All things being equal - the head, the swing, etc - what happens when you switch to a stiffer shaft?

It depends on your swing, etc. For some people it can help a great deal, for others it can make things considerably worse.

The club fitters here will likely chime in with the specific reasons when they get a chance.

Exact same swing, exact same clubhead, exact same ball, exact same conditions. This is a theoretical question only, obviously. I'm wondering, what is the effect on ball flight when changing one variable only - shaft stiffness. Same type of shaft - say a True Temper R300 vs. S300.

Without getting into the semantics of all shaft companies do not have set standards...blah, blah, blah and the pros will correct me if I am wrong...

I'm assuming in a perfect world and in this case the stiff shafts are truly stiffer than the regulars and that they are the same model, so the stiffs will ideally weigh a little more...also, that your swing is a later release...with all those factors in mind...the long and the short....The stiffer shafts will be lower launching than the regular.

If you have an early release in your swing, I believe the only factor that may change your trajectory is the loft...

To follow up on Alains response,

Your ball flight will be slightly lower, and your ball should have less spin on it as well.

If the shaft is too stiff, it can add unwanted side spin or not enough spin and have your ball float like a Tim Wakefield Knuckleball.
