I know this is a few days old now, but was just wondering if any fellow TGNr's played in last weekend municipal finals at Tam O'Shanter? This was my first time making the finals and I must say I was suprisingly shocked at the event. Top notch event, run very well. We got a dinner, and a nice hat and a draw as well.
I played well, but left a bunch of shots out there. I hit all 3 par 5's on the back in 2 shots (360 yard drive on 10....2nd best of the year!) and 3 putted each green for pars! I hit driver on 12 and hit it to far and lost the ball. 3 off the tee cost me a double. I came in at 76 and that held up for a couple of groups but ultimately 69 won.
I was truly impressed with the event, the service at the course and the overall experience of the event. I plan to play again next year, with better results. Anyone else play?

How much did it cost to take part?. Prizes etc. I know the Toronto Star Amateur is the premier GTA event and because of the number of entries, you have to qualify for it. Calibre of golf is very good. Knows a few players who play in it. I am waiting for them to start a Senior Division.
Next year I am thinking of either the Golftown Tour or the Amateur series of the Great lakes tour. Mind you, the Golftown Tour is on a weekday but the course they play on are good courses and even private ones - this year they have Devil's Pulpit. Great Lakes is on the weekends but they play mostly public courses and when I caddied for GRT at carlisle, the pace of play was terrible and the course conditions especially the greens were bad.
I need to play more competitive golf as this year, having left the private club I was a member, I find my game is not as sharp and myself not as focused.

Congrats HN, that is very good playing.

This doesn't surprise me. At my course, even as a single, a high percentage of groups want to "have a game".
All of my best scores are during these matches and the more needling goes on the better I play. Seem to shoot 80 ish during these matches and high 80's when no $/pride are on the line.

Thats a good showing HOGANNUT!
You obviously understand how much more experience it takes to play decent when it matters to you or something is on the line. I know you left shots out there but we can all say that, even on our career rounds.
The more I play in tournaments, the easier it gets to play to my level.

Absolutely Grass Roots. YOu cannot simulate playing experience. This year is year #3 for me playing competitvely and I played in about a dozen events. I can honestly say that only the last 2-3 events I have really settled into competitive play. I also have been working on a pretty major swing change this year and I think the last month or so that is starting to pay off too.
The cost was $25 for the event itself. I paid $80 for the DOn Valley championship and obviously had to make the cut at DV to make it to the cities. Heck....the hat they gave us at the beginning would be $20 in a store and we got a fairly nice meal too.

THanks nearace.....on Sunday I was crunching numbers in my head. Actually I had a better front 9 than the eventualy winner (I was +1 and he was +2) but he got real hot on the back and shot 31!! So if I had simply 2 putted those 3 greens I would have been 36. Then if I hit 3 wood on 12 instead of driver you could have taken 2 more shots off the back 9, as I did par the hole with my 2nd ball, but was 3 off the tee, so that would have been 34. I made another club selection mistake on 15 and the ball was literally 3 inches in the rough, sitting down and I hit my approach shot to the back of the green and 3 putted for a bogey. So assuming I hit 4 wood instead of 3 wood on that hole and had a shot from the fairway and made par I would have been at 33 on the back and would have had a 70, which still would have been 1 to many. Anyway....that's golf.
I would like to publicly thank leftintherough for volunteering his time this year to caddy for me. Steve and I worked through the learning curve of playing with a caddy and for Steve it was learning curve for him to learn how to caddy. Steve and I ran into a lot of obstacles on the amatuer circuit we were playing regarding a caddy, and he stuck it out and supported me 100% of the way. Fully intending on kicking some major butt next year.

You should have fired the caddy after that fiasco on the 12th !!!! Some nerve of him letting you pull the big stick on that hole!

Congratulations on the good play. Keep it up for the TGN'rs out there.
I did not play in this years event but I did play back in 2000. It was hosted by Tam and they did a great job. The City gave the players a watch before tee off, a dinner and prize table after the round. The greens were double cut and rolled and were the fastest I have ever played on there.
Shot +1 (72) and tied for 3rd.
I had a hole in one on the 6th and was cut off by another player 2 groups behind me. Kinda got a little pi$$ed about that. There was a 3rd hole in one on the 14th by one of the junior golfers.
A great day!
I have always wanted to get back to it but my schedule always seems to conflict with Tam's club championship. Someday I will be back.... I hope.

Thanks bud; It was a joy watching you spank the ball over 360 yards from the tee on occausion.
I highly recommend for anyone who doesn't have the game currently to compete themselves to take a caddying gig. My greens reading and on-course strategy has tremendously improved this year.
Watch out folks, Hogannut can really hammer the ball and we have big plans for next year!

Yep - I did, now going on 3 years, am actually club champion at one of the sister courses. This year things were a bit different - with the $25 registration fee plus the smaller prize table. But overall it was a fun day, always is. Didn't play my best however, left quite a number of shots out there, had a few 4 putts (yeah you heard right) which really slaughtered me! Can't wait for next year.
