Hi everyone,

I would like to take same beginner lessons at a driving range around Toronto. Please, could somebody give me few suggestions but keeping in mind an affordable price?
Thank you very much for your help.

I'll tell you where not to go - the Woodbine driving range. On most days the parking lot is jammed packed. the mats usually have people waiting in line, and the grass is in the most terrible conditions. i.e. you would be hitting out of dirt, like wasteland style range.

I don't know what part of town you're interested in, but in the Markham area there are several that are reasonably priced.
The range that I use (I don't work there, but John allows me to use the range to teach) is Fairtree on Kennedy Rd across the road from Angus Glen's range. Very good range with grass and mats, and 2 very nice greens for putting and chipping, and kept in very good condition, and John's prices for lessons and range balls are very competitive.
The Range on 16th Ave (actually the name of the place!) is also pretty good (both grass and mats) and the prices are reasonable. But it can get pretty crowded in the afternoons.
I'm not familiar with the prices at the Golf Dome near the 407 and Woodbine, but the range itself is also good (both grass and mats).
If you let everyone know what part of the GTA you're in, I'm sure you'll get a lot of suggestions.

Hey GolfLady,

I would try to look into Scarborough Golf Range in Markham. The teaching pro there is Gary Kent. I'm currently taking lesson with him and he's a very nice and understanding gentleman. You can go to his web-site www.garykentgolf.com (http://www.garykentgolf.com) to check out his prices.

Hope that helps you out..

i visited this range for the first time on sunday after father's day dinner. nice range. $11 for a basket of about 70 balls. very nice putting and chipping greens. huge!

haven't been there ... but there's one a few streets further south that i go to more often..

My first choice to say is Fairtree, when I first came onto the forum Goshawk told me about Fairtree and he's right on, it's clean, grass is great, good mats if you like mats, and the balls are new, and for $11.00 for a large basket is a deal!!. Markham is too much $$$, I believe it's $16.00 for a large and the grass is not great, mats okay but looks busy all the time, another good range but a little hike is bathurst glen past elgin mills on bathurst, great pro, Doug Warner!!!, and new balls that are $13.00 a basket, you might want to give goshawk a shout, Tom.

If you could (and I know it's convenient for most) I'd avoid the Markham golf dome. Buckets are pricey and the grass is really poor condition. The grass is like hitting off hardpan. Really.

Their mats are okay I guess. And they do have a decent putting green. But if you're looking for a place to hit off grass, there's better value to be had.

I second that!! The grass there is absolutely horrible!! It's all chunked out so you have patches of dirt and grass and no really good place to put your ball! You sometimes don't even have a secure footing because the ground is so chuncky!!

$11.00 to $16.00 for a basket of about 70 balls? Ouch. My area there is good driving ranges where a large is about $8.00

good pricey range is Buttonville Fairways on Major Mack just a few meteres east of McCowan Rod..... large chipping & putting greens that are pretty well-kept.

You call that decent? My mom has a shag carpet from the 70's that is better for putting. Honestly, I don't even bother using the putting green there.

I haven't been to Richmond Hill (Bathurst/Hwy7) golf course in a few years but back when I did live in that side of town, I practiced there because they have a range (so-so) but their putting green was spectacular. I assume it's so nice because it's an actual golf course and not just a range.

If you don't mind mats, consider the Launch Golf Center at Steeles and Hwy 400. Their summer rates are reasonable ($22 to 24 for two hours in the morning) and the place is pretty quiet. They have people that teach there during the week including a female professional.

Buttonville is $15 for large which isn't cheap compared to other places, and the ground is like hitting of a board, no give, nice pro, great chipping and putting green but better value at somewhere like fairtree where a large is $11 for 95 balls that are new, or even at Richmond hill golf club, nice matts and great putting area, which is where Wayland was referring to.

Try the Richmond Hill GC. $11 buckets and fairly good instruction for beginners. Shawn Clement is the Director of instruction and he is very knowledgable and a good communicator.

The Little Pro - Mississauga Rd and Highway 7 - west side of Brampton is very nice and many women go there for lessons/practice.

How busy are they? Their website states they only have 20 hitting stations.

Busy but never so busy that there are three people lined up per station. Keep in mind also that a bucket = 64 balls. If you want a lesson, call ahead and they should be able to accomodate you with a week notice.

Could you let me know where specifically each of these ranges are. I'm looking to change ranges.

Fairtree is on Kennedy Rd, almost 1km north of Major Mac. A good 3-wood north of Angus Glen's range, on the opposite side of the road.

$11.00 to $16.00 for a basket of about 70 balls? Ouch. My area there is good driving ranges where a large is about $8.00

Fairtree charges $11 for a large bucket (96 balls). John's prices haven't changed since he moved his range there from Markham Rd and Denison a couple of years ago.
