This year Ive been playing a lot of golf and Im starting to feel guilty about all the money I've been spending on the game. I try to look for promos and use coupons when I can, but damn, I spend more a month on my golf then my car payments.

I guess I want to hear that other people are in the same boat so I dont feel as bad :D

Well I don't feel guilty until my wife starts flapping about it. In which I proceed to turn the volume up on the tv.

I used to be heavy on drinking with friends and getting together on weekends. If we went all out, we'd usually end up spending a good bill each.

Golf on the other hand allows me to be active, gets me up early in the mornings on weekends (unbelievable how I can sleep only 3 hours and still get up in time for tee time). There are no hang overs, and that morning drive North or wherever feels great.

Sure if you saved up for the summer instead of golfing you'd have an extra 3K~4K left... Although that's not true because for me, I KNOW I would've spent that money on something else.

Yes. I get up no problems by 6:00 am for a 7/7:30 tee time where ever, and through the week I'm barely dragging my self out of bed on time to get to the office by 9 am.

I do not drink much (once per 1-2 months) I have never smoked, so I guess my vice is golf which is not too bad since it is alot more healthy than the other options. One bottle of conditioner for my wife is like 2 rounds at Innerkip. One salon visit is like 4-5 rounds of golf. Since I have found this site I was able to update my equipment (read the birth of a club ho) for far less than I thought possible.

I gave up smoking 18 months ago...........took up golf a few weeks later.

Cigarettes in England are amazingly expensive about $7-8 per pack of 20.

I was smoking 1 pack a day ( minimum ) or approx $80 per week would be more accurate.

So no i dont feel guilty at all because i am improving my own health and not spending anymore than i used to when i smoked.

I did feel a little guilty inflicting my smoke on my family who were non smokers............so i actually feel great about playing golf.

Golf as we all know can be expensive but it doesnt HAVE to be expensive...........so you can cut your cloth to suit your needs :)

I'm not a smoker so I'm not sure, but I'm thinking thats about what they cost here.

Guys...never, ever, feel guilty about playing golf.

It's an obsession and we are all hooked.

Heard this joke a few weeks ago........

Guy comes home after golf on a Saturday........sits down in front of the chair and turns on the TV to the current golf tournament. He tells his wife to get him a beer "before it starts."

She brings him one. He drains it and asks for another "before it starts."

She brings him another beer, he drains it and asks for another "before it starts."

The wife hands him the beer and says "You played golf all morning and now you are gonna watch it all afternoon!"

He says, "IT'S STARTED."

Me I try to save up some cash during the year (LOL) so golf doesn't hurt as much..............

I am in this boat too. My feelings are more of frustration than anything else. Furstration of watching your bank account getting smaller and smaller. This year I have spent around $1500 on equipment, $250 on video lessons as well as joining a mini-tour and playing every weekend. Oh ya.....I forgot.....$500 on a range membership too and $250 on a new 3 wheeler, 3 wheelers are simply the best...for anyone thinking of getting one, go for it. I was die hard carry guy and it took me exactly 1 round to change my mind.

My next hobby is going to be collecting pop bottles for refunds!!

Don't feel guilty but did feel, in 2006, that I spent way too much on green fees (30 rounds plus) plus my membership plus house minimums plus some new equipment.

This year I cut my green fees way back (6 rounds) and mostly played on a trial membership with no house minimum.

Netted about $2,000 on used equipment I sold and spent $300 for a backup driver (TM Burner).

Spent $250 on video lessons but that was a mistake....should have found the time to go bi-weekly or tri-weekly.

The key is not to have car payments!:D Why feel guilty about a healthy pastime that gives you so much enjoyment? In any case, the season will end soon enough and then you'll be like the rest of us trying to get that last bit of local golf before cabin fever sets in - bet you won't be thinking about the money then!:)

Its only money.:D

I spend less than $3,000 per year on golf (60 rounds, range membership, etc) and I make that much refereeing in the winter - so it all balances out. I'm cheap and I avoid paying full retail price like the plague.

I am actually taking another job this off-season to get some $ for next year. Although reffing hockey isn't really "work" for me as I was a hard core stripes for a decade in the late 80's to 90's. THen I had young kids in hockey so wanted to be around for that. I tied up their skates and did a bit of coaching. Now the older one is 14 and is actually starting reffing himself this year. The other one is still only 10 but he plays once a week Saturday mornings. You can actually do pretty good reffing. If I work 3 times a week (usually about 4 games per shift) I can bring in about $180 CASH! It's good exercise, you are giving something back to the game and except for the occasional episode it is actually fun. You do get yelled at, but most of the people in the stands who yell don't know the rules, and are usually wrong, and if it comes from the bench the coach gets 1 warning and then he is tossed from the game and can go watch with in the stands with all the other ref's!

My only saving grace is that I know I will not be able to play year round.

I can tell myself 'It is OK, in a few months, I won't be spending money on golf'...

That's exactly what I'm doing this winter, just to save up for a trip south in the spring (I'm taking my clubs, she doesn't know yet!)

I had mine, but I'm almost 60 now and some of that crap doesn't begin to make sense any more.

As Ronnie Hawkins said, "90% of the money I made, I spent on booze and broads. The rest I just wasted."

Nope. I'm the sole breadwinner at my house, don't smoke, drink (very often) and only do one other activity a year that costs me a total of about $50. So, I feel quite justified in my expense.
