any chance you're looking for a 'Guest' for the Member/Guest on the 13th ?

A nice course if you hit it straight, but be ready to lose a lot of balls if you spray it. The fescue is very unforgiving.

Owen Sound is about a 1/2 hour from Southampton if that is were you are going to be. It was indeed designed by Thompson as was Saugeen. I find it a little repetitive after a while. Lots of holes with the 2 bunkers in front that look about the same, but a nice track.

Played saugeen last year, it was ok but the layout wasnt that great. The Owen Sound GC is a much better course has a great layout and some nice views on the front nice. Cobble Beach is really nice but its more money.
