I have a less than 1 year old Scotty Cameron SS Newport 1.5 that is starting to rust. There is no way this is normal. I take it out of the headcover after every round and dry it off and store it without the cover on. I can't believe it is rusting.
Any advice as to what I should be doing? I don't wnat to pay to have it refinished but I've never had a putter rust before.

take it back to where you bought it when your done your season, have them send it back to scotty for a warrenty assessment..they(titliest) "should" refinish it, which takes 8 weeks...

I had a Studio Style (stainless head also) that got a few specs of rust on it in the cavity despite me taking very good care of it. Probably was fertilizer, but who knows. Anyway, I took some 0000 steel wool to it (won't scratch the finish). Got rid of the rust, and it never came back. If the rusting isn't too extensive, give it a try.

Well I finally got around to calling Titleist.
They were AMAZING. I always knew they were top knotch but wow. The lady on the phone was extremely pleasant and sympathetic. She told me just to go to a local authorized Titleist dealer (doesn't have to be the one I bought it from & I don't even have to have a receipt). So basically, my putter is getting fixed for free with a smile from Titleist.
My hat's off to them.

That's pretty good service...was the putter a studio stainless or studio style?

I've seen a Pro Platinum show some rust in spots. Aren't they stainless steel all around? I was just curious to see stainless steel rust.

My putter is a Studio Style Newport 1.5.

It's hardly disfiguring rust. You can BARELY see it under normal indoor light. On the course you can see discolouring however.

The Studio Stainless is a stainless steel putter. It should never rust at all. What Titleist will do is most likely send you a new putter or restore it. With the resto though, it will end up rusting again as there is something wrong with the stainless steel to begin with.
Pro Platinums can rust over time as they are just a coating on the putter, and the oil can and 3x black and what not will for sure.
Hope this helps.

The 304 Stainless they use for putters isn't the most rust resistant stuff out there. Scotty uses it because it is soft, easy to machine, easy to procure and relatively cheap. It is subject to rust in certain envirnomental conditions. If I rememember my skooling properly, it is subject to rust in sulphate and nitrate rich enviroments. What do you think they use in pesticides and fertalizers? Good news is that unless heat is involved it's just a surface condition which can be brushed out with some 1200 wet dry sandpaper or a polishing wheel on your dremel tool.
Always remember kiddies to wash and dry your putters after every round and don't lick your (golf) balls.
