View Full Version : To cover forged irons or not to cover...

Sep 19, 2007, 11:58 AM
...that is the question. Right now I am using iron covers for my forged heads cause I'm worried about them getting all dinged up. Now obviously there is nothing you cand do about the face as its hitting the ball but the backs of my irons still look brand new. Am I worrying too much or would the backs get pretty messed up by clanging around. I'm asking because between cleaning my irons after almost every shot and having to take the covers on and off its starting to be a real pain in the butt. Besides the irons look so much better uncovered then with this iron covers on them.

I have covers for mine mainly for transport to and from course, once I get to the course I remove them and leave in the trunk and put back after the round.

Now that would work for me. Do you find that the bag chatter on your irons gets bad just from having them uncovered for the round?

Absolutely, definitely not.

It would be like buying a Corvette or a Porsche, then using plastic seat covers (that you borrowed from your grandmother's house that has all of the doileys on the tables as well).

HAHAHAHA nice.

I don't use them for my mizuno's and mine show a tiny bit of chatter (I only ever walk) but in the grand scheme of things, whatever. It builds character and they are my clubs. By the time I want to sell them I will get just as much for them beaten up as I would perfect.

They are golf clubs at the end of the day. I use them to swing hard at a white orb in an attempt to hurtle it down a patch of grass.

THose first few dings are tough to accept. I am in that boat right now after picking up the new weapons this past weekend. They are already a bit marked from being put on the loft/lie machine to be bent to my specs. What are you gonna do? I tried covers when I got my Hogans new in 2000 and ended spending more time taking them on and off. For me anyway, after the first few dings you come to accept it. After the first few you realize there is nothing you can do and simply use the clubs for what they were made for and any little ding just adds "character" to them. What pi$$es me off with forged heads is if you hit a rock under the turf and makes a permanent scrape on the sole!

The backs of my KZG'z are mint. Not a mark there. And I have them out every day, either on the range or the course. I will have a hard time letting them get dinged up there. My Sand wedge has a chip in the chrome on the sole from a small pebble hidden in the dirt. That pi$$ed me off.
I thought of buying a Burton quiet organizer bag as the club heads sit right down in a slot. But they are expensive and the odd time I take a power cart the irons will be hard to lift out of the bag. Besides I don't really like the looks Burton bags that much. I'll just have to grit my teeth I guess and let them clang.

I've never done it before and for some strange reason I think my boss wouldn't like to see me on the chat room with a digital camera hooked up to my p/c trying to load the pics on to the room. Bosses are funny about things like that!!

I think a better analogy would be...After you buy a Porsche or Corvette, would you put a car cover on it everytime you get out of the car???

I tried headcovers on my forged irons, but quickly gave up, too much work. But, I'm not one of those guys that is against it...It's just not for me.

it's just too odd to put covers on irons, IMO...

Sometimes people lose sight of the fact that golf clubs are specifically built to hit things. If you don't want your clubs getting dinged, don't play with them.

Agree.....now I have always played a forged head, but after I went from 1989 Hogan Edges which were a mid size cavity back (for 1989 anyway) my next set was a set of Apex blades, and yes the smaller head forces you to concentrate more. My Snake Eyes are smidge smaller than my Apex Plus' and are more of a blade setup although they are cavity back.

BTW....did you look at SE 600XC's before going with the KZG's heads? Both heads are good quality so I'm not passing judgement on your choice, I was just curious.

I hit a couple of demo snake eyes. Not sure what they were. Whatever snake eyes has available in left hand. To be honest I didn't really have the experience to tell the difference at the time. It all came down to really liking the look of the KZG better.

Looks are just as important as feel. I'm glad you like them. They are quality heads and you made the right choice going with a component head, and (I'm assuming) getting them fitted to you. Maybe one day we can compare our heads (ooooh....that's kind of gross!!  )

To and from the course and during play.........i only take them off when i bring my clubs safely home :)

Doesnt make sense to me to spend all that money on your irons and then let them get damaged when its so easy to avoid it?

Sure they are going to get all marked up just through play ( eventually ) but bag chatter is avoidable.

Would it not make sense to buy a bag that minimizes Bag chatter? I would really like to ditch the head covers. I'm going to go to GT tonight to pick up a new bag and my 3 choices are. #1 The Bennington Quiet organizer. The irons go all the way down a divider and the head sits in a groove to prevent movement. I hate the looks of this bag.
#2 The Bag boy NXO revolver. I love the way the irons woud snap in to a groove preventing movement. I love the way the top revolves the club for easy access. I hate the way the putter clips to the outside of the bag. Nothing much to hold it and lots of complaints of the putter easily falling out of the clip. Its pretty much the only thing I don't like about this bag.
#3 Sunmountain C-13. I love everything about this bag. I love the way it looks. The only drawback is that I would still have to use the headcovers to minimize bag chatter.
Its down to sunmountain or bagboy. While the bagboy is on my pull cart I won't worry about the putter coming off and getting lost as it will always be infront of me. The only problem is when I'm riding. I'm thinking if there is room to put the putter in the bag with the rest of the clubs when I'm riding then problem solved. Whatever way I go I don't think I'm prepared to allow bag chatter to the backs of my irons to happen. Its just a small consideration as I realize that I hit balls off of turf with them. But if I can prevent further unnecessary dinging then why wouldn't I?

I carry, therefore the chatter can be controlled much better than in a cart.
I have a mid size bath towel to wipe my clubs which I drape over the heads and rest my hand on to dampen any chatter as I'm walking.

None, bag chatter is when a group of bags get together and start chatting it up on the first tee.

Yes and thats my conundrum. I love how they look and would love to have them displayed for all to see. But how long will they look good smashing around in the bag? Or are these things more durable than I think?
I think I may just go by the rule of some of the previous posters and use them for transporting and leave them uncovered for the round.

The people who are laughing at the idea of using iron covers?

Is that simply a vanity thing because you want any1 passing to be able to see your nice expensive clubs?

Nobody has said i dont think they work ( because we know they do ).......i use them to protect my clubs.
I dont care if the guy passing me cant see what clubs i am using.......my playing partners know what i am playing.

My banters was more towards Guitarman because we have had some back and forth and we are pretty kosher. He is a big boy who appreciate some good humor and he gives them right back to me.

When do I insult you? If you feel that way, I want to know that it was not intentional. If you are good with that, we can move on. As for your comeback/insults, I am not going to retort because I think you reacted to some internet posting that inevitably being perceived as a personal insult. If you don't think this apology is adequate, feel free to keep PMing me and call me names that get blanked out because I will not engage in war of words.

I have never used covers. I throw my bag into my car. I slam my clubs into my bag after bad shots on occasion. I have all kinds of bag chatter marks. My clubs look as good as the first day I got them. To me anyway. To each his own.

Hey if Tiger doesn't use covers, then niether will I. ;)

Here we go again with the Tiger comparisons.   Yes, if I had his money the last thing on my mind would be marks on my irons.

Ya mon! Will be posted on Sunday, unless we talk each other into going out for a fast 9.

ya hurry up man. I want to see these clubs.:)

There isnt really any need to attempt to insult somebody for making a golf comment.you have done that several times to me!!! BH was making a general comment that was not directed at any specific individual...

...unlike the line that was deleted from your post.

I always use iron covers ( neoprene style) .....I have 4 sets of forgings that all look great.

I like to keep my clubs as pristine as possible.....it is no big deal to put them on and off...but sometimes a pain if you drop one behind.

I clean my clubs after every useage and also apply several coats of liquid glass clear coat protectant on all my metal wood heads and graphite shafts to protect them

I have headcovers on all my woods as well...using iron covers is no different that wood head covers, both there to protect the club from nicks and dings that dont occur during the course of play

to each his own though...that is just the way I like to do things.

cast clubs do not need iron covers as they are much more resistant to suffering dings.......I've seen 20 year old pings that look way better than 6 month old poorly looked after forgings

I attempted to delete that line myself..but the moderators here are very quick :)

i apologised to BH for the private message i sent him but i wont apologise for pointing out that he has done this several times SPECIFICALLY aimed at me.

if his comments are not aimed at a SPECIFIC individual then he shouldnt use the quote of that individual.

for example i am using your quote because i want to address my comments to you and that is why i also sent a PM to you.

If that doesnt make sense then i dont see why there is a quote button on the site.........surely it is defunct if when it is used it is not meant to be specific to the person you are quoting?

Covering irons strikes me as over-protective for metal objects that are to be used for hitting dirt, but that's just me. Anyway, you don't really own 'em till you ding 'em. ;)

But what I like, and this is just me, is for the dings to be on the face of the club, where you hit the ball and the backs of the club head to shine like new. With my neoprene covers this is what I have.

If looks don't matter, then why do some people care so much about skymarks on woods and drivers?? As a recovering club 'ho, I know that looks are important to a lot of people.

Headcovers have zero impact on the performance of a club, and yet some people would never, ever forget to put one on a driver or putter. But for some reason headcovers on irons have a bad rap.

Yeah they can be a pain sometimes - but if looks matter to you and/or you think you might be trading in those forged irons down the road, then they might be worth the inconvenience.

Uhhh.....condoms are used in action (presumably) phase; iron covers are used when idle (presumably). Don't tell me you wear the latex in your idle mode....

Adds new meaning to the "I must have left the head cover on that one" excuse.

No plans to trade or sell just like the way they shine and keep looking new.:)

I think that is your answer!!

Also you can use the iron covers as part of your pre-shot routine. that 1-2 seconds of extra thought may be helpful.

It actually doesn't take that much time and I think on course I may use Harry's idea of having a cover on every other one to avoid them clanging. That will save some time as well.

If you bought a nice new set of irons, whether they are MB or CB, I would cover them. I am using Castle Bay rubber head covers on my TM r7's. I also am a Cart-Man, so that makes a difference. The clubs bang together a lot more, bouncing along in a power cart.

If you are walking and the heads don't bang together too much, then maybe it's not so important to protect them (plus there might be a weight issue).

My $0.02.

The bag boy is just a good putter well away from what I want.

Hey Guitarman,

Just a thought... doesn't the Bag Boy have a 14-top revolver organizer? With 14 wells, why would you need to use the outside putter clip? Unless you carry 15 clubs, but that's technically against the rules anyway. I was thinking of picking up this bag as well, or Bag Boy's other model - the Clip-Lok. Doesn't have a revolving top, but the colour choices are better. Both bags have outside putter clips, but they also have 14 individual wells.

I thought of that but the 14 holes on top are fairly tight and I have a 2 ball Odyssey putter. My ogio putter well is also tight but not as tight as the bag boy and it still cause me problems. I wouldn't have minded storing my putter in one of the 14 pockets for transport but in a round it would be a pain.
