ok i think most of us are looking forward to the open now-well i certainly am :)
But just who do you think will win it?
Sure Tiger has every chance-but not many players have won it 3 times in a row and i personally dont fancy him to do it either!
IMO its gonna be a european but there are several strong candidates;
Padraig Harrington is a good scrambler ( thats always handy at the open)
Monty has just won this weekend ( although a little luckily) and he knows the course!
Garcia would be a superstar if only he could putt!
Donald is a straight hitter! thats a good thing for carnoustie especially if it turns to carnasty again :p
Justin rose also seems to be returning to some form of late!
my outsider? Lee Westwood is playing well right now hits the ball straight and long! not the best scrambler but if he hits the fairways he will give ya a run for your money!
sure Tiger and Co will be close up for sure and there are a few aussies who will fancy their chances but for me it will be a British winner at last HURRAH:hush:

On the US side of things I like Furyk. He has the game and mental demeanour to do it. On the European side there are a lot guys who could do it. I agree with your choices above, and if a veteran like a montgomerie is in there Sunday, you've gotta like his chances. Justin Rose is another good pick. I'd like to say Adam Scott, but his ball flight isn't suited to a course that could have intense wind. The weather will have a lot to do with it. If it is calm pretty much anyone could do it, if it blows it will take 60-70% of the field out of contention...IMO.

Europians like winning majors as much as the US like winning the Ryder cup:rolleyes: I think someone from the rest of the world will win like Sabbatini or Singh.

Tiger's 2 iron will be hard to beat at the open, he's just a different guy at the major's.

You still have to give Tiger the edge-but I like Paul Casey or Justin Rose to maybe pull it off.

"Stacking up those wins"?????
57 wins, including 12 majors - you're right he really needs to win more often

Tiger might be gunning for the 'Almost Slam' by finishing second in all 4 majors.

i think Apples is playing really well, other than the Sunday deamons he has to deal with. He has played super for the first 3 rounds of the US Open and Masters, along with last week as well. He has the game for an Open, if he can just get rid of whatever is happening on Sunday

I'm not a fan of Harrington, who can golf with their tongue sticking out? However I think he's got a very good shot, as well as Luke Donald.

We have our Open the week after the British Open. Who will win our open?
I find the British Open a bit of a crapshoot, hence they occasional produce ver unexpected (some would argue undeserving) winners.
The Masters has a limited field and thus they can manufacture (i.e. eliminate no names) better known winner.
As for the US Open, the treacherous set up pretty much eliminate the possibility of inexperience (read lesser known) players.

The open has lucky winners but the U.S open eliminates lucky winners?
Bellyhungry have you gone completely insane?
in the last 6 years of THE OPEN Tiger has won 3 and Ernie Els 1 ( hardly unknown lucky winners?)
the last 6 years of the U.S open have been 6 different winners and the last 3 were Cabrera Ogilvy and Campbell ?????? ( all 1st time and probably only ever time major winners-now thats what i call relatively unknown lucky winners)
There is nothing lucky about winning the open...the best golfer at the course will win...open courses are challenging but fair the U.S open is more of a crapshoot due to the unfair set up of the courses which just seem to get ever longer and longer ( therefore eliminating 50% of the field cuz they cant hit it that far) and then another 25% of the field are eliminated by bad luck in the rough and on the too fast greens!
i think all major winners should be congratulated on their achievements and luck has and will always have a part to play in golf but i think its correct to say the open is in general the fairest of all.

I'd love to see Ernie get back on track and capture another Open.
If it weren't for some crazy-gifted dude named Tiger, Ernie would have 2 more majors to his credit. Gotta love the Big Easy's sweet swing...hope he's now fully recovered from his injury.

Re-read my post again....:hush: ?
sorry if i am missing something but it still seems to say the same thing to me?
"the U.S open eliminates inexperienced lucky players and the Open is a crapshoot?"
thats how i read your post?
but results suggest experienced good players win the Open and the U.S open is a crapshoot ( to use your terminology?)
unless i need to go back to reading class ( which is possible  )
still think a BRITISH guy will win it too :D

When you want to quote me, please keep the whole quote...Don't be selective and choose what suits you.
Perhaps you work for the press over the pond where they are notorious for mis-quoting...

well perhaps you would translate?
because you do seem ( to me ) to be saying that the british open ( actually there is no such tournament its just the open) is a bit of a crapshoot but the U.S open eliminates that possibility and produces skillful winners and less suprises.
or is that not what you said?
can you clarify because i can read it 300 more times and thats still how it reads to me.
in which case i still disagree with your view!
but we are all entitled to our opinions! :)

I picked Paul Casey to win a major this season and doubt he'd do it at Southern Hills so he's my pick.
But, if Woods uses iron off the tee, he'll be near impossible to beat.
How about another Argie, Coceres? Any more unlikely that the Duck's win?
OK, no sitting on the fence. Go Casey!

This is a CANADIAN forum catering to mostly people living in Toronto and Southern Ontario, CANADA. we call the Canadian Open THE OPEN as we choose to.
I am done arguing with you written given that you decided to see what you wanted to see.

Fine, let's quote the original quote. I interpret this the same way Xander does. IOW, British Open = flukey, US Open = not flukey. Note, I have tried to fix the grammatical errors that may lead to misinterpretation, though I don't really see how they could lead to any other conclusion. But why don't you explain what you actually meant?

the R&A have weakened Carnoustie therefore Woods erratic driving may not be a deterent in him winning. in fairness he did finish top ten in 1999 if I recall correctly. woods may not use the driver a lot. you need to keep out of bunkers off tee similar to St Andrews. I have a feeling Els or Goosen could be in with a shout, what about you? regards graham@golfblogger.co.uk

Simple isn't it?

goosen seems completely off his game right now?
carnoustie wont be too weak :D its a tough tough course just for the members. ( i realise tiger and co are a class above but trust me its the toughest open course in the U.K ) in my opinion.
Tiger is still going to need to hit his driver quite a few times-especially if our current weather of persistent rain continues :(
its a long course if it gets wet.but i think the guys would prefer it that way as they would then be able to hold the greens easily.
the scottish open is on the bbc right now ( dont know if its being shown over there at all?)
and the players are shooting low numbers as although the course is firm underneath the weather has meant that its quite receptive!
mickelson ( -9 ) ( his new swing still needs a bit of work as he is hooking a few off the tee) els ( -7 ) garcia & poulter ( -6 ) are all playing well Darren Clarke ( -4 ) seems to be playing a bit better - hope he gets some luck soon!
but all the guys seem to be playing quite nicely - if carnoustie is as receptive then we could see about 8 -10 under winning.
if the wind blows we could still see 4 over :)
LET IT BLOW :D
