Since we're sharing stories of heartbreak and fun... yesterday, the wife wants to go to an "easy" course, ie one she can shoot under 80 on. So we go to humber valley, i'm licking my chops at the opportunity to go low. First hole - miss a makeable birdie putt. Second, miss a makeable birdie. Third - par. Fourth : par. Fifth (and here's where it gets interesting) : lob wedge rings off the flagstick, misses an eagle by half an inch, tap in for birdie. 6th - make a 30 footer for birdie. 7th : lip out on a 18 ft birdie putt. 8th : lip out on 22 foot birdie putt. 9th : bogey.

So a reasonable person would say "hey, 1 under for 9 holes, let's celebrate!" but of course i'm not normal, i'm a golfer. Probably the hottest streak I've ever gotten on, and all i get out of it is -1? So I think back... with a tiny bit of luck and a total of an inch more accuracy over 5 putts i reckon it could've easily gone bird-bird-par-par-eagle-bird-bird-bird-bogey, or 6 under for 9 holes...

Anyone else have "one that got away" experiences to share?

btw for those of you keeping score at home, my hot streak ended at 9 holes, and i shot 41 on the back.

en route to my one-and-only sub 80 round...EVER, started off with a bogey...ball was lying next to a fence, so I was happy to be off to an OK start....didn't really think too much about my total score (forgot to add front 9), until I landed 1 foot from the pin on the Par 3 - 17th (made the birdie), then realized, it was the First hole on the back 9 I didn't PAR! #18 was EASIER than I thought (bogeyed for 75) :)

I once hit all 6 numbers on 649, but luck would have it, I had three on one line and the other 3 on the 2nd line of numbers...for a total win of $20

so I only buy $2 now....

And did your wife break 80????

I have different expectations then many here. Last week @ Islington (playing all the way back) I could not read the greens at all.... I three putted @ least 6 holes, made one sand save and did not make another up and down from 20 yards in (no sand), using anything from a 7 iron, PW & Putter on 10 holes and still shot I think an 87 (no birdies). Slope rating 132....

Don't know whether to laugh or cry.....

87 from the tips at Islington for your first time is decent...of course that depends on your skill level. The greens are tough and difficult to read.

Laugh, don't cry...it's only golf.

Appreciate it (probably a 20 handicap), but it was my best ball striking day ever and even around the greens I hit okay, if not great shots, just baffled by the greens. Admitedly there were some ridiculous pin placements, and at my best I am just an okay putter, but as the post asked, it was close to being a special day.

Manny I have actually been grinning thinking how well I hit and looking forward to getting out again. No worries on my part....

It is a good course...number 10 has to be one of the toughest Par 3's in the city...especially if they put the pin at the back...elevated tee...trouble left, right, and back...and 200+ yards to boot!

My short game is a bucket of ice water to douse out any hopes of a hot streak lately.

yep. She had the round of her life! she's a 13 handicap, and i *think* the course rating there is 69 for ladies (?) so i think her "expected" score would have been about 81... She shot 73!!! I was blown away, and i think that might have been what pushed me to play well... she shot even par on the front (admittedly insanely easy) and held it together on the back to get the low score.

her previous all time best score on any course was 79 once... so needless to say she was bouncing off the walls for several hours afterwards.
