Now we're getting openly screwed on the price of cars, books and everything else that's way cheaper in the states. No more excuses about the difference in the dollar being responsible for the disparity.
Same as ATM fees. The same banks don't charge user fees in the states but we get shafted with them for every transaction. The finance minister was supposed to 'look into it' but we never heard another peep about it. My guess is he was told to shut up and take it, just like the rest of us.

I am scheduled to visit company's Seattle and Chicago operation centers next month. Probably going to do some research to find out what products have the largest gap b/w Canada and US price-wise. Could be expensive watches or shoes.

As far as golf gears, even at parity, I still think I could find better deals here at the BST.

Exactly....I bought a Birthday Card the other day, I'm gonna have to DEMAND that I can pay the US $ price listed on the back, not the Canadian price which is substantially MORE?!!!!

Here's a quote from an article http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/070919/business/consumers_loonie_2 on the canadian dollar,

One website out of Victoria, www.UCanImport.com (http://www.UCanImport.com), urges Canadians to "take advantage of the strong Canadian dollar by importing your next car from the United States."

The website says Canadians can save between $5,000 and $15,000 on their car by shopping across the border, and offers tips and advice, as well as key contacts.

Our authorities are just so passive. I can understand in inventory items they can not lower the prices, but when it comes to new releases, it is just bloody rip off.

On the other hand, I am concerned with our manufacturing sector. Our domestic market is not big enough to support them. Any gain in cheaper goods in the short term could be overshadowed by job lost in the long haul.

I imported my S2000 back in 2005. It does kill me thinking of how much money I could have saved by purchasing it today, but then again, I still saved about $10,000 at the time.

If anyone here is interested in importing a car, I can help answer your questions as I imported mine on my own. Also, check out www.riv.ca (http://www.riv.ca) for pretty much all the info you'd need.

Looks like the borders will be busy this weekend.

someone could make money acting as an agent for people and doing the legwork needed to import a vehicle.

I wonder if it would be cheaper to import a GM car/truck that is actually made in Oshawa instead of buying it from a dealer here.

There are companies that do infact import cars for people. But still, as long as you use the riv.ca site, it's pretty easy to do yourself.

Also, at work here we are looking at picking up a new pickup truck. We're looking at 2007 Ford F-250 SuperDuty's. So we compared the prices of them on the Canadian site vs. the US site. The price difference between the two will make the US truck cheaper by about $6000 after importing.

We then compared the Dodge Sprinter trucks and buying in the US would save about $11,000 after importing.

Yeah and to top it all off, I heard on the news today that it takes quite a while for the prices to adjust to the change of the fx rate. They say two years.

and there's more to come. our loonie should settle in above the US $ for the near term. 1.05C$ is quite foreseeable down the road. Many, many, nations ( China, Russia, etc..) are dumping US$'s. Once the property situation fully bottoms out in the US (approx 2009ish) along with our dollar trading at these levels, purchasing real estate in the states will become far more attractive. With price depreceation and currency appreciation factored in, you could buy that Miami pad for 35-50% less than in 2005!!

Can't remember the exact year either. Hell, I'm lucky to find my way home from the golf club! I believe it was in the early to mid 70s

Just checked it out and I wasn't far off. Our dollar last traded at par in 1976. In fact, it traded at a premium for much of that year as well as most of 1974 and early 1975. The low was around .65 in 2002.

The Canadian tourism industry is getting "killed" because of the strength of the Loonie.
U.S tourists are not crossing the border and visitors from Britian are choosing the states because their dollar goes further.
Watch for great deals at places like Tremblant, Whistler etc

Did anyone here about the savings for Canadian pro teams. They were saying on the radio today that for every cent the loonie rises in comparison to the US, the Blue Jays save $600,000!

Right now it's win-win.

Credit is very hard to get in the US right now meaning used car prices are quite depressed.

In the near future, we will see a flood of US cars debasing the used car market here....right now a Cadillac XLR can be found for under $40K US but are running, in many cases, at around $55,000 Cdn. That spread will have dealers importing....

The loonie can remain strong as long as it is not as strong as others against the US dollar. Given that America is our biggest trading partner, if they go elsewhere due to cheaper F/X, our economy will suffer dearly. We don't want to end up having cheap golf gears but no one has the income to buy them.
