i know this is off topic, but i was hoping some people could help me out with this - i was really wanting to get a panerai - although i cant justify the price $4000 - and up and up ) was also looking at getting a bell & ross but they are also expensive, i have narrowed it down to a tag automatic carrera or tag targa florio, which i can get used used for around $1000 and was wondering if anyone has these watches and can comment - the other option i have is a guy from work has a used panerai but he is looking for $5000 - i am sure i can talk him down a bit but it is still more then i wanted to pay ( i may offer him a monthly payment plan but i'm not sure if he will go for it ) any comments appreciated
thanks, chris

Nothing very special about Tags. Standard movement sourced from ETA which supplies the same movements to hundreds of watch companies. I think even Panerai is sourcing it's movements from ETA. What you pay for mostly with Tag Heuer is marketing.
If you want value, check out this list:

Some great, little known brands. Best bang for your buck is Seiko Automatics.

Man, if I had the cash I'd buy a Panerai myself. I'm going to Hong Kong this week and watches are cheaper over there.

The best watch I've owned is a Seiko Kinetic Titanium. Bought it new in the box for $229 USD off eBay from a dealer in Texas. Probably $1K tax in from an Ontario jewelery store. My buddy lives in the USA and brought it back.

Swatch IRONY...I can't justify spending MORE than $100 on a watch! ;)
...one thing I do like is a watch with Day & Date on it!!:) http://www.christ.de/produktbilder/large/82678700_g.jpg

I have about a half dozen watches; the most expensive being a Tissot, followed by a Wittinauer and a Fossil. The Tissot was purchased in Nassau, duty free, about 4 1/2 years ago. However, in my line of work, I never wear a watch because it would just get broken. My cell phone, which is pretty much surgically attached to me, is what I use to keep track of time.
Anyone want to buy a Tissot watch? :D

Chris, both Tag Heuer and Panerai use mass produced quartz (Tag) and mechanical (Panerai) movements from ETA. ETA is owned by Swatch. Swatch uses Quartz movement similar to Tag. Swatch represents excellent value in a Swiss Made watch.
You should check out the latest Swatch collection. They have gone way past the plastic fashion watches of the 80s.

Now if you could find a vintage pre-Louis Vuitton Tag or a WWII era Panerai, we're talking about a different animal.

I'll be there sept 1-16. I can hook you up with good discount, PM and I'll give you my email so you can contact me in HK if we're there at same time. Do it soon so you can get my email...in case I get banned from this place.
One thing you need to consider if the duty. if you get caught bringing it over and don't declare it, you'll lose it or get fined heavily.
Exact discount depends on the brand but I guarantee you it's cheaper than Toronto. Maybe not as cheap as in Caribbean but in HK you get selection of the best.

Panerai generally uses ETA, but does have its own in-house movement - the P.2002 for the Radiomir, and so does TAG (the Caliber 360).
The problem is that the in-house movements are reserved for the higher-end models.

What is your budget?
Have you checked out Timezone?
There is a local Panerai forum "Panereh" might give you great ideas.
I believe if you want a Pannie I would save up for it since anyother watch will not be the one you get. BE VERY DILIGENT !! there are 10X more fake watches than golf clubs
If you are not set on Panerai check out out some German watch makers ie Stowa great build quality for much less $$

$1000 isn't going to get you the Porsche/Ferrari of watches and I believe that's the OP's targeted budget. I kind of think Tag is more like a BMW 3 series... a Ferrari would be something like a Patek. Mmmm... Patek.
I second the recommendation of the Seiko Automatics though... reliable Japanese movement, sapphire crystal (on most of their high end watches) and good looks to boot!

quote - "might be a little difficult to find what you are looking for in that budget"
actually it will not be a problem at all - i can get a used but very good shape tag carrera auto for less then $1000 - this is the watch i am looking for - i want a panerai but i am well aware you cannot get one in this price range.
if you look on the watch websites ( similar concept to this website) you can find many panerai's well under 5 grand that are in excellent shape
outthere

Go to Classic Creations on Yonge St. You might get your Pan for the price you want. Ask for Ami, I have bought watches from him (Concord & Baume-Mercier) he also has Tag. Great prices.

My Dad told me never to wear a watch that's worth more than your hand. This, after he nearly had his arm ripped off by a mugger going after his Rolex in Seoul.

I have an old Breitling Navitimer. Not sure when it was made but I am assuming the 50's or 60's as it was my Grandfathers. It's not in the best of shape - any idea where I can get it fixed up in the GTA?

Be careful !! There are alot of "watch Repair shops" that will do more harm than good..I would suggest finding a Breitling forum (timezone, watch-u-seek) and get info from the enthusiasts... 50's 60's Navs are significant pieces

Thanks - I am hoping to find someone that specializes in Breitlings. The watch isn't in great shape. It's not the original band and the slide rule is missing. Not even sure if it can be repaired or not. I would just like to get it working again so I can wear it.
