Interestingly, The Open had actually fallen out of favour among players touring over here, and was hardly considered a "major" until Arnie and his boys decided it should be part of the modern configuration of professional golf Majors. It's hard to imagine there was a time when North American players weren't keen on playing there.
For me, my favourite will always be the Masters, but the Open is my second favourite. And I have no gripe with anyone considering the Open #1.

I think most people excluding Americans would consider it #1

The Open Championship is the oldest Major. IMO it is the #1 Major, due in part by how golfers can qualify. Plus the simple fact it is contested on some of the greatest courses in the world.

You won't hear any arguements from me against the Open being the number 1 major.
I just wish the RCGA would take a cue from the R&A and pick some worthy courses for our national open. Angus Glen is a travesty, and should not even be considered for the open rotation.
Hamilton, Shaugnessy, Westmount, St. George's... all superior tracks that could handle the volume of spectators.

totally agree, its my favourite major to watch by far, just for the fact that the scores could be low like the Masters, or they could be high like the US Open, sometimes solely based on the weather, without having the course change at all!
If there is one major i could play in, it would likely be the Masters just for the course, but if i could choose a tourney to play routinely, it would be the British i love that kinda golf where you really have to control your ball.

The British Open is THE Open Championship!!
I have been watching alot of the European tour latley and I wish that the PGA players would play more over there or at least hold a couple PGA tournies over there.. There are jsut too many spectacular courses not to.
Alas with the FED EX cup and the European players attracted to the fat american purses (rightly so) I feel that the european tour will fade into a feeder tour (if not already) like the Nationwide...sigh

its #1,#2#3 and #4. nothing against the PGA or the Masters (i was there), but to me, this is the most democratic type of golf anywhere.

As a couple of people have pointed out it is "The Open Championship", not the British Open and yes it is definitely the #1 major in golf because
a) it is the oldest
b) it is the only one that has gone out of it's way to offer qualifying opportunities to ALL golfers globally

Must agree, The Open Championship is by far the #1 major, followed by the Masters, in my opinion. Should be wicked this year at Car-nasty....:p

People's perception of golf vary so much.I watched the Open hilights from Hoylake and wondered how Major championships can be won without using a driver. No disrespect to the Open championship but obsure winners are common at the Open, such as Lawrie,Hamilton,Curtis. etc. Most people on this board complain about brown dried out courses but hold some Open courses in high regard.Whenever weather can play such an important factor in Championship golf, luck and rub of the green become more important than skill.I've watched Seve win from a parking lot to Van deVelde making 7 to lose to make me feel this major lacks something.JMHO:hush:

I love it. I love the Masters as well, but the "Open" is definitely the most interesting major to watch because the courses and conditions are so different from what the PGA players play the rest of the year.
When else do you get to see PGA pros hitting backwards out of a bunker? :D

but obsure winners are common at the Open, such as Lawrie,Hamilton,Curtis. etc.
Ben Curtis (ahead of his 30th birthday in May this year) had more wins (3) of any US player under 30. He may have been "obscure" when he won The Open but he has more than proven his ability since then.

I'm heading "home" to have a couple of days at Carnoustie - I think it will be my 13th Open - the first being at Muirfield in 1972!
