Thanks for organizing Ronny! Looking forward to it!

A heads up to all re traffic .. apparently the Gardner is going to be closed Sunday morning between Carlaw and the Humber River so Lakeshore may be a little slow if that's part of your route

Ha ha ha, I live in KW and even I know metro only knows two seasons .... winter and construction.

The bad news is ... they've passed their road closing ways over to us as well. Between here and Brantford is a bunch of construction thats driving me nuts.

Have fun gang !!

Speaking of construcion, they are widening the QEW in St Catharines so it gets pretty backed up before you hit the 406, especially on weekends when people are heading out to the falls. Give yourselves an extra 20 mins just in case it's bad.

Also, investing in a yardage book is a good idea as you won't find any pictures of the holes on the score card or on the tee boxes.

Enjoy the day! Wish I could make it out.

Bring your rain gear. Welland says 90% chance of rain for the entire day. Might want to call beforehand to see if the course has been rained out.

I called the course and they said it is raining pretty good down there but the course is STILL open & will remain open. I am still going but I am not sure about my 2 guest because I don't think they have rain gear so I will have to find out still if they are willing to brave the elements.

hey peeps, just got the word from Ronny that he is on his way to the course. Like all of his "get togethers" they are rain and shine, so let's grab the rain gear, or garbage bags if you don't have, and at least we know the course will likely be to ourselves!!

Ok so now we are 3 down. My 2 guests cannot make it due to lack of rain gear which would make for wet times. Might we have to re-shuffle groupings? Head count on who's still going? I plan on leaving in about an hour or so. Dave, come pick me up...lol..j/k:D

Cougar attack in Welland?; Woman's horse attacked in broad daylight by a large cat in cope road area

Posted By MAGGIE RIOPELLE

Posted 18 hours ago

A horse was attacked in broad daylight Sunday by either a cougar or a jaguar, its owner suspects.
At about 4 p.m. Connie Spiece said her son saw one of the family's mares, who was in an outdoor enclosure, jump over the gate and flee, which was unusual behaviour for the horse. When the horse was caught and calmed down, Spiece was surprised at what she saw.
"I thought the injuries to her legs were from going through the gate, but my son saw her jump over it," said Spiece. "And she has claw marks and wounds all over her side and on her back end right by her tail. She was in shock at first but now she's drinking and eating. But I've kept her inside (the stable)."
Spiece went to investigate further at the back enclosure, close to a wooded area on the six-acre property, and discovered some more startling evidence of a large cat attack. She noticed ripped bark on a tree, she said, which is probably a result of the animal climbing it to lay in wait for its prey to get closer before it "pounced on her."
On the ground there are large animal prints with claw marks and an area with a lot of torn up dirt where Spiece said it looks like the horse rolled around before getting back to its feet.
"We can see paw prints," she said. "Because of the size, I've been told it could be a jaguar."
It has been difficult to get confirmation on what type of animal may have caused the attack.
"I didn't see it," she admitted. "But I've heard about cougars and large cats in the area."
Spiece said reports of cougar or other large cat sightings are not uncommon in the wooded area by her property on Cope Road.
To know a cat actually attacked a large animal like a horse, however, is reason for concern.
And now with an injured animal on her property, Spiece is worried the cat will come back in hopes of having a second chance at taking down the injured horse.
As for the horse, Spiece said she's worked with the gentle giants for years and with the help of her nursing training, she tended to the mare's wounds and plans on having her veterinarian check out the horse. Both the animals legs have been wrapped.
"Her legs are torn up bad," she said. "She's lucky. She's lame in the back leg from it ... but she'll live."
When the Welland and District Humane Society was contacted, Tammy Gaboury, animal care and adoptions, confirmed the society has received calls in the past concerning sightings.
This is the first time she has heard of an actual attack. Although wildlife is the Ministry of Natural Resources' domain, she said, the society does intend on stopping by the property, however, and documenting the incident.
"After it happened, I called the police and they came out to the property, they took pictures and saw the horse," said Spiece, adding that while Niagara Regional Police are not equipped for these circumstances they did take a report.
"They told me, they don't know how to handle this. I asked them if they had dogs that could track it but they weren't sure what to do ... but they were just as nervous I was to be walking around the property."
Spiece said she has also contacted the Ministry of Natural Resources to see if someone would come out to property.
"I'm worried. I know it's still in the area because I can hear the dogs barking, especially at night. I shouldn't be scared to be on my own property. A horse is a large animal. If it attacked a horse, what makes you think it won't attack another animal ... or even a person."
Spiece said she hopes the ministry will send an officer by to investigate the situation and hopefully attempt to track, capture and relocate the animal.
"This is a ministry responsibility and something needs to be done," she said. "When I called them, I was told they are short-staffed. The police department is short-staffed, too and this isn't their responsibility ... it's the ministry's."
http://www.wellandtribune.ca/media/banners/swingbill.gif (http://kestrel.ospreymedialp.com/JBSPro/files/redirect.asp?c=1156&b=1187&z=605&w=55&a=681)
The ministry, she continued, said someone would be sent out if she had pictures or proof of the big cat.
"I said, just come look at my horse, look at the claw marks. And there are prints out there.
"They are the experts in this, not the police authority. They need to get out here."
When the Ministry of Natural Resources was contacted by The Tribune, Jolanta Kowalski, communications, contacted the Vineland ministry office and the office "will be trying to have a biologist go out to take a look, hopefully this week."
She added that until the biologist has had the opportunity to "determine what potentially attacked the horse" the ministry will not be able to provide further information at this point.
