I recently bought a brand new set of Callaway irons from an authorized dealer in store. When I went to register online I couldnt find the serial number on the 8 iron, and called the store who said it's the code on the sticker on the shaft. I thought that's kind of strange but thought nothing more when the registration didn't return an error message.
Just saw the same set at another retailer and yes, the serial number is where it SHOULD be, engraved on the hosel of the 8 iron.
Is it possible that some irons just don't have serial numbers?! May be the store put individual irons together and sold as a set? How do I varify if my set is genuine?
I'd hate to believe that this dealer (they seem reputable and helpful and definitely AUTHORIZED) would sell bogus clubs...

If there isn't an engraved or stamped serial number on that particular Callaway set, you may have been had.
How certain are you that they are Callaway authorized? You said you were able to register the number on the sticker? Hanging a Callaway sign doesn't mean they are. I'd check the Callaway website to make sure, and take them back if something's not right.

that's the thing - it's listed on the Callaway website as an Authorized Dealer. in fact the retailer advertises on this site, and the purchase price was pretty much at market price so i had full confidence purchasing this set.
would there be ANY reason why there wouldn't be a serial number on a genuine set?

From Callaway.com:
If you are purchasing a set of irons, does the 8-iron have a serial number on it? If the answer is "no," there is a very high probability that these clubs could be counterfeit.
You could contact Callaway here to assist you:

not sure on this.........but could it be the case that the 8 iron has been re shafted?
Maybe its not the original hosel or the original 8 iron.in which case they should have been sold as a used/demo set???
It would be unlikely that they would sell you a set of fakes if they are authorized dealers as they would certainly be prosecuted and have their license revoked for this!

well well, apparently genuine Callaway clubs CAN have no serial number!
i contacted Callaway and this is their reply:
"Most of the Callaway Golf equipment in Canada
does in fact come with a serial number attached to it, but there are
some special occasions in which some clubs will not have a serial
number. The reason for this is that in Canada we do have our own
production house where we build custom golf clubs, but we do not have
the machine that they use in the US to put the serial numbers on!
In your case I am lead to believe that the irons that you purchased were
probably custom built here in Canada. Fortunately because of this type
of situation we do allow golf clubs without serial numbers to be
registered on www.mycallaway.ca (http://www.mycallaway.ca/). All you have to do is go through the
same process you would as if you had a serial number and simply skip the
information where you are asked for the serial number!
Thank you for bringing your concerns to us. Hopefully the information
that I have provided can assure you that when you are purchasing from an
authorized retailers that you are indeed getting authentic Callaway Golf
equipment!"
is it just me, or is this a strange system?! fakers out there can easily dub bogus clubs as "Canadian-built", Callaway Canada should really buy themselves a laser engraver....
EDIT: what exactly does "custom built in Canada" mean anyway, different specs? i didn't know i purchased "custom".

I bought a TM driver on Ebay from a good seller, it came with a sticker with the number that was quite smudged. I went over to GT and the first one I looked at had a perfect sticker....the next couple were very smudged and phoney looking. My numbers checked out fine.
The OEM's don't seem as concerned about fakes as they let on.

Anyone can go to Callaway to get fitted. Then, you head to an authorized Callaway dealer and they will order the clubs for you with the spec sheet received at the fitting.

does this mean that my clubs are not standard specs but made to another individual's specifications?

I recently purchased a set of X-forged from Golftown and had them cut down slightly. When I went to register them, the 8 iron didn't have a serial number on them. But seeing as they came from Gofltown I doubt they would be fakes...

thanks for that, dks! i feel much more confident this isn't a fake set knowing someone else has the same.

shafts are the same old graphite ones that come in standard sets.
man, would have been prudent for the retailer to advise customers if they are selling "custom" sets!

i'm prolly the only person on this forum that's unaware of golf club production, but here's Callaway's explaination (i still think they should invest in a laser engraver though!) -
"Callaway Golf Canada has gone about implementing a production facility here in Canada so that we could build clubs to our customer’s exact specifications as quickly as possible these clubs that are made exactly to customer’s specifications are called “Custom Club”. At times if we are low on inventory of a certain item and we have the raw materials to build the item instead of waiting for it we will set-up a standard order but put it through our custom production department in order to get it to our customers as soon as possible. So in the end there is no difference between US and Canada built clubs except that there will not be a serial number on a Canadian built club. The materials as well as the way that they are built are exactly the same in Canada and the US."

Did you buy them new? If not, I'd say most likely. Mine were bought used, and custom fit to someone else until I sent them into Cally with my specs.

My Callaway Big Bertha '04 irons didn't have a serial number on any of the heads and I bought them new from Golf Town. I emailed Callaway about it and they said that as long as I had the receipt, all was good.
When I sold them this past spring, I provided a copy of the receipt with the irons for the purchaser as proof. So just hang to the receipt to prove that they are not fakes.
