View Full Version : Those pesky neighbor kids

Anyone ever live next door to kids you don't like but for some Murphy's Law type reason, your kids do like 'em? :help:

I've got these pesky neighbor kids right next to us and they're quite a bit older than my oldest (my son, the oldest here, is 6 and my daughter is 3 .. going on 18). Kids next door are prob 8 & 10. These underachieving run amuks are always in my garage every time I open the door, even when my kids aren't around. They wander in wanting to play with the toys inside without a word to the parent. :nono:
I wonder what these kids could want with my 6 yr old. When I was 8 I played with older kids, not younger ones. I don't trust them as far as I'd like to throw them. :hush:
The parents are deadbeats too. They still owe me $500 for half the one side of the dividing fence from 4 years ago. As if I'm ever gonna see that.

Is there an easy answer to make my kids less interested in these brats?

Is there an easy answer to make my kids less interested in these brats? Tell them you WANT them to play with the neighbour kids. Worked for me when mine were still at home, whatever I told them they did the opposite :D

You really ought to forgive a debt such as that. It does nothing but create resentment.

As for the kids, what happens when you engage them? I'm assuming the parents are uninterested in hearing anything from anybody, correct?

I would have less trouble with the fence debt if every year they didn't get something new. Garage door opener, Weber BBQ etc. without offering a dime. Plus every year they get a quote to finish the fence off.
Needless to say, any fence they get will NOT be attatched to mine without payment.

The only engaging of their kids by me has been to tell them not to be in my garage without MY permission, which of coarse will never be granted.

Plus we have a heated inground pool so every neighbor kid wants to be here anyway.

Being a parent of young kids is harder than I thought. Not only do you have to be your kids parent, but also the kids who live close by. :( :help:

It takes a village to raise a child. The best way to engage and raise kids is with language. Taking the time to talk to them and engage them can (sometimes) have a considerable impact on a child's development.

Thanks bud. I'll try to be more patient. Maybe I'm just not liking the kids cause the parents are deadbeats.
I've got a lot to learn about being a parent.
Theres nothing that prepares you for this and I didn't even have siblings to help me adjust to sharing my time, knowledge and toys.

GRT, sorry, but I find this thread so amusing. You get riled up so easily.:p

I'd probably do what Overflow said too and try to engage these kids, but what do I know, I still feel like a kid sometimes too :)

I'm kidda chuckling at this thread... Hey, at least they like you Man... and they (hopefully) haven't stolen anything... I bet you, when they grow up, they may even respect you, if your nice to them... Things could be alot worse...

If I were you, I'd concentrate more on those 300 yd, 3 wd pokes - that you can bend on a dime... .

If they are "underachievers" like you say with "deadbeat" parents, it's better for YOU if you are liked. Two young boys can do an awful lot of damage if they think you're a mean neighbour. You haven't really mentioned any bad behaviour on their part towards you. Get 'em pissed off and you might find your golf clubs hanging from a tree. Just a thought.

Screw that. $500 is $500. Forgiveness doesn't pay the bills in my books. Walk into the guys garage and take something worth $500. A buddy of mine was in the exact same fence situation as you are. After waiting a couple of years for payment, one day he asked to borrow the guy's brand new $700 Toro lawnmower. He then brought it down to his basement and held onto it until his ***-in-debt neighbor came asking for it. When he did he was reminded of the $500 and told he'd only get the mower when the money was paid in full. The neighbor told him he was going to call the cops...obviously he never did because the cops would've laughed at him when they got the real story. That was two years ago and I bought the mower off him for $400 and a round of golf. At least he got something out of it so he's happy. Payback's a b*tch.

I agree. $500 is $500.

There is municipal law called Line Fences Act. I heard this from our contractor that did our fences. I think how it works is you first report to your municipal gov that your neighbor is not paying then the municipal gov pays you and they collect money from your neighbor in forms of municipal taxes. I am not exactly sure about the procedure because we didn't have to go through it. Maybe reminding your neighbor about the law would make them pay you.

The worst thing is that I don't WANT to be a pr#ck but I DO want my damn money.
I work hard like most of you and $500 is half a weeks pay.
It wouldn't bother me so much if the guy didn't always seem to have something new worth more than the money he owes me.

I'd say $500 is a lot to forget too. Have you tried reminding him?

Impossible situation, I'm afraid. If you mention it, you are automatically a jerk, if you don't, you'll probably never see your money. Life would be easier if everybody just did what they were supposed to.

GRT, just wondered why did you offer to pay out the money first? Didn't you suspect that they were deadbeats from the begining?

Why would he be a jerk if he mentioned it? It's his money, he can remind him nicely. Say he's waiting on the money to do .;.. something...

He's not really a jerk, but it will get taken that way if he says anything.

SWEET!

This forum is like a magic lamp. Rub the lamp three times (complain like crazy) and your wish will be granted.

Five minutes ago the neighbor actually came over with the money after four years of not paying me.

BTW , I know he's not on here cause he's a soccer player.

Rumor has it that my left handed buddies and I came over with some hockeys sticks in hand... Afterwards he had no choice but to reconsider. I suppose we just had to stop your whining...  . I'm glad it all worked out.

I'll take the lottery win and join BIGWIN instead. And of coarse, move to Muskoka.
