but has anyone felt good after a great putting day, when the rest of their game was in the toilet???
Yesterday as posted, I had probably my best ball striking day ever, marred buy a bulky putter on tricky greens and hellacious pin placements.
Now I know some people have posted about Cherry Downs and the greens and slopes and saying they won't play there. Me, I seldom could care less if I am hitting the ball well.
However at my level, knowing how well I hit the ball yesterday, the putting is mearly an afterthought, I can hardly wait to play again. You would not hear that if I say had 25 putts, made all the 6 footers and canned that 30 footr for a bogey, and chunked the ball all day.;)

Not really, but I wouldn't beat myself up if the putter was on fire. Usually if the flat stick is working, I'll get more confidence in the rest of my game.
In Fred Shoemaker's book, "Extraordinary Putting", he describes the concept of the game starting with putting, since we spend so much time on the putting green. This theory makes some sense because if you are confident putting, then you won't be afraid or trepidatious when you need to make an up and down for par or bogey.

Once witness to a game with 50% of the strokes were putts.
39 strokes tee-2-green [hit 16 GIR's] + 39 with the flat stick = 78
I club the putter had as many strokes as the other 13 clubs in the bag.
How you say 'ouch'

Maybe it is the bulky putter that is the problem. Try a smaller one.:D

Tricky question.
I have had some really good putting days that have quite frankly stopped me from giving the game up alltogether :)
But when your games bad and you just putt well........for me its a waste of a day.
More often i have had great ball striking days and my putting is in the toilet...........but that for me is much more satisfying because i can LIE to myself and think everything is ok and my putter will be hot next time.
The object of course is to put them both together.............i havent EVER really managed to do this to my satisfaction..............i always feel 1 or the other aspects of my game could and should have been better.
BUT i guess thats just me................i think if i shot 59 to win the masters i would think i should have shot 58 :D

I was close to that the other day.... I was around the green all day, never worse then putting for par, and had an 86-88 (really did not pay close attention to the final score) and probably 40 putts. I can only remember one hole I had 150 to reach the green for that par attempt (the result of my one terrible drive, a great recovery that rolled through the fairway, and I was caught in thickish rough, blocked by a tree), and I did hit the green and proceeded to 3 putt .... most were chips 30 yards and in.... That is phenomenal for me a 20 handicapper....

Yes...
...and the KEY to lower scores is GIR, but not if you're putting poorly as I found out last week, when I hit more than my average amount of greens, but also had more 3-putts! :(
