the real wakeup call was today golfing I teamed up with a two-some and the one person had no voice box,he had throat cancer and had lost his ability to speak,he wrote notes to communicate he said this was directly a result from smoking, the light came on and I am trying to give it up before this may happen to me.:help:

I quit over 5 years ago...it was really difficult for the first week or so, but it was well worth it. Having a spouse/partner/better-half that does not smoke helps a lot!
The shrinks say try a different routine...some people may associate their morning smoke with a coffee, so for a while have a green tea or go for a walk; a friend who quit put a fiver in his change jar for each day, and after a year was able to buy new sticks and gear.
Use anything to motivate. For everything in life I say, don't quit! But in this case: Quit!
Good luck.

Fantastic decision. When I quit I replaced the cigarette with a glass of water when the cravings came but expect to have times that the cravings will be strong and don't give in.

Believe me there will come a day that you won't have a craving and you will wonder why you ever smoked.

I do wish you all the best. It's one of the most difficult "habits" to break. Keep a positive attitude, and try to substitute something healthy (someone suggested a glass of water) when those cravings occur. Good luck.

It's all in your head. If you don't want to smoke you won't. I know you can do it!

Drink lots of water....it flushes out your system. I chewed about 10 packs of gum per day when I quit. I think it is 36 hours when the nicotine is out of your system, so if you can get by the first week, all the cravings will be mental and not physical. Good luck, it will be the best thing you will ever do. It took me 3 times to finally quit and haven't had a smoke in 12 years. Don't fall off the wagon!!!!

I gave up in march 2006 and still havent smoked since :)

At roughly the same time i started playing golf and am now addicted to that

I went to one of those quit smoking help groups ( dunno if you have them there ) and used patches for nightime for the 1st week.( on their advice ).

I then went cold turkey the following week.

I wish you the very best of luck...just think of the money you can save and spend on golf if you stick with it :D

Good luck. I quit smoking 3 years ago after a 25 year pack-a-day habit. It's easy if you want it bad enough. Just keep reminding yourself of all the great things you have to live for, it worked for me. Also, your lungs are one of the few organs that will try to regenerate themselves. They may never be perfect again, but quitting now will definitely add years to your life.
One bit of advice-- don't reward yourself with food for making it a day without a smoke, unless it's something healthy like a stick of celery or a carrot. Hard candy and stuff like that can lead to another habit that's also hard to break, but not quite as deadly as smoking. You don't want to replace one addiction with another, you want to become not addicted to anything.
Good luck man, you can do this.

I think the glass of water thing someone else mentioned is a good idea and in alignment with Flog's comment on not replacing one addiction with another. Drinking a glass of water should both help to keep your mind off of it and not be terribly habit forming in any significant way.

I quit about 4 years ago and highly recommend it.

Not easily done but worth it in end. :)
