I went to the range last night, and the guy to my right (behind be since I golf left handed) was taking some serious divots. So serious, in fact, that every time he hit the ball, I was getting a small spray of dirt to the face. I didn't say anything, but I wondered, is there any range etiquette for this?

I wouldn't think so. He is probably a hacker and just working on his game like everyone else. I'd just move to another spot.

There were no other spots free, unfortunately, otherwise, I would have.

I can stand those people but what I can't stand is a bunch of kids doing imitation of happy gilmore. I saw one breaking driver's head off the shaft doing it. I hope the warranty does not cover it.:nono:

I one thing I dislike and had to move away, is when someone aimed at a pin that is so far to the right, if they ever shanked it.... someone could be seriously hurt....
Most people shot at pins that are safe, and do NOT have such a severe angle to the driving range line.
Even if he was a real shooter, why make everyone else concerned about his line and shot....:nono:

I don't think there is any formal etiquette too different than a round on the course. You still need to be quiet and curtious. The golfer who kept spraying you with grass should have realized that and apologized, but in that case, I would have moved to another mat too since there's really nothing he can do about it.
I hate it when I'm at a range and the guy next to me is talking so loudly on his cell. I also hate it when there's kids there fooling around. I'm just waiting one day when one walks behind me and *WHACK*...:hush:

I can't stand this either, but it's one of those things that you've just got to try to block out, I guess. I usually try and hit the range around the dinner hour during, so it's a bit less busy, but I don't always get there when I want to.

i hate it when people leave their balls and clubs at a spot to "reserve" it while they chat it up with someone else... 5 minutes, fine. but i've seen spots left empty for a 1/2 hour or more...

As Thimble mentioned it is quite possible that he did not know he was spraying you....
I would have mentioned it and maybe suggested taking alternate shots?
That or start swinging into the dirt and send some back the other way... :D

I've been to the driving range where people stand at such an angle beside you it looks like you're going to get hit.
A couple of weeks ago I was at the driving range and a woman was standing behind me chatting away at the top of her lungs. This usually doesn't bother me, but for some unknown reason she kept giving me dirty looks. (I don't know what she was saying because she wasn't speaking english...). I was getting mad (why I don't know...) and took a powerful swing with my 7 iron and took a huge divot (didn't mean too...). the wind was blowing into my face and the dirt went flying back, I turned around so as not to get it into my face but she didn't so the dirt hit her and I heard her spitting it out of her mouth.
She had a few other remarks (still have no idea what she said...) but at least she moved........ oh and I did apologize.....

I was at a range slightly north of Toronto (don't remember thae name)... and there were more "reserved" spots than there were people in them. Me and my friends finally having gotten tired of waiting decided to move into the spots, as there wasn't anyone answering to our calls of "EXCUSE ME, IF YOU ARE RESERVING HERE I'M MOVING YOU!"... so we did move the stuff and we started with our swings. About 20 minutes later, a group of men come running up huffing and puffing, and all red in the face... turns out they were all drunk. HAHAHAHA... we (my friends and I) couldn't stop laughing. They didn't even put up a fight, just grabbed their stuff (left the half full ball buckets to us!!) and left!

actually, sounds like the other side of tjhayko story :D ... not that I'm saying you were always making divots...

Me too especially since I got "shanked" yesterday. I don't know what the guy to my left was thinking. He turned right to aim at a yardage sign. But this guy was shanking like mad. I was setting myself up and every so often I'd see a ball go left to right about 20ft in front of me. Very distracting and a little scary.
Sure enough, he got a reall bad hit and it nailed me in the foot. Didn't hurt too bad (he had no power) but I was a little pissed. So I turn to the guy and politely asked him to be careful and try to aim a more to the left at the other yardage signs until he's solved his case of the shanks. He asked me: "What's a shank?". Hmmmm.... ok, I thought I was the noob here.
